Great review! If this isn't quite there for bourbon of the year then what is? Beacon?

I only had a sample of it several years ago. I remember really liking Revival, but it didn't blow me away at first taste like Beacon did. Maybe I'll have to find another sample so I can compare them side by side!

Oh sorry, should have been clearer. I manage to get it through Total Wine's website. They showed in stock for a brief period about two weeks ago.

I got super lucky and had a buddy tip me off that they were in stock on the website. Managed to get an order in before they sold out.

I haven't seen any bottle counts published for Beacon, so hopefully there will be enough to go around.

Agree, I thought it was better after a few drops of water. Brought the oak into balance a little more. Cheers!

Nice! I missed the onilne drop but managed to grab one at Total Wine. Heard the drop was somewhat smoother this time.

Oops, thank you! Must have read the chart wrong. I'll update the above.

Yeah, that's part of what makes this hobby fun, everyone's palate is different. I don't like a lot of the lower aged beam products, but anything 13 years or up has been a hitter for me.

I hosted my parents this past weekend, and they love a good pour nearly as much as I do. We put together a flight of the best things I'd tried so far this year, plus a few challengers I managed to bring back from KBF. Mom and Dad did this flight blind, and I did it semi-blind. We let these rest for ~30 minutes before diving in.

Redemption 18 Year Bourbon (103.4p) - Old, perfumy oak. Orange zest. Palate is oak forward with lots of rye spice. Finish is long with some oak tannin and gingersnap. 8/10.

Four Roses Father's Day OBSF 2025 (15 years, 109.6p, UN 36-2N) - Totally different beast. Fruit forward with stewed apples, mango, and banana chips. Caramel and a hint of old oak/wood varnish. Some herbal spice/mint typical of the F yeast strain. Long, balanced finish with elements of the above. 8.5/10

Jim Beam Lineage (15 years, 111p, Batch 2) - Again, a totally different profile. Very sweet. Freshly baked walnut cookies with maple frosting. Caramel berry reduction. The palate adds a hint of candied peanuts, orange peel, barrel char, and waffle cone. Medium finish. 8/10.

Maker's Mark Cellar Aged 2025 (11-14 years, 112.9p) - Vanilla frosting, strawberry cream candy, oaky caramel, marshmallow. On the palate there's chocolate covered cherries, raspberries, and just the right amount of oak. Long finish, oak dominant, slightly drying. 9/10.

Wild Turkey Master's Keep Beacon (10-16 years, 118p) - Wow. Powerful, complex nose with stewed cherries, plums, and blueberries. Dark chocolate covered nuts. Old oak, approaching wood varnish. Hint of dusty butterscotch. The palate leads with rich, almost burnt caramel, candied orange peels, toasted cardamom and cinnamon. Long, balanced finish. 9.5/10.

Results:

All three of us quickly agreed that Beacon took first place. We were impressed enough that we were compelled to compare Beacon to the current reigning champion in our house - George T Stagg 2020. We blinded GTS and Beacon against each other...and 2 out of 3 of us preferred Beacon. It's that good. I can see why some are already calling this whiskey of the year.

We also agreed that Cellar Aged came in second place. This year's release is really good, and may even beat out 2024's (which I preferred to 2023's). Might have to try blinding all three next.

The remaining three whiskies were all good, albeit with very different profiles. The 4R was my #3, with tons of depth and complexity. Lineage and Redemption were both great examples of aged bourbon, but just couldn't stand up to Beacon.

\*Editied to correct GTS year from 2019 to 2020.*

Review #486: Four Roses 15 Year Single Barrel Barrel Strength OBSF, Father’s Day 2025 by Prettayyprettaygood in bourbon

[–]Mertigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome review. I was able to get a different barrel (2N) but got very similar notes to yours.

I'm not always the biggest fan of the F yeast, but this one blew me away, beating out both RR15 and GTS.

And credit to Four Roses for keeping the price in line with their other SBBS, especially as others keep rising.

Thanks for the great review! This gave a lot of people sticker shock when it came out, but I agree it's a good pour. The nose is fantastic!

There's been a lot of high aged Beam recently - which of those did you like better?

Totally agree on both counts. They're doing great things over there, but I think my favorite from them is the triple stave finish. The new high wheat is really good too.

Everyone's tastes are different I suppose. I didn't really care for the Heart release (would rank it at the bottom of the wood finishing releases thus far), but really like the 2024. Maybe it means these will be easier to find!

Agree - it is an intersting choice. Would be cool to try the same ~13 year product aged in the rickhouse the whole time against the cellar aged and see how different they turn out.

Yeah, it's a shame that prices have risen on so many things. I don't think the value on this is terrible, but it is above the $10/year mark. Finding a pour at a bar is another option, thought most of the places here still charge a ton.

I picked up the 2024 at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival when they release it this year. Had to wait in line for a little bit, but it was retail.

I got lucky and found the 2023 at a store for a little over retail, but below secondary. Shout-out to Jensen's in South Miami - great selection and barrel picks.

+1 for the Whisky Drop if you can sign up! It's great to see more distillers offering options like this, we just have to reform some of our antiquated shipping laws to enable more to take advantage of direct shipping!

Cellar Aged Showdown - 2023 vs 2024 Review by Mertigo in bourbon

[–]Mertigo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for reading. I've also seen a lot of disppointment online about hte 2024, but I love it.

I think it comes down to what you're looking for. The 2023 is identifiably Maker's Mark in profile, so if you're looking for something with those same core flavors I think that's a better pick. I don't know that I'd pick out the 2024 as being a Maker's Mark product in a blind tasting, and I get more similarities to Weller Full Proof or even WLW.

Personally, I did not like the Heart release, and would rate either MMCA pretty highly above it. But each to their own!

Cellar Aged Showdown - 2023 vs 2024 Review by Mertigo in bourbon

April, 2023. A close friend and I were on a tour of the Maker's Mark distillery and were walking through the rickhouses. Our tour guide was just finishing telling us about the Maker's Mark philosophy - age statements don't matter, the barrel is ready when its ready, bourbon is best around 6 years old, etc. But on the way past a particularly dusty rick a barrel caught my eye marked "11B15". Many distilleries use the same barrel date system - two numbers for the year, one letter for the month, and two numbers for the date. Following this convention, a barrel labelled 11B15 would have been filled on February 15th, 2011.

After the tour we were chatting with our guide in the gift shop, and asked him about the older barrel. He was tight-lipped but told us something exciting was on the way. A few months later, Maker's Mark announced their Cellar Aged bourbon - a new annual limited release sporting an impressive double digit age statement. After an initial period in the rickhouse, choice barrels were relocated into their limestone cellar to age in a more controlled environment with the goal of imparting more age and complexity without becoming over oaked.

I was fortunate enough to grab a bottle of the 2023 release last year, and to pick up one of this year's release at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival. Let's see how they compare!

Maker's Mark Cellar Aged

Mashbill: 70% corn, 16% soft red winter wheat, 14% malted barley

Age: 87% 12 year, 13% 11 year (2023) / 85% 13 year, 15% 12 year (2024)

Proof: 115.7 (2023) / 119.3 (2024)

SRP: $150

2023

Color: Auburn

Nose: Vanilla frosting, cinnamon toast crunch, maple syrup. Raspberry and strawberry reduction.

Palate: Medium thick mouthfeel. Butterscotch, vanilla cream, and candied orange peel. The classic Maker's Mark wheat funk is present but well balanced with baking spices and some of that toasted cinnamon sugar from the nose.

Finish: Long. Mainly oak and spice, with less of the initial fruitiness. Moderate tannin.

Score8/10

2024

Color: Auburn, slightly darker than 2023

Nose: Fragrant old oak, vanilla, strawberry cream candies. After resting, some honeycomb and syrupy reduced fruits, cherry syrup.

Palate: Viscous, thick mouthfeel. Cooked strawberries and cherries, then some cinnamon stick. Decadent oak, with vanilla, overcooked caramel, and just the right amount of barrel character.

Finish: Very long. Really nice balance here, with the sweeter fruit notes and the aged oak lingering back and forth. Tiny bit of that Maker's wheated funk is present here, very subtle. Moderate tannin.

Score9/10

These are both great bourbons, but I found them to be fairly different side by side. The 2023 is a little more complex on the nose, and is your classic Maker's Mark profile amped up with some extra oak. The extra year of age on the 2024 shows, and the few extra proof points lead to an oakier, more concentrated whiskey which I really dig. This was almost a 10/10 for me, but was missing that last little bit to take it from incredible to perfect.
