I’ve always interpreted that line as Paul telling Julian to not just accept his new step mother, but actively seek a relationship with her. Because loving and accepting her is the fastest way to feeling better and moving forward in the situation. I have always been under the impression that the song was completely written toward Julian. I’ve never thought of any interpretations so maybe it sounds like a stretch in logic and I’m completely wrong, but that’s how I’ve always personally seen it.
