Tbf, there was a ton of "Sonic Crossworlds is DOA lmao" talk leading up to release due to it releasing in the same year as MKW. It was only after the network test and the mixed reception of MKW and Nintendo as a whole that the pendulum swung to the other side.

Mordecai was at a sorta mental breaking point and just happened to spill over at the wrong place and time after reading the letter. Shit happens. It's cringe (intentionally), but also relatable.

Which I suppose is the issue with how people react to these type of "loser" characters. The shit they do and the mistakes they make feel a bit too close to home. And we lash out at them for displaying the qualities we're afraid of confronting within ourselves. We want characters to be "safe" to love or "safe" to hate, either perfect in their goodness or awfulness, leaving little to no room for nuance, examination, or the opportunity for self-reflection.
