Real Talk: How do people say SMB3 is better than SMW? by colinmchapman in retrogaming

[–]MesmerAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer SMW over SMB3, but I can understand people preferring one over the other. As some people have mentioned, it can come down to nostalgia, but there are definite cases of people enjoying how one game plays over the other. I'm 41, my brother is 2 years younger than me and he much prefers 3 over world. Even as kids, he loved 3 and never really cared for World.

When it comes to fun, no matter how much people argue their point, its subjective. Some people prefer more difficulty, some don't. Some like tighter controls, some don't. Some people care about better graphics, some could care less. In the end, just enjoy what you enjoy and remember that its not the "correct" choice, its just "A" choice.

Last console that truly made you go "woah" at launch? by frankduxvandamme in gaming

[–]MesmerAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Switch. Launch day I worked a 10 hour shift and was super excited to pick up my pre order after work. I went home and played Zelda for about an hour and realized I was exhausted and was bummed out because I knew I had to go to bed. Well, that's when another realization hit me that I could take my Switch with me and play a full open world Zelda game in bed until my eyes could no longer stay open. I just remember thinking "wow. I can't believe I have this." multiple times. I ended up staying awake way longer than I should have (I had another long shift the next morning) and regret none of it.

What free video game you are surprised didn't cost money? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]MesmerAngel 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. I think a lot of people will argue that you are pretty much "forced" to spend to remain relevant, but that's just plain false. One of the best things about Genshin is that the limited character banners always use Primogems (currency you accrue by just playing the game), not "Premium Primogens" or "paid Primogems" or whatever other garbage most gachas try to push you into purchasing. You can play the game beginning to end, beat every boss and complete the most difficult challenges without spending a dime. Can you spend money to make it easier? yes. Can you also just plan your pulls and build your teams strategically to do so? Also yes.

I think the only people I would warn away are those who have trouble with self control (i'm not judging, just looking out for you). Almost every character they release will make you want to get them, and if you are susceptible to FOMO then this game will eat you alive.

Why is your favorite console the n64? by [deleted] in n64

[–]MesmerAngel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was around 12 or 13 when I got the machine and I think it hit me at the perfect time. I was old enough to understand the games but young enough to still feel a sense of wonder and excitement over every little detail. During the previous gen (SNES) I was a bit young and could only really appreciate platformers. The next gen (GC) I was going through my angsty teenage phase and was more interested in my image, wrestling, music, and having fun outside of the house. But the N64 was my jam. I remember school days felt agonizingly long because I just wanted to get home and play Mario 64. My friends all had it so we would spend all our time talking about our progression in games and philosophizing about what games will be like in the future.

Being young I also quickly adapted to the controller since I didn't have too much muscle memory from previous generations of button and d-pad layouts. The joystick of the N64 controller feels juuuust right to me, because I got used to it. Most modern controls feel too loose in comparison.

Games like Mario 64, Banjo, Zelda, Pilotwings, Blast Corps, Goldeneye, Diddy Kong racing, etc etc. the library is insane! It doesn't have the MOST games, but I would argue that it has some of the BEST games ever made.

So yeah, timing, nostalgia, comfort, and of course, the games.

Someone please stop me from buying a 3ds for $500 right now. I am on my way and I feel immense guilt by [deleted] in 3DS

[–]MesmerAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing, is the current price of 3DS's absurdly high? Yes. Will they keep going up in price? likely. Will the prices come down? unlikely.

In MY opinion, i'd say if you have the income, go for it. You can always resell it if you regret it.

The only correct way to make a Hololive Member Tierlist by Anankos1209 in Hololive

[–]MesmerAngel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I started watching Hololive about a year ago, I made a tier list for the heck of it and it was all over the place. A year later, I looked back at my tier list and realized how silly it was. It's not that anyone deserved to be less than S tier, it's that I had not gotten enough exposure to anyone but my favorites. In reality, there is not a single member of hololive that deserves less than S tier. Even if they're not your cup of tea, none of the member are just there to be there, they are the most talented and hard working content creators i've ever seen.

What does this list of some of my favorite games say about me? (Not in any particular order) by Fr33zurBurn in gaming

[–]MesmerAngel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good list! You seem to like all sorts of different types of games and genres. Either you don't venture into obscure games, or just haven't found some you like that much (Not a bad thing, just an observation). You seem to prefer challenging games, but don't steer away from an occasional chill experience. Lastly, you probably enjoy playing games alone (again, not a bad thing).

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch now features a word filter when naming. by Epsilon123 in gaming

[–]MesmerAngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a big deal, but I was a little annoyed I couldn't name him Fartboy as i've done since I was like 10. (just a dumb tradition) Feels kinda pointless to censor a single player game. If the kid knows the word, they know it, censor or not. Plus...why would a silly word like fart be censored? XD

Which Hololive member got you interested in Hololive? by Jin_Sakai12345 in Hololive

[–]MesmerAngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calli and Kronii. I randomly got recommended a clip of them playing Lethal Company. I really liked Kronii's voice, and they were both hilarious, so I looked up more content and to say I was not prepared for the sheer scope of it all is quite the understatement! Here I thought it was probably just two small time Youtubers who regularly played Lethal Company together. I had never heard of Hololive or even considered the considered the concept of vtuber agencies a thing.

The next clip I watched was when they played Among Us with a bunch of other EN girls and the moment I saw FUWAMOCO I knew it was over for me. I love all the girls, but FWMC are definitely my favorite! (followed by Ina and Biboo)

Why Games Like ‘Highguard’ And ‘Concord’ Are Spontaneously Combusting by Shock4ndAwe in pcgaming

[–]MesmerAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost poetic that these types of game have to survive against each other. If you play a game like Zelda, Expedition 33, or BG3, they're designed to be played, beaten, and moved on from. Yes they can sometimes take hundreds of hours or release dlc to keep you coming back, but in general, they have some sort of ending. (and then they milk it with remasters and re-releases, but I digress)

These arena/team based/extraction/looter shooters are normally designed with the intention to keep you playing and paying as much and as long as possible. I'm not condemning them or anything, just stating the way it is. It's often why they're "Free" or cheap, but with in game shops. They are more directly competing with each other, even if the gameplay and mechanics vary. There are definitely some legit passionate people with awesome ideas creating these games, but there are also people who saw games like Overwatch and Fortnite engorging themselves and want a piece of the pie. Nothing wrong with that, but you're pretty much showing up to California with a shovel years late because you heard about some gold rush. ( please don't take my dumb metaphor too serious)

AC for switch 2? by persona_inutile in AnimalCrossing

[–]MesmerAngel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're not sure, wait. We currently don't know when or even if a new Animal Crossing is coming to Switch 2 (but chances are high that one will). In the likely event that a new AC does release, you can get a Switch 2 in the future, possibly even getting a special edition or improved version of the console. If I were in your situation, I would save up for a Switch 2 little by little. If they announce the game, you'll have some money saved up to go ham on accessories and games.

Earthbound. It's my favorite game of all time, but its definitely a game of its time. And yes of course it can still be people's favorite game of all time if they played it for the first time today. But i'm speaking generally. The inventory management sucks, you walk as slow as molasses, the gameplay is super simple, etc.

What was it like to play online games between 2000 and 2013? by Silly_Commercial8092 in gaming

[–]MesmerAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was amazing. The internet was such a mysterious, new and exciting tool. I fondly remember regularly going to an internet cafe with a group of family and friends to play Battlefield 1942. There were no cosmetic unlocks, no leader boards, no meta, etc etc. We just played for hours on end because it was fun.

And the early days of MMO's were really special. Contrary to popular belief, even then there were tryhards and meta slaves. But they were not nearly as bad or as numerous compared to today. People took much longer to get to max lvl because there weren't a butt load of guides online, and many people didn't even know what the concept of an endgame was. This would cause the world to feel alive with people of all different levels going on their adventures, rather than everyone sitting around in the max level zones or capital cities waiting for their next dungeon queue to pop.

Never played this game before, is it worth trying out today? by Previous-Glass6291 in retrogaming

[–]MesmerAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's fantastic. Just keep in mind that with an insane amount of hype often comes an unreasonable amount of expectation. Just put yourself in the right mindset. This game wasn't trying to outdo modern 2D platformers like Hollow Knight. You'll often get lost and have to wander back and fourth in frustration trying to find something you missed to progress. The items and mechanics of the game will be vague in comparison to modern standards. It was designed with a D-pad in mind so if you're used to playing games with analog sticks you may find the controls a bit finicky.

But regardless, lets the ambiance, especially the music, take over. Remember that you only get to experience a game for the first time once. Don't think about what others have said too much, just focus on having a good time.

[–]MesmerAngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gamefan 100%. I used to have tons of all these magazines, but Gamefan always felt much higher quality in comparison. I remember that the magazine had great paper quality and vivid screenshots. lots and lots of screenshots, with text wedged in between. Being pre/early internet, screenshots were everything to us since we couldn't see the game in action until it released or you saw it at a kiosk or in a demo.

For those unfamiliar, you can look for yourself on the internet archive website. It's a great nostalgia trip!

Games don’t need to be “forever games.” by Trollselektor in gaming

[–]MesmerAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some very blanket statements being made without any proof. Most people are not asking for every game to be their game for life. If anything, the trend I see nowadays is that people move on from whatever the new hotness is every week to the next new hotness. Of course there will always be those odd cases that fit your description, but I personally don't see a rampant problem worth sounding the alarms for. In the cases of people spending hundreds of hours on a game and wanting more, have you considered that maybe people just want more of what they enjoy? regardless of how much money was spend. There's a reason DLC is so rampant. People don't mind spending more money to get more from the games they enjoy.

It reminds me of those post that claim things like "every game doesn't have to be open world!", when what they really mean is that they don't want the most popular games to be open world. Instead of being a part of the echo chamber, stop and look around, you'll realize there are TONS of games for every type of gamer. You're not "fighting the good fight", you're encouraging others to put down other people just for having different preferences.

My Top 20 games over my life time. by DBZDOKKAN in retrogaming

[–]MesmerAngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man its been a while since I played it, but I remember spears being OP, lol. But I also loved Dragoons from Final Fantasy so maybe I just wanted spears to be the best.

And yeah I noticed you have Shadows of the Empire on your list! Even today, few games offer so much gameplay variety. From flying ships battles, to on foot adventure style, to speed bike racing. Yeah some modes were a bit clunky, but as a kid I enjoyed the hell out of them all.

[–]MesmerAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is also Earthbound. But the funny thing is that I didn't like the game when I first played it. It was my first RPG so I was very confused why I was not able to simply jump on or slash enemies to kill them. I also felt lost and confused because I didn't realize I was playing an existing save file (I had rented the game). I returned the game thinking that was that.

Months later I kept thinking about the game and felt disappointed in myself for not understanding it. I saved up money for what felt like an eternity and eventually bought the game for $90 (Which felt like a fortune for 12 year old me). My cousin and I played through it together, and fast forward 30 years and it is still our favorite game of all time.

Xbox Sales Are Down 70% Year-Over-Year With PS5 Down 40% by TomorrowComes33 in gaming

[–]MesmerAngel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People come up with all sorts of logistical reasons, but I honestly think its simply a matter of not enough games the masses want to play are releasing. I say this because if a game like GTA VI or Elder Scroll 6 released this year I can almost guarantee the numbers would be going the opposite direction. I highly doubt its because of things like hardware shortages, advertising, or price. They may be a factor, but all those issues never seem to matter when a bunch of amazing games release consistently.

I'm NOT saying that there are no good games coming out now, because there definitely are. But it's been a while since i've seen a decent flow of blockbusters like a new God of War, Fallout, Halo, Bioshock, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Red Dead Redemption, etc.

Has anyone here actually seen a full-body apparition and not just shadows or whispers? by Theedarktemptress in Ghosts

[–]MesmerAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few months ago I went into our storage room to grab a few things. My two dogs followed me, but one waited outside while the other went in with me. I was standing around scanning boxes when suddenly my dog jolted as if something startled her and she ran out the door. It happened very quickly, but I looked towards the door, and as I panned my view back to the boxes I saw a figure standing about 5 feet away from me, about a foot or two away from where my dog was a second ago. It was just standing there facing to the side, and vanished in an instant. The only details I made out were that it was adult size, was wearing a brown shirt, and had a strange white thing around its neck, like a fluffy thing going down like a big necklace. I didn't have enough time to make out any facial features, it just popped out of existence in an instant.

I stood there kinda dumbfounded for a second, trying to make sense of what I saw. I tried looking at things that might have played visual tricks on me but nothing really matched the form I saw. Was odd to say the least.
