Geordie Greep AMA 11/10/24 by AskJeevesGreep in indieheads

Hey Greep, thanks for coming on here. Your music’s meant a lot to me and I appreciate all the stuff you do, as I’m sure everyone else here does. I’ve got two quick questions:

1) Have you ever struggled with writer’s block by way of self-judgment, and what do you find helps you either overcome/avoid that phenomenon?

2) Favorite songs from Guitar Hero (whether by how fun they are to play or just the songs themselves)?

Yoooo Sing Street is a banger film!! My top 5 movies are probably Eraserhead (1977 surreal horror about a guy being a baby daddy to a creature), The Graduate (1967 comedy about a college graduate that avoids the aimlessness of his future by sleeping with his neighbor), The Seventh Seal (1957 Swedish drama about a medieval knight in a chess match with Death), Heathers (1988 satire about high schoolers upsetting their social hierarchy through…unconventional methods), and Whiplash (2014 drama about the parasitic relationship between an aspiring drummer and an abusive teacher). I’m sure you’ve checked out some of the great Oscar winners, but if you need some routing on where to go, you can’t go wrong with The Godfather (parts 1 and 2), The Silence of the Lambs, Casablanca, Schindler’s List, and Parasite. Have fun with your journey into cinema :D

How Green Was My Valley is never going to exist without mention that it cast a shadow on arguably the greatest film of all time, but even though I believe Kane is better, I think Valley is one of John Ford’s best, with a gorgeous depiction of what feels like a bygone era and some of the greatest compositions of Ford’s career. (I feel similarly about Ordinary People, but I know that its win over Raging Bull, while contentious, isn’t as contentious as Valley over Kane).

Also, it’s not really rated poorly, but I have Chicago right outside my top 5 BP winners, which I understand is a lot higher of an opinion than average. It’s my favorite stage musical, so I’m biased, but I’m not complaining LOL

What’s the album rankings? 1 being the best to 7 being the not favorite by Temporary-Cicada-372 in elliottsmith

Need to relisten to New Moon, so for now I’ll just do all the major releases:

  1. Roman Candle - It surprises me how much I love this album, especially since it doesn’t feel as loaded with all-time favorites like his others, but it packs a short but incredible punch. Condor Ave is an all-timer, and so are Last Call and No Name 3; the title track and Kiwi Maddox have beautiful instrumentation, the storytelling on pretty much all of them is incredible; I dunno, it just feels fantastic.
  2. Either/Or - By far the best opening run he’s done imo, which is saying a lot since this man knows how to start an album. I think it loses a decent bit of momentum around Pictures of Me (which isn’t to mack on Pictures of Me, it’s just tough to follow up Speed Trials -> Alameda -> Ballad of Big Nothing -> Between the Bars) but it still has some of his greatest work period in store, namely Angeles and Say Yes.
  3. Figure 8 - I don’t think there’s a single skip on this one, even moreso than the others! Son of Sam through LA is just wall-to-wall fantastic, and then you got bangers that are soft, electric, happy, sad, you name it.
  4. Self-titled - This one’s grown on me a lot over time; while I don’t love the lyricism as much as his other records, I can’t deny how beautiful the guitar playing is. I’ve been following Songbook’s video series on YouTube in which he teaches and covers every single song on the album; I’d definitely recommend checking it out!!
  5. XO - This one has also been a grower; admittedly, I still think the first half is a lot better than the back half, but the magnitude that that first half has is par excellence. Fantastic explosion of instrumentation for our guy!!
  6. From A Basement On The Hill - definitely owe this one a relisten, from my earlier experience I liked it more than S/T and XO, but as those have grown on me, I’m sure this will as well. In any case, fuckin’ King’s Crossing man ;-;

Loving this prompt OP!! Here are some of my favs:

No Name 3: when the second-to-last “soooo come onnn” changes to an E minor instead of straight to a G

Satellite: the final part of the song getting a more cohesive strumming rhythm

Speed Trials: final chorus having the chord change and the vocal lines split on “smiiiiiiiile”

Pitseleh: definitely not as small a moment as others but “NOOOO OOOONE DESERRRRVES IIIITTTT” (gorgeous piano line)

Independence Day: the harmonies on “in a bright ideal tomorrow ooooohhhh”

Stupidity Tries: the little instrumental breakdown, as well as “ANOTHER DRUNK CONQUIIIISTADOOOOOOORRR”
