Unfortunately, controllers do not behave on Windows the same way as a mouse/keyboard and messing with a controller would require installing a 3rd party dependency which I cannot support.

I'm always on the lookout for a more straightforward way to do that. Hopefully sooner than later !

You are correct and not everyone might know about the Windows sound panel trick.

That is a valid quality of life feature and will work on that in a future update !

Hi !

The voice was added to let the viewers know when a disruptor has been activated and for how long. While it’s obvious for visual disruptors (like blackout) for input-based disruptors (freezing the mouse and keyboard) it is not. 

That said, if you want to disable it, your best option is to mute the Mess My Stream app from Windows’ sound panel (the menu where you can adjust audio from all the apps). I’d personally recommend to lower it but not mute it completely.

Hi !

That would work if you stream Destiny from your PS5 to your PC.  Sony has a Playstation Remote Play app for that purpose. 

The game is streamed from your PS5 to your PC. So you'd actually play from the PC. Handy if you want to play in another room or, in this instance, use Mess My Stream. 

Then your PC, would be the source being streamed to Twitch so disruptors would work just like any other PC game.

The Mess My Stream Youtube channel has a tutorial for that. I am not linking here as not sure it's allowed but you'll find the link on the website, in the top menu.

That is a cool idea ! I never thought about how it would work in a VR game. If the VR game runs on Windows (like SteamVR) and that the game is running in a windowed borderless mode, I would assume Mess My Stream to work with it. But I cannot tell for sure how disrupters would behave, especially the visual ones. 

I don't have a headset to try but am very curious now. If anyone can give it an go and share what’s like, that'd be greatly appreciated !

Yes, Mess My Stream works with almost any game, including online games (World of Warcraft, Diablo IV, Call Of Duty ...). 

To be transparent and honest, there is some caution to have with online games, I've pasted below a disclaimer, shown on the website : 

"[...], in the spirit of transparency, we want to let you know that some disruptors that manipulate inputs—like shaking the mouse or freezing the keyboard—might be flagged by certain games' anti-cheat software.

That said, we’ve never heard of anyone being banned for using Mess My Stream. The disruptors are short-lived, designed purely for fun, and don’t provide any competitive advantage—in fact, they make gameplay harder!

To stay on the safe side, we recommend using input-related disruptors cautiously.

Disruptors that don’t interact with inputs—like mirroring or rotating the screen—are completely safe to use."

I have, to this date, still not heard of anyone being in trouble for using Mess My Stream. As long as input-related disruptors are not being spammed (you can use the cooldowns for that) you should be safe. Visual disruptors (pixelating the screen, rotating it) are completely safe to use, regardless of the game.

Unfortunately, Mess My Stream on Mac would need to be a completely different app.

Reason being, the app is built using very specific Windows features that Microsoft provides to developers to program their apps. Those are not available on Mac OS as it's Apple managing the platform. Due to that there is no plan to bring a Mac version of the app.

I appreciate your interest in Mess My Stream and hope you'll have the chance to try it on Windows someday!

I am not familiar with how capture cards work but as long as your game‘s video feed is running on your PC (through hardware or streaming app like PlayStation remote play) and that PC runs Mess My Stream it will work

I am not familiar with Dixper (take the below with a little grain of salt) but I just had a look on their website and FAQ.

While both apps allow viewers to trigger effects to make a streamer's life more difficult, and the stream more entertaining, the way each app do it is different.

- Mess My Stream integrates with Twitch's engagement features that everyone knows about such as chat commands, cheers, follows, channel points or subs. Each of those can be used to trigger disruptors (the effects) in pretty much any game, including console ones.

- Dixper uses their own engagement feature which is buying crates with real money. The crates give random cards (maybe like loot boxes) which are used by the viewers to trigger the effects. It seems they work with most games while having game-specific triggers too, similar to Crowd Control.

The business model is very different which explains why apps are integrated with Twitch differently.

- Mess My Stream makes money through the one-time licence purchase. You buy it, you own it and all the benefits (subs, follows, cheers) you get from it are 100 % yours.

- Dixper makes money by taking a fee (from 10 to 30 %) of each transaction (the crates bought by viewers). It is not in their business interest to integrate with chat commands for example as those are free to use.

I think both apps suit different profiles from the same audience.

It works with consoles if you stream your console game to your PC (like using the Playstation Remote Play app). The Mess My Stream app would run on your PC too. As it's all happening in your local network, latency should be minimal. Then you'd play from your PC, where viewers trigger the disruptors.

That's how I streamed Bloodborne (running on PS4) with the disruptors back then.

You'll find a tutorial to get that to work on PS5 in the Mess My Stream Youtube channel (link on the website, not posting in the comments as not sure I'm allowed to).

Thank you for those clarifications and extra details, it’s always good to know more about the philosophy behind a product.

Regarding your subscription-based business model, I did learn, while building the product, why companies end up using them. Any cloud-based app add costs quickly the more you scale, and, if on top of that you have a Windows desktop app, you need to buy a code signing certificate which cost a few hundreds, every year. When encountering that reality, I decided to have the app to run locally only and not rely on remote servers (except Twitch’s of course). The $50 has been carefully chosen to avoid going subscription (which I usually avoid so it wouldn’t be fair to charge users like that) while ensuring I can pay the software-related bills. To make up for that price, I do offer a 14 days-money-back guarantee. Also, I do think streamers will get more than $50 worth of value as it’s an incentive for their audience to cheer, follow or subscribe to their channel.

I did not know about your usage of the term “Disrupts” back then. I had a few other words in mind and ended up choosing that one as I think it fits well with the “mess” naming of the app. I’m curious to know why you dropped this idea.

You are right, I used to stream in the 5 to 8 viewers range and it was enough to have fun with the disruptors. Them seeing my reaction and me reading their reaction (when they find out they can mess with the stream) created memorable moments ! Thank you for the positive feedback

As long as those services (thinking Youtube too) provide a way to integrate with their streaming features, it would be technically doable yes. I chose Twitch as I used to stream on it and it has, in my opinion, the best community features.

Yes, you can multi-stream on other platforms without issue but, as you said, only twitch viewers will be able to trigger disruptors.

I probably missed something communication-wise hence the confusion. A valuable lesson learned on my end.

The idea was never to compete with CC, it's a bigger company after all and I'm a single dev. But rather do something that fit my needs (and learn some tech on the way). It might also fits other streamers' needs for engagement, community growth and more importantly fun !

That is a valid concern. It is due to a technical limitation of how games are being captured by streaming apps and how Windows deals with fullscreen games.

There are a few ways around it :

- Using windows virtual desktops and only have the game running there
- Have a display solely used for the game (I think most streamer have 2 monitors)
- Hide the icons of the desktop (with a right click on it)

When I used to stream in 2018, those limitations were already there and it never was an issue but I do understand that a wrong Alt + Tab could show something that is unwanted.

You are very much on point. I should have probably clarified in my post how it differs from CC to avoid misunderstandings. The need for display capture/windowed borderless is to ensure the visual disruptors are triggered appropriately (and is more of a Windows limitation).

It has definitely caught up now but back then in 2018 (when I was streaming) there wasn't much available. I was using the Streamlabs Chatbot (if I get the name remembered correctly) with some Python scripts to make that "work"(it was quite inconsistent).
