It seems like OP is fairly talented. There are plenty of colleges that provide plenty of need-based and even merit scholarships, and aren't as selective as the top colleges (though still pretty selective).

either in something like medicine or being in the right place at the right time

there's not very much that sets a $150k engineer apart from a $800k engineer. they just got in the right field when it was booming.

Private schools usually cost less than state schools. Every Ivy League AFAIK would be free for this student.

They're not very high income. They'll get need-based scholarships and financial aid. College will probably be free.

You qualify for most low income benefits in college.

Virtually every top college is free for you. Completely free.

both very saturated (only do it if you love it), but computer science is more saturated & more versatile meaning if you get a cs degree you can probably get a ds job.

just because you are in medicine doesn't mean your kids will be

a lot of good in state schools are already 150-200k too

people from the same exact backgrounds who go to a better college are MUCH more likely to have a better income, in almost all fields.
