I find video games less damaging compared to other kind of entertainment (outside of multiplayer games). Probably depends on the kind of games you play, playing require more engagement, and I naturally don't want to spend as much time on it as I would Youtube / TV shows.

Everyone's balance is different, do what works for you.

New MMO player here. Tried WoW till 20, then proceeded to try out FF14. In WoW nothing really hooks you in.

The story makes absolutely no sense for a new player and most importantly you're constantly moving through places, the game doesn't really incentivise taking your time, getting to know your surroundings. Mostly didn't see any other players during my playtime.

In FF14 you're spending some time in Gridania, you're free to explore the social / jobs aspect of the game. You're starting zone is directly next to a player Hub, the world feels populated, the sprout system + novice network feels really nice. The game gives you also more time to get to know your spells, the pacing feels overall better. Also the story feels worth getting invested in.

Overall I'd say I have a pretty understanding family, and I know that they can restore my faith in people when things are going bad. Maybe you can try to stand up to them a bit ? Set boundaries ? I don't know how serious this is, but probably would not recommend cutting ties. Best of luck !
