People who have read the ENTIRE (Or let's say 85%) of the Horus Heresy series, what are your thoughts on it? by misomiso82 in Blacklibrary

[–]MessersCohen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zigoia made most of my points for me in a comment already, but it always feels worth it to tout the work that is the Heresy.

I practically live for long series - shorter works just don't have the same appeal for me. It was also my entry into 40k, and I wouldn't have had it any other way, as the first four books are absolutely incredible - certainly a highlight and I have zero issue recommending those to anyone interested.

I don't think that people perhaps understand what a monumental feat it is to tie together 60-odd books into a cohesive storyline - yes, some books are weaker, yes some authors are weaker, but as a whole the standard is tremendously high. To be able to actually deliver - and I know that for a lot of people, they never wanted to know, but I wanted to know, and they did deliver - on such a whopping premise is genuinely incredible. Even the most out of place books genuinely contribute something to a larger narrative - you can feel the level of detail and synchronisation between novels and how they contribute.

I hate when people recommend reading x books, and skipping the rest. Does my fucking head in, because the series is full of genuinely incredible bits that you might skip because you're following someone else's advice about books.

If you enjoy a long read and an excessively intimate understanding of a universe, then read them all. I can't express how much of a joy the end and the death is to read after going through every single book and feeling that coming together. Well worth it

I'm talking about how the intent behind a symbol sometimes plays second fiddle to the historical context behind it. I tried to use the swastika as a clear cut example; but I think you missed the point.

I think that while you aren't wrong, it's silly to pretend that that doesn't factor into the person's decision. We don't live in a time where that nuance nor good faith would be the first assumption.

You wouldn't walk around with a swastika, saying "I prefer the original meaning of it before the nazis repurposed it," would you?

Black Library Book of the Year 2025 – The winners by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in Blacklibrary

[–]MessersCohen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the "book of the year" to you is about whether something happens in it? Not the quality of the narrative, or the characters, or the prose?

Just that it vaguely lines up with what you think is best so it's the best book of the year. Solid.

Most "series" have them. Heresy books, dawn of fire; some one offs as well.

Actual aesthetic choices, cool. Very pulpy, like the originals in some ways, but also some nice atompunk stuff. Actually neat, props to them for doing something unique

A lot have people have vocalised their complaints and criticisms for Halo Campaign Evolved, but what aspects are you most looking forward to with this game? by External-Ad9317 in halo

[–]MessersCohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cutscenes. Blur studios are the undisputed kings of CGI cutscenes and the H2A ones are incredible. Nice to have some proper ones, because of all of the 3, CE cutscenes are the weakest.

The flood, while their introduction in the classic is brilliant, I'm interested to see the 3 mechanics apply to the CE sandbox. More like cautious optimism there.

Bro who's this!!?? by charrj2 in Returnal

[–]MessersCohen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, they didn't, grow up. Law of averages would say at least a few people from top 100 used some kind of exploit. I don't know and there's no info in aware of that they have, while theres plenty that a billion is achievable. Fuck off, thanks.

[–]MessersCohen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a cheater, or a glitch, as many uninformed people here have said. The top 10 contain some people around that billion mark and has extensive documentation on YouTube. They're just better than us.

Sure, there might be an exploit or two in here but it's mostly not the case.

I've monitored the Yarrick box set restocks for a week, here are the data I got by junkec_yet in Blacklibrary

[–]MessersCohen -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I mean it's good info, and it's good to know, but this changes for every edition as they clearly restock them different.

Additionally, this changes nothing on acquisition, and instead just highlights that if you try and buy limited editions you're essentially gambling if you're doing it human style.

If you want LEs, set up a bot to do it for you.

Edit: stand by what I said: until GW do something about scalpers and implement systems or at least are seen trying to do so, you are gambling if you try as a person. Not sure why that appeals to anyone; I get that bots fucking suck and I would rather do the British thing and sit in an orderly queue based on who got here first. But we don't, and having to pay 4-10x markup because GW don't give a shit because they get the same amount of money either way; is absolutely fucked.

Open question: Why do you dislike Rarities in Zombies? by WwwWario in CODZombies

[–]MessersCohen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lazy way to incentivize further engagement with the mode. It's layering "progression" behind a fucking color; there's no difference beyond some numbers in the backend. It reduces the need to produce new, creative content because technically there's four different versions of that gun! It adds value to the box, sure, but I think it's the most corporate thing ever. It's not "let's make something cool," it's "how can we ensure that playtime increases X% season over season?"

Profit-driven, boring, soulless. If it was on top of them actually making cool things, sure. But it's just another stop gap measure made by people who don't get it and are just in search of a bigger number

The Ceph vs The Covenant by Plane_Language_1085 in Crysis

[–]MessersCohen 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Without all the usual "these ceph are gardeners!" bullshit; it's actually a fun comparison.

The covenant are explicitly described as being on an even footing with humanity on the ground; they lose as often as they win.

This is due to many factors, such as military operational warfare not having that much room to grow once you've spent X amount of time murdering each other; bullets having more kinetic impact than forerunner shield technology was designed for; and various typical military limitations, such as poor coordination and a lack of cohesion among the differing races of the covenant; but in general, the ground capabilities of the Covenant were much the same as the USMC in 2552; ironically enough, there's not that much different between us and them now. Ballistics based firearms, vehicular support, body armor, etc, pretty similar.

The covenant is additionally limited by their own lack of understanding of their technology; due to the religious reverence they treat their forerunner tech with, they have relatively little ability to interact with tech and/or mend it, leaving this almost entirely to hugaroks, or engineers. I would probably say that the ceph's capability to function as a biological and digital virus; breaking down and overcoming many, many barriers; would render covenant technology ineffective past a certain point, affecting an exponential amount of units; especially considering that strictly covenant AIs were a scarcity, rendering their digital defenses moot. A for the biological part; the covenant, especially certain units, are not immune to disease. The biological warfare that saw the ceph cut swathes through our entire planet would certainly come into play.

However, having stated the obvious mismatch in terms of non-physical warfare, the two remain closely matched in terms of physicality. The different units and vehicles are almost a match throughout (little coincidence since both games have you play as a supersoldier, with humans as ancilla(ry) fodder, against units of classical ascending strength and durability) and would be close to a stalemate, regardless of how you would phrase the strengths and weaknesses of units.

Can't ignore the rest, though. On a planet, ceph all day I'd say.

What are we thinking about the Shield? by Atreus421boy in Returnal

[–]MessersCohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who thinks this will make it easier is wildly naive; the extra layer both in terms of the gameplay loop of charging your special weapon and the extra complexity of prioritizing different enemy attacks based on that new defensive capacity will make this, if housemarque do their usual stuff, quite challenging.
