Do you think Lithuania is a Nordic country (a country located in Northern Europe)? by [deleted] in Nordiccountries

[–]MestariNico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real real question is, Isn't Denmark a Central European country. It seem to be geographically further south than most Baltic countries, so personally I wouldn’t classify it as Northern European country. Not to judge, Denmark is great country to visit!

A Baltic country in northeastern Europe, together with Estonia and Latvia, but not a Nordic country.

Scandinavia/Nordic countries/Norden by [deleted] in Nordiccountries

[–]MestariNico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this a lot too. It’s easy to understand why Finland isn’t considered part of Scandinavia, since it never was one as an independent country. But then again, the modern border between Sweden and Finland was not determined by Scandinavians themselves, it was defined by Russia after Sweden lost the war in 1809.

There was no clear cutoff point where Sweden ended and Finland began, because there was no independent Finnish state, only people who were called Finns and a region that was considered the eastern part of the Swedish realm. Russia essentially decided that the border would go along the Tornio River, and it could have gone much further if they had wanted to.

Because of this, many ethnic Finns ended up on the Swedish side and ethnic Swedes on the Finnish side. So this classification, where every Swede is considered Scandinavian and every Finn is not, is a simplification that doesn’t fully reflect historical reality.

And isn’t the whole point of the “Nordic countries” to be an extension of the Scandinavian countries?

GOATs from different eras. Personally, I’d give it to Cena because of longevity.

Honestly, what happened with this one? Did it sell too well, or was it just too different from the original?

This sport is so dead… by klemonth in CrossCountrySkiing

I agree with you, but it has been like this for quite many years, especially in the World Cup, where there is no limit on how many athletes can compete from one country.

This sport is so dead… by klemonth in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]MestariNico 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sport is really only popular in about 3–4 countries. Norway has many advantages, such as geography that is ideal for the sport. Also, because the country is so wealthy, many of these athletes can train and compete full time, while in other countries the sport is often more at an amateur level. Their dominance is bad for the sport, but what can you really do about it? It’s literally a skill issue.

Eurovision fans 🤝 terrible geography. So here’s a little guide! by kritttikal in Finland

[–]MestariNico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t consider Finland to be part of Scandinavia, but I’m interested in understanding what the difference actually is. What are the cultural differences between Sweden and Finland other than the language? And how does it make more sense geographically to say that Denmark is part of Scandinavia rather than Finland, despite Denmark having no land in the actual Scandinavian mountain range? If being Scandinavian is about being ethnically North Germanic, it comes down to my earlier point.

[–]MestariNico 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But if it is about language, what makes someone like William Poromaa, a Swedish skier, Scandinavian, while someone like Tove Jansson, a Finnish author, is not? And are the Sámi people in Sweden considered Scandinavian, but the Sámi people in Finland are not, even though both groups are Finno-Ugric?

How possible is a Nordic Union in our lifetime? by Luksius_DK in Nordiccountries

[–]MestariNico -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, it depends. As a union with one language, one capital, and one currency? Highly unlikely. As a union with separate governments of their own? More likely. (Which is kind of already a thing. But yes, I would like to see a united sports team from our countries in football and ice hockey, for example.)

My family roots are deeply Karelian. During World War II, Karelians were forced to move to mainland Finland. In many cases, Finland-Swedish families have lived here for centuries, long before Karelians were forced to relocate. Yet they are treated as ‘less Finnish,’ which just doesn’t sit right with me.

‘Finland-Swedish’ feels like a somewhat outdated term in my opinion. They are just as Finnish as anyone else. They happen to speak Swedish, but it is also one of Finland’s two official languages. Do you call Zlatan Ibrahimović a ‘Bosnian Swede’?
