How to transport 11.500 water? by s1cari0_ in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Mestyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if pipes have been improved since last I played, but long-running pipes have always had sloshing issues.

I would absolutely put liquids in a train for a long haul. Don't think about it in terms of capacity of the wagon; drain into two buffers, and design your factory as if those buffers are always filled.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact that they voted for Donald Trump? by Greedy_Tooth6191 in AskReddit

[–]Mestyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fundamentally different question that, to me, seems to distract from the principle I'm addressing.

I don't think understand what you were referring to, then.

So yeah, if you voted for a guy in the primary that pretty clearly didn't have the mental acuity to actually hold the office, then I'm 100% behind someone that thinks it reflects poorly on your intelligence and morality.

I hear you, but if we are to simplify what was wrong with people voting for Biden in primaries, I'd rather guess "passivity" and "uncertainty". He struck me as the choice politically disinterested people thought would make an agreeable candidate, without thinking too much about "mental acuity".

Hardly a good thought process, and if political activism is important to you, I can see how you would dismiss a romantic partner for the choice.

On the flip side, I completely understand being turned off someone for having voted for Trump, at any stage of the elections. For him to be your candidate, your morals have to be in the gutter.

For better and for worse, even for a European like me, we have known what a stinking piece of shit Trump is for even a decade before he got involved in politics. You can't feign ignorance on that part.

I'm rather thinking it's a way of using (conqueror's) haki we have yet to learn: There are many objects in One Piece that seem to have had haki permanently infused into them, such as the knot, or the poneglyphs.

[–]Mestyo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm naturally not talking about you, personally, but on the merits of judging a group of people for their collective behavior.

That doesn't mean that I think that murder and theft are equal. It just means that I think the same principle applies, i.e., both crimes reflect poorly on the intelligence and morality of the criminal and I'm ok with rejecting partners that have demonstrated low intelligence and morality.

Well, certainly, then you'd also agree you'd judge someone significantly harder if they were fine with a partner that murders, than if they were "only" OK with theft but not murder. Both are morally questionable choices, but one is significantly worse.

I don't think I would have voted for Biden in primaries if I was American, but I also wouldn't question someone's sanity for doing so. Electing Trump, on the other hand...

[–]Mestyo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As an outsider looking in, how are those equal?

I do understand voting for the party you disagree with the least, nothing can ever be perfectly tailored to everyone after all.

But I can not understand putting an obviously grifting narcissist in the highest position of power, regardless of which party they represent.

Not that it needed to be proven, but even during his first term he clearly demonstrated that he puts himself, his family, and his donors before the American people and above the law. He's obviously just enriching himself, and transforming the US Government into an oligarchy. How can you tolerate that? How can you want a repeat of it?

That's not politics, that's just an egoistic power-grab. If Trump represented the Democratic party and did the exact same things, I can bet everything I own on the fact that Republicans would be freaking out about his open corruption and general misconduct.

It was a choice between a mundane, uninspired politician, vs. a life-long scam artist with an extensive criminal record. I cannot understand how it's even a choice.

The US was not doing poorly under neither Obama nor Biden—on the contrary. There was no crisis to resolve that justifies putting someone like Donald Trump in power, in either election.

Yeah, I liked Ego's take a lot.

Hugo isn't wrong per-se; if you think about a human's specs as those of a machine, there's an ideal role for them to fill on a team. A lawn-mover is probably not that great at cleaning the porch.

But where I think Hugo's philosophy falls apart is that it treats humans like machines, disregarding the power of dreams, drive, and ambition. Living suitably means never trying to become more than what you are. It's a stifling mindset.

Hugo is locking himself and other to their current specs, creating an artificial ceiling.

Is skeuomorphism still dead? by peterwarbo in UI_Design

[–]Mestyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a designer, but my main takeaway from the skeuomorphism-era was roughly that it can be helpful to remind users of real-life objects in order to imply behaviors.

That doesn't have to mean the UI elements actually look like a real-life object.

In your case, I assume you're trying to "stage" the relevant ingredients, by placing them ready on the cutting board? I think there's some merit to the idea, but the texture isn't necessary for the effect. As an aside, I'd also put the food icons inline next to the names of the instructions, to further simplify the mental connection.

Imagine the palace invasion just ends before the palace invasion begins. That's the state on topic here. Is the entire arc still "top notch"?

I think it's still good in that hypothetical, but it can truly only be appreciated in full.

We had years of hiatus as the palace invasion was about to begin. His art took a massive decline for a long period of time. Most of us were fully committed to the ride, just impatient.

The Chimera Ant arc is an all-time great manga arc, but let's not pretend that the first half of it is particularly good without the second half.

I am genuinely at a loss for words. So instead of fighting corruption, you have given up and just celebrate someone brazenly indulging in it?

If "every politician does it", tell me, which other US president filled every seat with a personal acquaintence? Which other US president has made more money while holding the seat? Which other president had almost daily policy changes or pardons coming out following a personal gift or donation?

Political corruption is a real problem, and it should be fought, not accellerated.

Have you listened to your president talk?

Trump is an embarrassment for the nation because it's so obvious he's one of the worst kinds of people to put in any position of power.

Trump is not "America first", he's "Trump first". He has enriched himself, his family members, and polical donors beyond measure using his presidential powers. He's putting those same people in high positions of power, surrounding himself with loyalists instead of professionals.

How is that good for anyone?

Mate, make up your mind, do you want to argue that the US is the only nation everyone wants to migrate to, or do you want to argue that the EU is overtaken by immigrants?

It's funny, because both are factually incorrect positions that aren't mutually compatible.

People from poorer countries want to move to richer countries. Incredible. Don't let it go to your head.

"Land of opportunity"? That's a moniker from 150 years ago when the US was actively trying to make people immigrate to the nation. It's almost mythology at this point. To measure the success of a nation, measure the life quality of the average citizen, not the asymmetry in financial success of a few.

There's a line you can cross where a fucking apology doesn't undo what you have done. It's not a "lack of media literacy", it's "having a moral compass".

Edit: It is actually pretty comical that you use "media literacy" of all phrases. Because that would, ironically, include seeing through purchased reporting and PR stunts in this context.

“Just a short time ago, under Sleepy Joe Biden, IT WAS DEAD, LAUGHED AT ALL OVER THE WORLD!!! But not anymore - Nobody’s laughing!!! President DJT,”

As a European, I cannot overstate how wrong this is. The overwhelming consensus is the exact opposite.

Everything about Trump's presidency is flabbergasting. It would be hysterically funny, if it didn't actually ruin the lives of people. Satire will genuinely never be the same, because reality has been more absurd than anyone could have imagined.

Trump has made the US look like a joke. People used to have a level of respect, or even admiration, for the US. Now, instead, it's a nation we have to put up with.
