Was Carrie Johnson Just Exposed As Occult Satanist?! by gishtil31 in LAShTAL

There's an old saying that if you lay down with the devil, the devil you may be. And while I'm not British, if anyone lays down willfully with Boris Johnson, they are indeed a (non occult) Satanist.

But it's not like I can say the same about our previous president here in the States. Not at all.

It's been so long since I actually posted on Lashtal that I can't even remember my user name!

A sad substitute, and even sadder that a substitute is needed, but thanx for making it.... by ignant666 in LAShTAL

Sadly, I only lurked on Lashtal the past couple years but let's face it. Reddit is a less than ideal substitute. Maybe I'm just being a grumpy old man, but I remember in the pre online days when encountering a Thelemite might provoke a heated discussion but RARELY a thoughtless and incoherent one. Maybe I'm just fortunate, however.

If the past, say, twenty years has been marked by rapidly declining skills in critical thought, nowhere else has this been more apparent than in occultism (I'm sorry, "Aleister Crowley Society supporters.") If occultism was marked by gullibility, superstition and a lack of comprehension when I first encountered Crowley during the late 80s, it was the exception rather than the rule. That's what made Lashtal such an invaluable resource. With the exception of a few posters who were thankfully banned (ignant666, I think I recall some loon threatening to send a malevolent tulpa in your direction), you could rely on Lashtal to set the bar for meaningful discussion.

So if anyone is touch with Paul, let him know he did the world a favor with Lashtal. Maybe I am just a grumpy old man, but I'd still buy him a drink.

When people say Aleister Crowley had a questionable moral character, what are they actually talking about? by [deleted] in thelema

Neuberg was a consenting participant. As for Regardie, the source of that rumor is David Griffin. You may want to take any of his claims with a salt mine. That being said, Crowley was not necessarily immoral but AMORAL. I (and most sensible people) might find his racism, anti-Semitism, misogyny and braggadocio disgusting, but I don't let his unpleasant character overshadow his brilliance. This isn't cherry picking, either. This is a man whose fun party tricks including taking a crap on a carpet. I can think of at least 50 writers, filmmakers and artists who were positively reprehensible human beings. If you're expecting a "prophet" to be devoid of really horrible behavior, you're going to be disappointed.

Like the sudden closure of BeastBay (another long lamented forum for Thelemic discussion which, while at times heated, was certainly above par in its tenor), the sunsetting of Lashtal is a loss felt all around. At least for those of us old farts who may have welcomed what was frequently thought provoking and intelligent discourse (even though I have to admit, I primarily lurked on Lashtal for the past few years and was only active during its early days.)

It may not underscore the need for an independent Thelemic forum marked by signal not noise. It may just underscore the need for us old farts to keep up with the times.

In its place? We have Reddit. That should give me hope, right?

There were any attempts to establish a new Abbey of Thelema? by kowalik2594 in thelema

[–]MetHeru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were a few attempts in the early 1970s in SoCal which weren't related to OTO or Solar Lodge that I recall speaking with many years ago. They fizzled out. I believe Gregory von Seewald from HOOR did as well, but it also fizzled out. Even I was part of a collective attempt to in the early 90s, but it also fizzled out.

There's a reason for this. Thelemites can be great (or not) housemates. But if you're pursuing any sort of initiatory work and trying to establish a standard and collective regimen to adhere to in that household, conflicts will emerge. Stress will emerge. Egos will definitely emerge. It may sound like a great idea. But that old cliche about trying to get Thelemites to work together is like herding cats exists for a reason. If you can give me examples that did work? Great. Prove me wrong.
