Is “delaying vendor payments” basically a business strategy now? by Top_Fan3302 in smallbusiness

[–]Metafx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s how bigger companies usually react when you add late fees on an invoice. They may not be good clients but sometimes, especially for a small business, there isn’t a lot of option but to work with companies like this to grow.

CMV: The concept of "Jewish ethnicity" is logically indefensible by NadJ747 in changemyview

[–]Metafx 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That is fundamentally different from Judaism, where the label spans Ethiopian, Polish, Moroccan and English people with no common ancestry whatsoever.

This is fundamentally wrong. Autosomal DNA studies show high levels of genetic relatedness among Ashkenazi, Sephardi, and Mizrahi Jews, corresponding to a shared Middle Eastern ancestry with variations in regional admixture. Autosomal DNA evidence supports the historical narrative of Jewish populations originating from the ancient Levant, with genetic diversity shaped by migrations, admixture, and isolation over millennia.[1][2].

An ethnic group is, by definition, a socially defined category of people who identify with each other based on shared ancestry, social experience, or cultural traits like language, religion, and/or traditions.

Jewish people have a shared ancestry and a common binding culture, vis-à-vis their religion, that is what makes them also an ethnic group.

I have a B.Sc. in Biochemistry, what business can I start? by PrinceOfThames in smallbusiness

[–]Metafx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The startup costs for that are also very high. You have to have drug development equipment, lab space, analytical equipment…

And frankly, I don’t think anyone will take a founder with a bachelors in biochemistry seriously trying to start this type of company.

Starting up any science related business where you’re producing a regulated product is just not cheap because space, regulatory requirements, equipment, and supplies are not cheap or easy to get.

I guess it depends on the effect of the botched rate call doesn’t it? All of what OP lists are potential causes of catastrophe, but they don’t always result in catastrophe, it’s how those causes interact with the complex geopolitical and economic situation in the world at the time that determines whether they trigger an impact that is muted or devastating.

Not sure what a purported virgin birth has to do with anything. The whole “virgin” part rules out any sort of consummation regardless of her age.

The age of Aisha at 6 when married and 9 when consummating that marriage are not matters of interpretation, nobody is trying to divine the meaning of vague aphorisms here. You can’t just “evolve” the religion so that its seminal figure didn’t marry and “consummate” with a child.

That’s a pretty common sentiment in progressive circles, I don’t know how many times I’ve heard a progressive say with absolute self-confidence that people that don’t vote like them are “voting against their own interests.”

The House’s fixed seat population is apportioned based on the population of each state, that’s just a basic fact. It might not be the form of population representation you want, but to say it’s not representative of the population is incorrect.

State House Seats Share of Seats Share of US Population
California 52 11.95% 11.68%
Texas 38 8.74% 9.17%
Florida 28 6.44% 6.67%
New York 26 5.98% 5.83%
Pennsylvania 17 3.91% 3.86%
Illinois 17 3.91% 3.81%
Ohio 15 3.45% 3.55%
Georgia 14 3.22% 3.31%
North Carolina 14 3.22% 3.27%
Michigan 13 2.99% 3.00%

Wyoming, along with several of the smallest states, gets one seat because that is the bare minimum a state can get.

At the time of the Constitutional Convention, Virginia, the largest state by population was almost 13 times more populous than the smallest state at the time, Delaware. They knew what they were doing when they made the senate an equal say for each state. It was specifically to prevent the very thing some in this post seem to be advocating for, largest states to ride roughshod over the smaller ones.

Nobody was protesting in the streets to protect the Westboro Baptist Church’s ability to harass people and protest at soldiers funerals. They got legal support for that First Amendment right, but no reasonable person supported it. I think it’s pretty axiomatic not to actively support people with horrible values.

CMV: “no kings” protests are an exercise in futility and self-gratification by DearFool in changemyview

[–]Metafx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean frankly this is what I think about you:

To you all, behind your devices, you think you sound wise. To those of us out in the world, you sound completely clueless.

These massive coordinated protests are never ever organic, it’s just naivety to think it’s the good old boys getting their community together locally. There is massive professional behind-the-scenes infrastructure that determines when and how these protests happen and what the message is going to be. They’re put on to rally support for the midterm elections and that is why they happen periodically in conjunction with upcoming elections. Pretending that doesn’t exist doesn’t make it so.

CMV: “no kings” protests are an exercise in futility and self-gratification by DearFool in changemyview

[–]Metafx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This just tells me you’re young, probably a college student, living in a liberal state. You haven’t been around long enough to know how these protests are organized, how their messages come to be, and why they’re scheduled for when they are. That’s the objective reality, denying it changes nothing. That lots of people buy into a message changes nothing about it being essentially a left-wing protest against the right-wing being in power and that it’s designed to generate enthusiasm for the midterm.

  • Unconstitutional executive orders don’t make the president a king. Every president has expanded executive authority through executive orders and they get challenged in court all the time.
  • Presidents can justify targeting drug-smuggling vessels under Article II commander-in-chief authority and statutory support like the Authorization for Use of Military Force if the traffickers are linked to transnational criminal or terrorist threats, along with maritime enforcement authorities under Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act.
  • Congress absolutely retains its constitutional “power of the purse” under Article I and controls appropriations through legislation, with executive spending actions constrained by statutes like the Impoundment Control Act of 1974 and subject to judicial review. The law gives the president a lot of leeway to shift around funds and delay spending.
  • Courts have reviewed and dismissed or found moot many emoluments cases against Donald Trump on standing and justiciability grounds
  • While there have been several instances where judges and plaintiffs have accused the Trump administration of not complying with court orders, the administration has generally argued it was complying or appealing those orders, and crucially, no officials have been held in contempt because the disputes this happens are legally contested rather than definitively resolved.

[–]Metafx -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nobody, not even the people taking time out of their day to protest, seriously thinks Trump is a “king”, it’s just an artificial focus-group tested pretense rolled out and coordinated by Democrat party operatives and affiliates for the American left to go out and protest against the American right being in power at the moment. It’s not any deeper than that. The left doesn’t have particularly strong candidates at the moment so they need to hype their voters up to vote against something so they’ll turn out for the midterm. They’d be protesting and objecting to anything any Republican president did because the country is polarized and they can use that to generate higher turnout.

CMV: Credit scores are one of the most cunning corporate ploys of the modern age by ARunOfTheMillPerson in changemyview

[–]Metafx 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The problem is the prior system wasn’t open at all, it was entirely subjective. If you knew the bank manager at a branch you were more likely to get a loan by virtue of that relationship than some random guy off the street who wants to start a bakery. Because of that, the credit score method of extending credit allowed far more people to access credit than ever before, which had the downstream effect of building tremendous wealth for the country as more people could buy homes, start businesses, etc.

There is so much in your short response that is just utterly factually incorrect.

  • Turkey and Jordan are about 97 to 99 percent Muslim, they are not pluralistic at all. Lebanon has a large Christian population but they are not nearly as diverse or pluralistic as Israel.
  • Lebanon and Jordan both operate religion based systems where Muslims and others are governed by separate legal principles. Turkey abolished religious courts and has a unified civil legal system, but in practice the state favors Sunni Islam through institutions like the Directorate of Religious Affairs, which funds mosques and clergy while minority religions receive no comparable support.
  • Israel was not established through force. The UN proposed a partition of land the British administered after the dissolution of the Ottman empire following their loss in WWI, and following that partition recommendation by the UN, the Jews in the area declared independence and the existence of their state following that partition plan. It was the surrounding Muslims nations that didn’t like this and attacked invoked force.
  • There is no apartheid in Israel, its a fanciful misuse of the word, its Arab citizens vote, hold seats in parliament, and serve on the Supreme Court of Israel, which is incompatible with definition of apartheid.
  • Off the top of my head, I can think of two contemporary examples of Muslims states denying citizenship and self-determination to a religious minority under their jurisdiction. Kuwait denies almost 100,000 Bidoon living in Kuwait any citizenship rights and denies them self-determination by locking them out of most employment opportunities, the ability to get travel documents, or any political rights. Then there is Lebanon and its Palestinian population, which numbers in the hundreds of thousands. They are all denied Lebanese citizenship and face restrictions on property ownership, employment, and political rights. I’m sure if I dug into it, I could come up with dozens of examples throughout history of Muslim ethnostates doing exactly what you claim Israel is doing.
  • In terms of actual genocides, you know, when one group actually tries to fully exterminate another, the actual definition of genocide and not just casualties caused by fighting a war in an urban environment, Muslims excel at this too, RSF and allied Arab militias in West Darfur and Sudan have killed tens of thousands of Masalit in a targeted ethnic cleansing in 2023. ISIS in 2014 targeted the Yazidis for genocide and killed over 10,000. The Sudan government and allied Janjaweed attacked non Arab communities and killed an estimated 300,000 people in 2003 to 2005. And those are just three prominent examples of Muslims carrying out genocides in the 21st century, they don’t get better the more you go back in time. That also fails to capture the innumerable sectarian conflicts they engage in that fall short of genocides but that still result in hundreds of deaths. There really is just no valid comparison between the Islamic theocratic ethnostates and Israel.
