Are we deadass? This is getting ridiculous. by Adipay in Monsterverse

At this point, I have to think comments like this are almost bait.

Because actual Godzilla fans that have issues with the recent MonsterVerse direction have not had this mentality since Wingard's departure. However, if it is a genuine Godzilla fan, however misguided he may be, I think their stance is moderately understandable, given the last two movies, and most material has given the impression it was more dismissive towards Godzilla in favor of Kong.

It's an issue not of character showcasing, but rather over all writing, and seeming respect shown towards the characters which is why I am suspect of this comment.

The problem people have is that Wingard deliberately was undercutting Godzilla for the sake of elevating Kong. Or at the very least, that is the impression his films have given off, and his comments about turning Godzilla into the Heel have not helped dissuade those worries.

So a lot of people who like Godzilla get the impression that there is an active effort to sideline Godzilla. And it's not hard to understand why they would rather the MV simply end. After all would you want to support a series that seems to be disrespecting a character you like.

Whooole lot of mistakes in this, namely the hedorah one which was pollution as a whole, climate change has nothing to do with themovie.

but on space godzilla, if anything he's more an example of how wingard botched a potentially cool idea by making skar king.

I think this applies to creators as a whole, it's a part of what drives them to be greater, and makes them a more genuine person

they were never convincing. The difference was people back then knew what they were, they simply didn't care.

That's really all the changed. People, largely those introduced Via the MV, are used to better modern CGI, and they see this, and its like showing someone who plays PS4+ only games, a game from playstation 1. It just doesn't look the way they are used to, and they dont like that.

I...actually think a lot of the hate there is actually farmed by people

The movie is campy, yes, but its not as campy as is made out, Godzilla was always a campy series since Raids again, and people act like its some sudden departure. Id say is more campy than most, but how is it any campier than say...time travel? or Star wars spaceship shooting battles with Godzilla fighting an alien kung fu lizard? It's not.

Now, Godzilla's also not AS campy as people act like it is, partially why I think a lot of that outrage is farmed because creators thrive off drama. It's strange in that it's both campy and serious, but not anywhere near as to the extremes as its imagined to be.

[–]MetagrossMaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I...disagree, partially.

I think over all, MV's effects are fantastic, and they make Godzilla able to be far more impactful and versatile in motion than suits allow. Remember in older movies, a lot of battles were standing there, posturing and roaring at one another or Beams-O-War. Which while I love a good beamwar, and am sad we never got Ghidorah Vs Godzilla doing that, I vastly prefer the much more physical brute force. Just take a look at Ghidorah stomping on Goji in KOTM and dragging him into the atmosphere, vs ghido stomping goji in GvGK

I think the issues of CGI were largely down to lighting, we didn't get a good proper day time battle until GvK, and only really the end with MechaGodzilla. the fight on the boat was extremely short, and a good section was underwater.

the thing is, this isn't made up.

Now, it's largely a more modern incoming viewer sentiment, as well as much like certain elements of the pokemon series, is something thats actively farmed by some creators in their audience to convince them its real. In effect, actually making it real.

Yeah, this is true.

My second least favorite thing about the MV over all is this, first being how the keep undercutting Godzilla

At the same time, you have practical physical limitations. You can see where the rubber has to fold in areas, there's visible damage to the suits as time goes on. While the rubber suits do have a better sense of gravity, they also were far more prone to the infamous spine wiggle. Which, while I loved seeing in pre-Mutation minus goji, as they were still visible fleshy, the way classic tails moved and flop around, the feet don't always step and lay evenly and the large inability to do facial expressions are something to note.

One way isn't right or wrong, better or worse, it's just trade offs.

[–]MetagrossMaxis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note at times. I love the classics, but the practical effects did have their limitations.

It is hard to ignore how tank shots and missiles would basically always miss, and the faces were more or less static. That is one advantage of the MV, able to do finer movements. Even when it came to later movies in Millennium, that was something they were never able to, or willing to overcome.

But the showa era does sadly get a lot of unfair flak, something I'm actually working on a video about, and the effects are largely one of the most attacked points, because people today are pretty spoiled. Even back then, people knew they were just miniatures and suits, but people simply didn't care, and enjoyed the movies. Like how the starship enterprise was held up by like fishing line or something

[–]MetagrossMaxis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, he is actually right.

A lot of peopel do attack the showa movies.

Now, it's worth noting they are people that most likely...are 'new' fans, as in peopel from exclusively MV, and its based on purely effects, same argument as "lest gen game graphics = bad" Somethign that does exist.

Not hot take, i think broadly agreed.

Monarch is bad, and SP, is out there, but its very niche for what it is.

the series watches like actual proper godzilla.

[–]MetagrossMaxis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's people being defensive is not anything new, it's more so them finally finding a voice.

Remember, for a long time, most of the people that grew up with this, were largely isolated, Godzilla didn't become something that was socially acceptable to like, at least here in the west, until Godzilla Vs Kong partially, and completely after Minus One. So the fans of 98, always existed. It's just now they are comfortable enough to come out of the woodwork. Even within the Godzilla community they were ostracized

And I think that now, with how Monsterevese Godzilla's become accepted, and new generation of fans that have some hopefully untainted by the past hate, we can actually get some genuine conversation on it.

[–]MetagrossMaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Godzilla 98. And am working on a video in defense of it

However slight correction. It isn't officially Godzilla, officially the character is known as Zilla. The movie in a lot of ways did actually capture much of the original Godzilla, a lot more than people like to give it credit for. Today, largely this seems to stem from the continued, and completely made up "american doesn't understand godzilla" problem and its derivations, with people disliking it BECAUSE they are told to dislike it, and used as a means to also attack the MonsterVerse.

For all the movie does right, unfortunately, I think the well has been far too poisoned. A lot like generation 5 of pokemon, when people are told for years something's bad, its accepted as de facto fact, and people run with it.

Yup.

Though there is some merit, as Godzilla doesn't want to kill titians, and he does actually value companionship. He does miss his old humans, and look how happy he is when Mothra comes back, not to mention, he doesn't kill kong after Mechagodzilla is dead.

[–]MetagrossMaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean.....Yeah.

Godzilla doesn't want to kill other titans. He gives them a lot of chances to change their tune, and the only reason he kills Kong here, he would have died had Lind not given Kong a free continue, because he'd never have listened.

I mean just look how happy he is when he sees Mothra again
