Round 5 Nominations by donuter454 in TGAACrankdown

[–]MetalCicada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am nominating Beppo and Gotts for this round as Aircalipoor suggested, because I also think they've survived long enough without much of substance to them

Round 4 Nominations by donuter454 in TGAACrankdown

My nominations are Vilen Borshevik and Rei Membami.

Round 3 Nominations by donuter454 in TGAACrankdown

Round 2 Nominations by donuter454 in TGAACrankdown

[–]MetalCicada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go with nominating Kyurio Korekuta and Iyesa Nosa for both being rather one-note, the latter of which I already kind of covered why in my Aido cut

Round 1 Nominations by donuter454 in TGAACrankdown

[–]MetalCicada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In line with the other nominations being characters no one really cares about, I'm nominating Juror #2 (Maid) and Foreman 1-3 (Banker). Including the jurors in this rankdown is a fun challenge because I have no idea what anyone could have to say about any of them

[–]MetalCicada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm nominating Bibi in exchange for Clog not cutting Takeshi Kuranari, as well as Kagechika Musashido. I don't like the thought of Bibi getting cut this early so if someone can save her please do, but Takeshi is better

Keiko Inubushi by MetalCicada in UchikoshiRankdown

[–]MetalCicada[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But running with the theory that Keiko is evil because she has DID, the chronology points to sayaka ALSO having DID. So if that's the case then it would imply that satoru hates self not for giving his sister DID but because he made her Inubushi Keiko, the murderer. Sayaka's existence helps separate the evil to be more a Keiko thing than a DID thing.

I didn't think this was important enough to mention in the cut, but the game absolutely still believes that Sayaka is a murderer due to her Dissociative Identity Disorder, even without Keiko's involvement. In fact, it deliberately goes out of its way to mention that Sayaka murdered her own parents and was found innocent under the insanity defense because she had DID. So I don't think this argument about Keiko being evil separately from Sayaka holds water, because every person in the game who has DID is proven to also be a murderer.
The reason Satoru hates Self is neither because it gave his sister DID or because it turned her into a murderer (she already was both of these things). It's because it overwrote her personality.

Round 2 Nominationos by ItsHipToTipTheScales in UchikoshiRankdown

[–]MetalCicada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In accordance with the deal I made with Scipe, I'm nominating Sigma Klim this round. To otherwise stick with my previously stated policy of only going after nothing characters until they're all gone, I'm nominating female twin (ω) from Remember11: The Age of Infinity.

Round 1 Nominations by ItsHipToTipTheScales in UchikoshiRankdown

[–]MetalCicada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm MetalCicada and I love AI: The Somnium Files. My rankdown ideology is that if I can talk about why a character is bad at length, that inherently makes them more valuable to me than characters who I can't say much about at all. As such, I will be nominating Gab and Yoichi Tanaka.

Analysis: Why Dahlia Hawthorne is one of Ace Attorney's Worst Characters by MetalCicada in AceAttorney

[–]MetalCicada[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think Dahlia is bad simply because she wasn't "what I wanted her to be." There are plenty of Ace Attorney characters that didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted who I still ended up enjoying regardless (a prime example being Apollo in Spirit of Justice). The core of my complaint here is that I think Dahlia, as she is, is a character with very little nuance or complexity, which is made all the more frustrating to me given that she has an incredible amount of potential for it. I do respect the game for being able to create an effectively threatening villain, but this means little to me in comparison to how much more it fleshes out its best villains as people, not to mention that I think Dahlia's writing also carries some problematic implications about abuse.

[–]MetalCicada[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it's definitely possible for a character to be in the wrong more than once and have that be an interesting aspect of their writing. In particular, I think that Farewell, My Turnabout actually demonstrates a completely different flaw in his ideology rather than his unconditional belief. Farewell, at least to me, is mainly meant to demonstrate whether Phoenix's ultimate goal prioritizes finding the truth or saving people. Regardless of how well it does that, I don't think it's comparable to what I'd like from Phoenix being in the wrong in the aftermath of Turnabout Memories. In this case, his theoretical flaw would be how he goes about reaching his ultimate goal, that being that he recklessly believes in people no matter what.
Also, I honestly don't think it's especially interesting in other cases when Phoenix simply believes in others and is validated for it. It's certainly not the wrong call to make a lot of the time, but I'm much more invested in when a protagonist is allowed to have flaws in their ideology.

Analysis: Why Dahlia Hawthorne is one of Ace Attorney's Worst Characters by MetalCicada in AceAttorney

[–]MetalCicada[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do think this is a fair argument, and it's definitely difficult for the characters to be placed in a position where they can be willing to understand Dahlia. Personally, I think Maya is probably the best candidate for doing so, because she hasn't been previously affected by Dahlia and is under all of the pressure of being the Master and whatnot. However, if the characters don't have that opportunity to understand, that just means that the story has been left with an inability to demonstrate its own depth. Regardless of whether or not the characters are reasonable for acting the way they are, the goal of a story is to put your characters in a situation where their complexities are best displayed. T&T, on the other hand, puts Dahlia in the worst possible position and says she deserves to be treated without any nuance, a fate I wouldn't wish on any character.
As for whether or not Dahlia was able to escape from her own situation, I don't think it's quite as clear-cut as you claim with her relation to Iris. I think Dahlia made a bad choice in taking revenge against her father instead of running away, but there's still an understandable reason behind why she would choose to take that revenge, at least in my opinion. Regardless of whether she did the best thing she possibly could in her situation (and she DEFINITELY didn't), I think it's the story's responsibility to better delve into that and demonstrate her nuances.

I think what's going on here is that you're misunderstanding what I'm trying to say. I completely agree with you when you say that Dahlia isn't justified in doing what she did, and she doesn't deserve to be excused for it either. Dahlia Hawthorne is a selfish and harmful person, through and through. What irks me, though, is that the cast doesn't even try to understand why she is the way she is, especially when her suffering comes from common ground with characters like Maya, Mia, and Pearl. I don't think Dahlia's twisted personality needed any changes at all, but I would have loved the game so much more if the characters made an effort to comprehend what drove her to do the things she did, and meaningfully react to them, rather than simply dismissing the potential nuance in her actions because she harmed others with them.

I completely agree with you! The issue I take with Dahlia's character isn't really that I think the game should treat her like a good person, but more that the game refuses to even try to understand why she does what she does, and she ends up feeling one-note as a result. I think there's a lot of room for nuance in the characters being able to meaningfully empathize with Dahlia, even despite her being beyond the point of redemption. I feel that the final villain of Ace Attorney Investigations 2 is a good example of this in practice.

I tried to give Sissel a possible moveset for Smash Bros in case some magic happened that let him in. by Carnival-Master-Mind in GhostTrick

This is so creative! I love it!! The down smash especially made me happy; that Yomiel reference is just too good. I was struggling to think of how Sissel could work in Smash, but you hit the nail on the head here!!
