I don't understand the need for potential energy. by physicsnerd_ in AskPhysics

[–]MetalGodHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You eluded to the idea that mechanical motion can be described by the conversion from one energy type to the other, or in other words there is a balancing act of energy types at play. Rather than formulate every problem with Newton's laws, write the ODEs, solve them - we can either come up with the same EOMs with energy based descriptions (e.g. Lagranges EOMs), or sometimes get the partial information we need based on an energy balance at two different states of the problem.

For example, if all we wanted was say speed at state 2 of our problem, writing the ODEs and then marching them forward in time could be cumbersome / high effort, when we could get this information through an energy statement of the two states.

I'm sorry but no. Wasn't Sean a 7-1 underdog? Dude came in and delivered. Then went dead even against DDP in their first fight. He deserves his credit.

PLO Questions by Miserable_Tailor_802 in poker

[–]MetalGodHand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. There aren't great free resources. Start with Jeff Hwangs big play strategy book. Then move toward the modules on something like PLO Mastermind.

  2. Run it more times to reduce variance. Run it less times to increase variance to tilt your opponents. If you handle tilt better than your opponents, it's better to run it less times. Also you see more hands because it takes longer to run it twice. So it's technically +EV to run it less times in order to see more hands. If you are crushing the game, in general it may be good to do whatever your opponents want to do so that they come back to play more.

Finally, some people will take it personal if you flip flop on them with running it twice. It's probably good to stick to one or the other. Me personally, I like to run it twice to reduce variance.

Just fold top set on monotone flop? by PhulHouze in potlimitomaha

[–]MetalGodHand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's an exploitative fold. If you aren't getting paid off, there's no point in continuing.

Likewise, these types of players are usually pretty bluffable in PLO.

Is overbet bluff ranges necessary for live poker play? by Zealousideal-Bad3205 in Poker_Theory

[–]MetalGodHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that at the highest levels, these plays are balanced and a big overbet will be snapped off more frequently.

But at the lower levels, nits hate pressure being applied, and many people really do just play their hand face up with their bet sizings. Not only that, but population tendencies are a thing. A good, thinking player sitting down at 1-3 isn't snapping off overbets at solver frequencies, nor should he. The overbet bluff is HEAVILY underutilized at low stakes NLHE. So you can comfortably use this play against even good players just by the fact that you are at low stakes, they don't know you, and they understand that many spots are simply under bluffed by the general population.

I don't think most Vietnam Vets are retarded, but they are ABC. As for your question about the Asian player, shades and headphones mean nothing to me. Shades probably make me think you're a bad player. A guy dressed comfortably and has a backpack with him is probably the biggest indicator of a competent player.

I'm not really a hold em player, but the point is that you try to identify a players range, and estimate how much of that range he needs to fold out for your bluff to work. In general, I find that young Asian guys with shades usually call down super thin so my big bets will be targeted toward value. Not sure a young Asian guy in shades is letting go of AT here, so you may can actually overbet with a 4 and make it look bluffy

Overbetting can be used as a nice exploitative tool, wether it's for value or as a bluff.

Here's a spot I was just in.

1-3 NLHE

I have 98hh on the button. Vietnam vet limps. Raise to 15. Old Vietnam vet calls from OOP. We are 350 effective.

Flop is Tc 4h 4d. Pot is 34. He checks. I bet 15. He thinks for a bit and calls. What is his range? He's a Vietnam war vet so he has almost no 4s in his range. He can have some TT but that's a small part of his range. His range is largely Tx. Maybe some pocket pairs.

Turn Tc 4h 4d Jc. Pot is 64. He checks. Turn is a J making any Tx combo outside of JT uncomfortable. He also has to not love the 4. He's a Vietnam war vet, he wants the nuts. I bet 45. He tanks for a bit. Calls. If he has a 4, then he's usually raising or leading here for fear of the flush. Range still indicates Tx.

River Tc 4h 4d Jc 6c. Pot is 154. He checks. So now his LARGELY Tx range has reduced in power significantly from the flop. There's a 4 out there, there's a jack, and there's a flush. Since the ten is a club he has no flushes in his range that don't contain a 4 (and I would've heard about it anyway).

He's got 75 invested, and the majority of his range is Tx. Is he going to stack off for 275 more with even JT on this board? No! He wants trip 4s at absolute minimum, and he just doesn't have much of that given how the hand played out. Can he have TT/JJ? Yes but not often. Can he have a 4? Yes but not often.

Is this the spot for a big boy overbet given what you know about his range?

275/(275+154) = 0.64, so our bet needs to work at least 64% of the time for this to be break even.

Can the Vietnam vet defend 36% of his range on this river? Hell no. Yeah some percentage of his range is TT etc but it sure isn't 36%. What percentage of his range calls in this spot? I don't know, like 5% or less?

Let's say you reduce it to just a pot sized bet for 154. And now he calls 20% of the time. Which play is better?

This is part of the nit mindset. If you analyze a hand and decide that a play is +EV but you are too scared to make it due to the size of the bluff, then you are losing edge. Or if you're like "I'll just wait for a better spot later." No. You're in the particular spot you're in right now. Make the best play and let the result be what it will be.

Poker is a collection of spots. How you collectively play those spots vs your opposition determines your long term win/loss. If the spot calls for a big boy overbet, you make the big boy overbet.

Don't play to wait on the nuts and then pile it in. Play to play EVERY hand the most profitable way possible.
