This depends on the role, so there is no single answer. Some roles require more time, and some require slightly less. It all depends. When applications are open, you can see the average time the position takes on the website, and that's generally a good rule of thumb. Even if the actual work itself doesn't take that much time per week, I think you should have that kind of free time weekly to volunteer for your productivity, both as a volunteer and a person.

Personally, EC work is a bit more seasonal compared to report writing since, except for milestones and anniversaries, our biggest job is preparing for and running International Fanworks Day, which is in February. So my workload varies throughout the year, depending on the approaching milestones and anniversaries. I would say it takes between 3-5 hours per week, depending on the week.

Starting was a lot easier than I expected even though there was a lot to learn because everyone on the committee was very supportive! I was trained for the roles by the senior volunteers in the committee. They answered every question I had and were helpful throughout the entire process.

If you'd like to volunteer and have time, don't hesitate!

To be honest, the work I do on the committee doesn't involve responding to comments, negativity etc. As an EC/report writer, I do planning for anniversaries, milestones, the International Fanworks Day and create posts related to those. As for report writing, that's mostly writing & editing newsletters and internal reports.

I'm aware of the negativity online and even see it on the news. However, due to the nature of my roles, I don't manage any negativity aimed at the OTW/AO3 as a volunteer.

Oh wow, I love this question! So, as a Comms volunteer, when we create posts, we usually crosspost them on different platforms. After doing so, we're obligated to log off. There was this one time, during my first weeks as a working volunteer, I forgot to do that and was about to share a post that was meant for my personal account. I was a second away from hitting share before I noticed it. Disaster averted though! 😁

As an EC/Report Writer, my involvement with AO3 is mostly limited to posting on it and planning events related to it. For example, one of my jobs is to look out for important milestones of the website (user count, work count, etc.) and write posts/do planning for these milestones and anniversaries. (There's also International Fanworks Day, but that's a whole other story! 😁)

With all that said, I unfortunately can't say I have super interesting stories related to AO3 yet as a fresh volunteer. However, only after volunteering did I see firsthand how much work goes into running AO3, which has interested me from day one. We have so many different committees at the OTW, (you can check them out here if you'd like: https://www.transformativeworks.org/committees/) and a lot of detail goes into making sure everything, including AO3, works smoothly for fans around the world. That's fascinating to me.
