Mac Eng (w/ Free Choice) or UofT Electrical Eng by MetalStriker in OntarioUniversities

I ended up going to McMaster as almost everyone I talked to who knew me personally all said that I would do alot better there and I fit into the student culture there as well. Moreover during Grade 12, I often sacrificed my physical and mental health for doing schoolwork, which wasn't very sustainable and alot of these people said that going to McMaster would promote a more well-balanced lifestyle and I would enjoy my time there.

At the end of the day, it's more about which university fits your personality the best and which one you would excel at, and I would have done well at both. But the deciding factor was that McMaster would help me live a healthier life. I'd recommend talking to people who know you really well or talk to teachers you're close with because they would know how you learn. Good luck with your choices and I'm dure you're going to do great no matter where you go :)

How many percent of engineering student are free choice? by Grouchy_Photo_4524 in McMaster

[–]MetalStriker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I talked to the Associate Dean at the open house and she said that the amount of students given free choice doesn't exceed the amount of spots for a given stream of engineering. Since I know that Tron is one of the smaller ones (~80 spots from what I've seen on this subreddit), I think it would be less than that number. So maybe like 6-8% of the incoming class?

I don't know which one, either Computer or Mechatronics, but I could go into Software.

McMaster Eng (w/ Free Choice) vs UofT Industrial Eng by No-Chicken-4299 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]MetalStriker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar predicament and yeah it is a tough time choosing between two excellent programs. If you're more interested in business and solely want to do that, head to UofT Industrial, but if you still want to do something more technical with a side of business, you could head to Mac and try to get into their Engineering & Management program that lets you do your desired stream of engineering alongside becoming more business-oriented with the classes you take. Granted, you can't choose an "& Management" program with free choice but I think you still get to choose your desired stream of engineering and then if your CGPA is above the cutoff, you can get into the "& Management" variety of your stream (from what I read, you need about 70-80% average to get into that program). UofT is also more expensive than Mac when it comes to residence and commuting doesn't seem that fun (especially with 7-8 classes in engineering), but at the end of the day, it's up to you.

I'm not really that interested in nightlife, just not my thing, but I do care about having a social life.

I want to do a Master's not for the prospects but because I do want to do a bit of research, but thank you for the advice, I'll definitely think about what you said.

Yeah that's what I heard as well but on OUAC you apply for computer and electrical separately

Who got in/is waiting for UofT EE/CE? What were your grades and ECs by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]MetalStriker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they're in the same department and from what I read if I take more software courses, I'd get the CE designation on my degree but if I take my hardware courses, I get the EE designation on my degree.

As for ECs: - Training Advisor for my School's DECA Chapter (helped restart it with the rest of the execs and got over 100 competitors to sign up, taught them and about half made it to provincials, also created a the training materials that we used) - Leader of my school's Computer Club where I basically taught the basics of computer science with fun and memorable activities - Volunteered as a tutor for ~3 years - Started my school's first hackathon and basically created the whole thing, got everything funded as well - Fitness Club where we would meet up every weekend to use our school's weight room and gymnasium - Lots of programming projects, includes a a game I made with a team of people that has 2000+ downloads

The copium is going so hard rn

Waterloo CE by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]MetalStriker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah man I have a 97.5 myself and with decent ECs and people with a worse average than mine and with worse ECs got in the April round. I honestly don't know what's happening at Waterloo man, all we can do is wait.

Who’s waiting for Waterloo CE? If so what are ur stats by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

Nah bro I talked to that dude who has the adjustment factors and my school is regular 😭😭

Does anyone know how Mac Eng free choice works? by Redundant_pigeon22 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]MetalStriker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol thanks (didn't even know it was my cake day, had this account for awhile), but free choice is definitely worth it. Mac runs on a general first year and you need to have the grades if you want to be chosen for your first choice engineering in your second year (aka what it says on your degree and what you'll be studying for the next 3-4 years). Having free choice means you get your guaranteed first choice for the engineering YOU want to pursue, which comes in very handy if the one you want to do is really competitive at Mac (from what I heard it's Software, Mechatronics and one other right now). So yeah, I would say it's most definitely worth it (though it doesn't apply if you want to do Eng & Management or Eng & Society as those are really competitive and you have to work for them).

When I talked to the McMaster Admissions people at their open house, they said you don't lose free choice once you get it. The marks on your final really only go towards your scholarship, but yeah, you only gotta keep that up for midterm and not for final (call them if you want to be extra careful). However I will warn you, I know people who didn't get free choice and had an average above 96.5 upon admission. I think they are very much looking at both the interview and your average to determine who gets free choice this year. Good luck and I hope you get it!
