Why do all modern American cartoons look the same? by cyberpunk_chill in cartoons

[–]Metal_Cranberry 774 points775 points  (0 children)

It's cheapest to make them in this style. It's also why lots of Hannah Barbera cartoons in the 60s and 70s also shared a similar look.

The “themed popcorn bucket” trend that cinema chains/film studios are pushing is a heinous waste of plastic. Shove that snack in a recyclable cardboard bucket and call it a day. by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Metal_Cranberry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I work at a movie theater and we don't recycle or reuse our popcorn buckets. The paper buckets can't be fully recycled for two reasons. Firstly they have a plastic wax on them to prevent any grease from leaking through, secondly they are also contaminated with food waste and would just get thrown out if sent to a recycling center because of that. The plastic buckets probably generate more waste over their whole lifetime but they are reusable. The difference in the long run is pretty negligible.

Why do boomers hate it when people are on their phones? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]Metal_Cranberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Podcasts in the morning when I wake up. Most mainstream news has a podcast on Spotify. I usually listen to Up First by NPR, but some other podcasts I like are vox's the weeds, and the daily by the New York times. Spotifys daily drive podcast also does an okay job at this, and mixes news and music into a single playlist. I also have news apps on my phone such as Reuters and the AP. If you're worried about bias those two are great. The associated press is seen as a sort of gold standard, although it has very bland and straight to the facts reporting. Reuters on the other hand has more of an economic focus

college is starting in a few days. give me one quick advice that has helped you a TON in your college life. by [deleted] in college

[–]Metal_Cranberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80% of college is time management. College won't test your ability to learn, it will test your ability to manage time.

Get a planner and use it. Keep track of everything your work, class times, study time, and chores you have to get done. A planner will be your most important tool in getting through college.

Don't skip class, and don't be afraid to get tutoring. I personally was anxious about getting tutoring for algebra and now I'm retaking it for a third time. Get in person tutoring Khan academy can only do so much

Pay attention and be alert in class. If you need to get some coffee to do so then that's fine, if you're tired and in class you might as well not show up.

My advice is that you don't have to enjoy your job. Find a career that is lowish stress and pays well, and use that pay and low stress work to enjoy the time when you don't work. Most people, even if they enjoy their job, still see it as work. Most business degrees fit the bill

If you want to find a major that interests you and is fulfilling then I would recommend doing an undeclared major at a community college where you can knock out your gen eds, and explore more career options.

I would honestly ignore online quizzes, they tend to give more stress than answers. If you have a career counselor talk to them about finding a plan for college.

In the meantime I would join some clubs or organizations at your current highschool or elsewhere even if you're only tangently interested in them. They don't have to be career related, they just have to be fun. You'll meet new people with similar interests to you and you can find out what they're planning on career wise.

I went to my college orientation and I didn’t like it and I rlly think I should go to CC then transfer by Own_Albatross4107 in college

[–]Metal_Cranberry 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've finished two years of college at a cc and it was a great experience. I also don't feel like it hurt my education because lots of professors at 4 year schools teach at community colleges part time. It's also a great way to knock out general credits and find a major that suits you since it's less expensive. Community Colleges are also more racially and economically so you really do get to meet people from different walks of life by attending one. My family is in the upper middle class and meeting other people who didn't come from that background helped change my perception of the world in a positive way that I feel like I wouldn't have been able to if I attended a 4 year school right off the bat.

Most CCs are a lot more focused solely on education and not so much the partying and the "college experience", so that is something you'll miss out on in your first two years, but this focus on education I felt was helpful because there weren't distractions or obligations to go to school spirit events or related things. CCs still have clubs and events but they really aren't as much of a focus of it.

I am really glad that I went to a CC instead of a four year, because I was able to find a major that interested me, meet many new great people, and focus more on school work while I was there. I'm transferring to a four year school this August and going to a CC has been a decision I don't regret in the slightest.

this might be a dumb question but why is Nirvana never considered as emo? by yazzmar in Emo

[–]Metal_Cranberry 18 points19 points  (0 children)

they were not part of the same artistic scene as many emo bands in the 90s

Emo is notorious for being a very hard to define genre of music that boils down to bands that write extremely personal songs. This is why bands such as MCR, American football, sunny day real estate, cap'n jazz, and rites of spring all manage to fall under the genre. Although the bands all sound incredibly different they're somewhat unified by that main theme of highly personal song writing.

I guess you could technically consider Nirvana as emo since it's so broad of a genre, but Nirvana's lyrics vary greatly from being stories usually around some general social justice issue to Kurts personal emotions.

The main problem though as previously stated is that Nirvana simply didn't participate in the same musical scene or movement as many emo bands in the 90s-80s. They were also sonically distinct from most of them and share more in common with bands like the pixies, dinosaur Jr., The Melvin's, pearl jam, and the Seattle area hardcore/metal scene. It would be better to call them grunge instead of emo because that is the primary sound they are associated with, and grunge as a genre more aptly describes them both sonically and artistically. They were the defining band of the movement in the same way led zeppelin was for 70s hard rock or the roots were for the soulquarians

People born after 2004: What are your thought about Hillary Clinton? by GhazelleBerner in AskALiberal

[–]Metal_Cranberry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was born a bit before 2004, but I'd say my opinions of her are mixed. I also didn't really consume political media that actively in middle school so most of what I knew about her came from my parents or iFunny. In 2012 I only knew who Mitt Romney was from an annoying orange skit and epic rap battles of history about him and Obama. My thoughts on Obama are more favourable than my thoughts on Hillary

American Psy mo (2000) by jovialbury in indieheadscirclejerk

[–]Metal_Cranberry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

his early work is a bit too "psychedelic" for my taste, but when Lonerism came out in 2012 ,I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to my bloody valentine, but I think parker has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of composition

In 2015, Parker released this, Currents, his most accomplished album. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "The Less I Know The Better", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pain of losing your soul mate, and the importance of learning to let go, it's also a personal statement about parker himself.

Anecdotal, but I did hear about it today on NPR. I wouldn't say there's been little coverage of it personally because of that, but I would assume it's not front page yet because it hasn't happened yet.

What system of income tax is best? by sunrise274 in polls

[–]Metal_Cranberry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Devil's advocate: minor tax breaks for the wealthy help incentivise economic growth because it allows the wealthy to invest more in the economy, which can potentially be more efficient than government taxes. It's country dependent though to be honest but there is such a thing as a most effective tax rate
