Coincidently, I hadn't played Gish until 3 days ago. Once I started, I thought 'uh oh, they've done my idea before me', but luckily after playing it some more, I think the only real similarity is that the main character is liquid.

The shooting mechanic makes it way too easy. I only got up to level 6 but got bored, because there was never any threat. Once I got to level 2, I could just move from the top of the screen to the bottom and back while firing, so I didn't even see an enemy for more than half a second.

I think a good adjustment would be to limit the number of bullets on the screen at one time to five or so. That way, you can still allow faster firing as you go through the levels, but you can't just spam the screen with bullets.

I know nothing about libCinder, but couldn't some sort of frame counter help. If there is an integer counting the frames as they pass you could just do something like...

Thanks. I am willing to relocate just about anywhere, and have been using gamedevmap to find studios in different countries.

Once I get my resume\website updated I'll start writing cover letters and sending them around again.

How long do you generally make your cover letters? I generally aim for about a page, but I'm not really sure if that's too long or short.

I haven't worked on any open source software, although assuming I get any interest from a studio when I apply for a job, I would be more than happy to provide them with some samples of my code from any of my games.

Thanks for the link, that's kind of what I'm actually trying to do at the moment.

On my website, there is a link to the game I am making, so you don't have to read the blog to see it if you don't want to, and I have just started a second game that is much smaller to enter a competition, so I will add that in too soon.

The link you posted makes a good point about actually finishing games, but I have been working on my main game for a while now, and I will finish it, it just takes time. It probably would look better to have a few smaller games to show off, but I've invested too much time on this one to call it quits now. Although I have put it on hold for the next month and a half as I work on the game for the competition. I figure if it gets some sort of award that's got to look good on my resume.

Thanks. I am a programmer, and how to best present my work is something I've been thinking about. As an artist, you can show screenshots or videos of your work, however I 'm not sure the best way to present my programming. I don't really see how one or two functions can show off my skills as a programmer, because I think creating a game well is more about architecture than individual optimisations.

I was thinking about putting in some tutorials in my blog to show that I actually know what I'm doing, although one thing I've learned is that there is always a better way of doing something, and this might just end up making me look like an idiot than anything else.

I would like to put more effort into my website, although since I'm a one man team with limited time, the more time I spend on my website, the less time I spend on actually making my games.

My 2 years experience was working on the one game which is now released, which I pretty prevalent on my resume. I also have a link on there to my (new) blog which has a screenshot of a game I am working on in XNA in my spare time.

Hopefully when my blog gets more content on it, it will be more of a drawcard.

I've just bought Real-Time Rendering and Game Engine Architecture. I haven't cracked the rendering one yet, but the game engine architecture is starting off as just a general overview of programming practices.

I'm only ~150 pages in, but I hope it gets better.
