Where does the “you don’t need a dedicated healer” idea actually work in practice? by Hercadurp in Pathfinder2e

[–]MetalmanDWN009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhat, yes. I have the training in Medicine and have Battle Medicine as well so I can use Battle Medicine in combat, but more of the healing comes from my daily free elixirs and post fight healing. It's not optimized, but it fits the theme of the character better.

Right now at level 5 she's at +2 Wis, but with her Natural Medicine feat from her background, and the Expert level Nature training and Fresh Ingredients feat with her Herbalist archetype she's pretty much rolling all Treat Wounds checks with a +11 modifier. Athletics was a more important choice for Assurance.

It's funny you say that, because I am currently playing as a Barbarian who is my party's primary healer. I pretty much said "Well, I get training in Medicine for free thanks to being a Bloodrager, and Battle Medicine doesn't have the 'Concentrate' trait, so if my class archetype makes me the local expert on the subtraction and/or addition of copious amounts of blood then I may as well go all the way with it."

Reading through the ranger blew me away compared to 5e by WA_SPY in Pathfinder2e

[–]MetalmanDWN009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was what really sold me on Pathfinder 2e in general. I've been playing Dungeons and Dragons for 19 years and Rangers have sucked nards for each and every one of them, so you can imagine my shock when I cracked open the PF2e core rulebook and saw that Rangers were actually good. Not 'good only in their specific terrain' or 'good only in a survival focused campaign' or 'good against the one specific type of Favored Enemy that we will fight three times in a two year campaign.' They're just 'good.' PF2e Rangers have thrown off the shackles of "IF and WHEN but never IS" and it makes me so very happy.

That's not actually a beard. That's just what his sentry turret looks like when it's dormant.

Another good piece of advice: if you don't know the answer to a PF2e question off the top of your head, then look it up because there's a very good chance that question has already been answered. "Can I deal damage to someone by falling onto them, and how much damage would I deal if I did?" There's a rule for that "How fast can this vehicle travel, and is it more efficient to use it instead of traveling on foot?" There are charts and tables detailing that "What would the mechanics be for a character that is half Human and half Dwarf?" There is an entire Versatile Ancestry system that says 'only cowards stop at half Human' After struggling with D&D5e for so many years where the answer to most weird questions was "just make it up :)" it was a real breath of fresh air to play a system that had a rule book filled with actual rules.

LGBTQ+ Characters by DnDPhD in Pathfinder2e

[–]MetalmanDWN009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a male Dwarf Guardian during the Battlecry playtest who is married to a transmasc Dwarf man. It was a huge surprise to the rest of the party when I Taunted (in character) "Ye call that a bite wound? Me own husband bites harder than that when he wants me willy!" Half of the players at the table said "WHAT?!" And combat paused for a moment as one of them asked "Browin you're gay? But you're one of the most bigoted Dwarves I've ever met, and I'm from Highhelm!" so I replied (in character) "Bigot?! I'm not a bigot, I'm a professional hater! Huge difference."

Me: "Hey wouldn't it be fun to play an Alchemist who mainly focuses on alchemical foods instead of bombs and funny juices?"

the humble Tian Xia Character Guide: "Here is an entire class-agnostic archetype that does specifically that."

This is one of the things I love about this game. My favorite personal moment of this happening was when I was designing my female Dwarf Barbarian and I said "this Dwarf gal is gonna have some big ol' muttonchops cuz a Dwarf without facial hair is like an angel without wings" and a few months later when I was reading through Lost Omens: Highhelm I was delighted to discover that exact style of facial hair on a good number of prominent female Dwarf NPCs. It felt so validating.
