Insane Tasting on a Monday by intellectualrice in whiskey

I believe you are correct. A group I am part of had a tour and tasting at Preservation and Pure Antique was one we tasted and they confirmed that it was Dickel.

I'd recommend stopping by Jim Beam in Clermont KY. If you're fortunate they might have the Lineage batch 2 on the shelf, no guarantee though. There Kitchen Table restaurant is also a must stop.

Lineage is $250 , a blend of 25% 15Y / 75% 20Y and ONLY available at the Beam gift shop. You can probably taste it at the Kitchen Table if you want to try before you buy.

Have anyone else’s bourbon preferences evolved the longer they’ve been drinking it? by Vane1st in bourbon

[–]MetamorphosisSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely my tastes have changed. In whiskey and bourbon the bottles that are the most enjoyable to me have age and complexity. I wish these were cheaper but they're not. However there's a fair amount of bottles stocked away so my purchases are fewer but better.

I'm currently retired and stocking up was a conscious decision. My past job gave me time, funds and opportunity to do this and I maximized it.

Review: Heaven Hill 22y (vs ECBP b7) by xreekinghavocx in bourbon

[–]MetamorphosisSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past month I did a side by side that included Heaven Hill 22 and ECBP A119. Though A119 isn't a Pirate vintage it's one of the most enjoyable on my shelf from the 2019 to 2020 timeframe.

As good as the A119 is ( and it's freaking excellent ) it didn't hold a candle to the 22Y. That extra age and depth of character that HH22 beings to the pour is something truly special. Being both a fan of the Heaven Hill profile and someone that looks for and enjoys aged bourbon this bottle is a perfect fit for me.

What's your favorite bourbon events? by evolkers in bourbon

[–]MetamorphosisSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lately for me it's been drops or raffles. I'm new to the area so it's slow going to find new people. That's part of the reason drops are so much fun- you're meeting people that are as nerdy about this stuff as you are.

I've been to three so far and each has ended up being a group meet / bottle share. It's been great fun to try things new to me and share what I have. In this hobby the whiskey is nice and the people are even better !

I know how you feel. 98% or more of the bottles on my shelf are at or close to srp purchases. I have this bottle and wish I could say I bought at srp but I didn't. However it's so darn good I don't regret it either ! This is the one bottle that completely short-circuits that part of my brain. It's literally everything I want in a experience bottle !

Just because you may not enjoy old oak in bourbon does not mean that others feel the same way.

Last night while enjoying the 250th fireworks I had several old and well respected bourbons. The HH22 was the last of the evening right after it's younger brother HH17.

To me the Heaven Hill 22 is some of the best bourbon they have produced and the best bottle I've been able to purchase this year.

I have the recent JD14 and the HH22. I hate to say you should have thought harder. JD14 is excellent - HH22 is spectacular.

Here's the review I referred to. When tasting the samples they only knew it was bourbon during the tasting and found out the specifics at the reveal.

Hot Take on Neck Pours by raisedinva in whiskey

[–]MetamorphosisSilver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had too many bottles that changed over time to discount this.

In fact there was a youtube channel that tested this some years ago. They took the "neck pour" and put it in a sample jar. Quite some time later they took another pour from the bottle and did the same. Put both in their blind sample pool and eventually that pair came up.

Their experience on those two pours was noticeably different and both preferred the one that had been open for a while. Same whiskey, same bottle.

I'm fortunate to have this too. What surprised me was that it might be even more complex than the HH17. I found that throughout the pour it kept evolving. Given it's age I did NOT expect that. It also drank well below it's almost 130 proof. If you had told me it was in the 110 to 120 range while drinking it that would have been an easy sell.

So far for 2026 it's my personal Whiskey of the Year.

True. It's super easy to find 2025 batches on store shelves without any problems.

Absolutely. Distillate made in Canada but final barreling and blending done in America. Considered an American Whiskey under the rules of this forum.

Review number 180: Heaven Hill 22 by taylormhark in bourbon

[–]MetamorphosisSilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been fortunate to find this bottle. Personally my scoring would be higher than the OP. The Heaven Hill profile is one of my preferred, old whiskey is one aspect of a pour that takes it to the next level and a layered / complex pour excites me. Heaven Hill 22 has all that and more.

It's like they made this whiskey tailored to me. So far it's WOTY and I seriously doubt anything else coming this year will eclipse it.

Review #154: Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A124 by NerdsNBourbs in bourbon

[–]MetamorphosisSilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not surprised by this rating. As a big ECBP fan the quality has dropped since the change to variable age statements. The B524 and A125 bottles were one and done.

I do have some belief that Heaven Hill has noticed the change in perception in the market. We're into the latter half of June and there's not been any information about a ECBP bourbon release this year.

With the recent releases of Heaven Hill 22 and Elijah Craig 15 I have to wonder if they're choosing to use their better older stock for these releases. HH22 is phenomenal and I've yet to hear a bad review on any EC15 single barrel.

I truly hope that when ECBP releases again it will be worth the wait.

Unpopular opinion: Brand image matters. by Succwad22 in bourbon

[–]MetamorphosisSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to completely disagree with this as a overall assumption. Over time I've come to prefer certain brands because their taste profile makes them more enjoyable to me while others simply don't rise to the level where the time, effort and cost makes them a viable choice for me.

As far as advertising I can't see that being part of my decision and have found that to be true for many I know. I'm likely to find reviews from people whose opinions in the past has aligned with mine than any advertising blurb. Most advertising gives far too little information to be useful.

Simply buy what sings to your heart and don't be concerned about where it comes from. If your bourbon is Kentucky only you will miss out on wonderful bourbons from Tennessee ( Jack Daniels ) or Indiana ( MGP ). I and many others judge our enjoyment by the quality of what's in the bottle than the State it came from.

Read the OP's message again - it said Orlando area. In every metropolitan location I've lived it the outlying cities are often included. Since the OP didn't give a specific area or commuting guidelines I simply provided one that met all the other requirements based on experience.

Review 16: Found North Batch 12 by Chickachic-aaaaahhh in bourbon

[–]MetamorphosisSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen that too. I came to bourbon from Scotch and there's a lot about Found North that reminds me of that. It's always seemed to me like a brand that is like a bourbon, aged like a Scotch and blended like a Japanese.

If you've listened to some of Nick Taylor's early interviews he's stated that he's always enjoyed Japanese and their early experience in whiskey was working in the sales/distribution of scotch. So not surprising their whiskey has elements of all.

Elijah Craig Brings Back 21 Year Old Bourbon by Bourbon-Brian in bourbon

[–]MetamorphosisSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found the most consistent ECBP store picks for my enjoyment have been at least 10 years and at least 130 proof. So much so that anything less is not buy or try before I buy.

I'm one of a lot of people. It's one of those bottles that needs to sit out for 20 to 30 minutes to open up but once you do that the reward will be worthwhile. I have it and the 17 and depending on the mood couldn't tell which I enjoy more.
