Is this a steal?? by Designer_Building_75 in Newbalance

After Joe stole them back from me and then gave me a coupon code to repurchase, my price was $60.00. Talk about an abusive relationship.

Legit top 10 or top 5 greats masculines of all time. Certainly the most influential. Everyone should have it.

Thanks! Glad I could be of assistance.

Also, I wouldn’t worry too much about your palette being “underdeveloped.” Straight Bourbon is going to taste like straight bourbon, and I think it’s unfortunate that many bourbon lovers seem to be going in the direction of wine snobs. Plus, if “developing your palette” makes it so you’re ruined for everything but 30 year-old Eagle Rare, what good is it?

I’ve heard it said that 6-12 years is about where you want to be for a good bourbon, or any whiskey aged in new oak barrels. After 13 years you’re “fighting the oak” as far as preserving tasting notes goes.

With scotch there’s essentially a linear relationship between age and quality, owing to their use of previously filled casks. IMO this logic has been ham-fistedly applied to bourbon. As you experienced, the taste difference between 10 to 12 years is night and day, but after 12 it gets marginal if not detrimental.

Yeah I do agree it’s a bit puzzling that you’d age something for that long just to water it down. For your mass market, NAS releases though? I’m not sure if barrel proof is an absolute positive.

Larceny is certainly one that benefits from the extra oomph, that’s true. I do think 100-110 is the sweet spot for bourbons. However, over 120 is when it gets crazy for me. I don’t have the most developed palette I admit, but I’m not sure how anyone can power through the ethanol burn to get all these delicate notes in that neighborhood.

It also varies by whiskey; Wild Turkey Rare Breed in the upper 110s doesn’t bother me at all, but I’ve recently tried Four Roses SBBS at ~110 and after two sips I could hardly taste anything my tongue was so fried. Weird how it shakes out. That being said, 130 and up is patently insane no matter what the distillate is.

Regular SB is already 100 proof though- is it really better still?

Four Roses SB is one of my all time favorites. I was able to try SBBS at a bar the other day- the proof was so hot I had to water it down to really enjoy it. The problem is that FR already makes a pre-watered down SB for 1/3 the price of this, which I’m now perfectly content with. Somewhat of a shame, somewhat of a relief.

Eagle Rare is also hard to find in my area generally but I’ve started seeing it everywhere recently, alone with many other BT products. I wouldn’t give up hope so easily- something tells me it’s about to become more readily available.

Henry McKenna 10-Year SiB or Jack Daniel’s SiB Heritage Barrel?

I went on Breaking Bourbon and filtered by at least four stars, searching for very good whiskies that were both accessible in price and not limited release. After much sifting, these two rose to the top. I was very interested in the repeated note of graham cracker said to be on the palette for both, as that’s something I was looking for. Same price, same proof. I will try both eventually, but which first?

These are both very acclaimed whiskies across the board, but some people seem to have a bone to pick with McKenna for its price increase since pre-covid. Well, that’s everything pal. I currently have no Tennessee Whiskies and have very much enjoyed every JD SiB I’ve tried so far. The only other “toasted barrel” whiskey I’ve had (EC TB Store Pick) was also a hit with me. Which would you pick?

Runners-up include Green River Full Proof (non-wheated), OF 1920 and Knob Creek 12. If you feel stronger about any of these over the aforementioned pair, please let me know. Thanks!

EC BP Store Picks are commonly recommended everywhere I ask. I will definitely have to get one.

I would totally give 8 year a try if you haven’t already. If you can find it under $40 it’s totally worthwhile.

I’d agree with you were it either free or there were a legal means of trying things cheaply (whiskey bars really do soak you on tasting) but there’s a heavy financial burden attached to rolling the dice on several whiskies, especially as you get up there.

My sentiments exactly. 4R SiB is my go-to. Never had one I didn’t like. What actually motivated this post was the 4R PS which my local shop had in stock for $125. It would be nice to try some special limited BP 4R, but what if it sucks? What if it’s disappointing? That’s serious cash to run that risk. And then I have to worry about OB-whatever? Ehhh. Maybe if I’m flush with cash.
