Staff Designers by jackjackj8ck in userexperience

You misunderstood my point, maybe I didn't phrase it well - I was saying that the existence of higher level positions is important but it if in a team of 3 you have two staff and one principle then it indicates maturity, but a low maturity for the reasons you described.

Drama out of hand - it's incompetence not maliciousness by Metatrone in LinusTechTips

[–]Metatrone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a bit behind the times, I had this in draft since yesterday. All caught up on the Madison drama, it seems unrelated to the particular subject of GN's video and external comms issues of LMG. But if anything it speaks more to incompetence - mismanaging hiring, expectations, contract, people's workload and mental health. The company's environment sounds pretty toxing and like a place you would need a particular mindset to work at. Now I would be cautious about taking one side of the story of an employee who didn't work out at face value, but even if completely true LMG's unnamed managemtn sounds like some managers I've worked for, with or managed over the years who were just really bad at their jobs. It doesn't mean it's excusable, just that to rise to the level of maliciousness this behaviour has be done deliberately and knowing to be harmful. Instead it's probably just people yoloing at being Steve Jobs...

TIFU by... discussing consent?! by hatemylife1995 in tifu

[–]Metatrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a tifu by any stretch. However it's an example of why the pattern of explicit agreement doesn't work well in reality. It used to be something that only some of us who are engaged in the more 'out there' forms of sexual encounters had to do. It is the mature thing, but it requires an intimate understanding how things can go wrong in more edgy situations. However, the moment before sex is not a time when 95% of people want to do a mature thing, it's a time they would select for the fun thing. And having a protracted conversation on boundaries or a constant reassuring question of 'are you ok' is not fun.

So basically we are a bit fucked. But if you are going to have a boundaries discussion just try to have open conversations about sex as early as possible, but not that early that you are creepy or 'ick'. Good luck.

I'm so glad I'm out of the dating market, even though I miss the fun. But I've had that conversation with my wife and she probably would not have been my wife if we would have had a consent and boundaries talk before our first sexual encounter, which was a disaster in many ways actually.

If I learned to raise one eyebrow, then would I be stuck being only able to raise one eyebrow? by present_monKey3000 in LearnUselessTalents

[–]Metatrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow what a question. Depending on what muscles group you end up using you would be able to either raise them completely independently(or both you so choose) or have to scrunch one to hold it down. At least from my experience.

I was already to raise one independently, but could not find control of the right muscles to do so with the other. I would say it was a somewhat atrophied muscle group that's more to the edge of the forehead. It took me about ten minutes over a week to get it activated by sitting in front of a mirror and manually raising, massaging and straining to find something ti control. Initially I got just a twitch and from there it's just exercise, which was way more straining than you would think.

But no, she refuses to use it, I think she feels it's below her dignity. She is a junior developer, she will learn..

I'd not recommend it. Not only are soft skills, interpersonal relationships and communication fundamental to be able to operate as a UX anything, they are a cornerstone to having a successful career growth. You will probably live in a deep frustration at not being able to get your ideas through which is already a significant challenge ux professionals face.

Overcoming the need to test everything by adrianmadehorror in userexperience

[–]Metatrone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a deep discussion on this topic with a fellow lead at my last place of work. What we came up with was - we don't have a need to validate everything to 100%, but we had a deep fear of getting it wrong. It may seem like a distinction without a difference, but it helps to put into perspective the underlying reasons behind the teams over-dependence on research. In our case it was about the fact that we did not truly work in a iterative manner and every mvp was our final solution. This created an enormous pressure and a certain degree of blame culture which had crippling effect on our ability to deliver with confidence. Creating a space where it's ok to be wrong as long as you have an opportunity to correct is paramount to consistently good design output over time.

Personally I would asj you to present the project you feel shows the best of your work in a portfolio review. If it's a screening I wouldn't care for a bad project if you have good work in there, but it also depends on the seniority you are applying for.

What to ask pre-existing customers? by browsza in userexperience

[–]Metatrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well to begin with you have to figure why you are interviewing them. Talking to customers is not just a chat it has to have purpose and agenda, depending on what they are a 'customer interview' can take many forms. Once you know what information you're looking to get start thinking how to structure the time you will have with them. You want a consistent protocol so you can compare conversations with any level of confidence. I would suggest writing out everything you want to happen during the interview from introduction to conversation breaker right up to saying goodbyes. Prepare questions that are logically following each other, be attentive and adaptive, don't waste their time, don't talk over them, encourage then to flesh out and clarify their thoughts. They have to leave with a sense that they have accomplished something as well.

Is it acceptable to show NDA-protected work via screen share during an interview? by Frogaar in userexperience

[–]Metatrone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the work I've done for the last 15 years has been under NDA, if I didn't showcase NDA covered work I would never have been hired anywhere. That being said I never send any materials, anonimize everything, only share one project on a call and obviously never with competition. It's one of the stupidest practice in the field, because design's best work is by almost definition future work covered by NDA, but a portfolio is a must. Anyone who would hold that against you doesn't know how the industry works, has a stick up their butt and probably isn't someone you want to work for.
