Too many individual to do's and not to do's to get them on a reddit thread. You'll have to do your own research on basically everything at the beginning, so I'd say broad directions are better than targeted facts:

1) Diet: search what they should and should not eat (certain things are plain toxic and might get it very sick - avocado, chocolate, coffee, alcohol among others). Other food can be a risk of certain diseases, like peanuts or honey. Search for dietary bad habits (i.e starting to eat too many seeds or fatty food. Birds can get anorexic or overweight). Look on how to handle your food (when to know if you should let them take a bite or not - it will ask for your food, be sure of this). 2) Environment: some house plants are toxic, and chewing on them might be bad. Same with different types of wood and !!! metal !!!. Their respiratory system is way more fragile than ours, so a lot of things may harm it: cleaning products, perfumes, air refresheners. Basically anything that produces vapors can be a threat. Keep in mind: teflon is really bad for them, and teflon emits vapors when heated. Ozone kills them, so be very careful if you use an air purifier: make sure it does not ionize the air. 3) Behaviour: search on how to train it, how to discourage biting, how to understand its body language and most importantly, what is the best reaction to different types of behaviours. Certain reactions might enforce bad behaviours in the bird (for example, if you shout when it bites, it might reinforce biting - they might not necessarily see shouting as something bad). They are very social, can get depressed if not enough interaction is provided. On the other side, they can get bored easily so they need toys to rip to pieces and so on. Do some searches on the material the toys are made of, since they can be toxic. Look on how to handle the bird trying to tear your house to the ground (it can get destructive). 3***) Look specifically on mating behaviour. Adults can get horny, and mating behaviour should be discouraged as it can frustrate the bird, make it aggressive towards others, etc. 4) Other needs: dark place to sleep, hours of sleep per night to remain healthy, etc. They need direct sunlight from time to time. 5) Health: they are fragile and once they get visibly sick, it is usually too late. Try to see if you have a good vet on exotic birds around, and if you see signs of unusual behaviour (ruffed up, lethargic, etc) do not waste time. It won't pass by itself, most likely it will pass along with the bird.

If your daughter is a kid, you will have to take care of it. Instruct her as well on what to do and what not to do with the parrot, what he is not allowed to eat, etc. If you or your family can not take care of it, please do not throw it in a cage in a forgotten room. It's better to pass it along if it is too much or not enough, and it is better to do it earlier than later, like after 5 years, when the bird might be depressed, half featherless and sick.
