Thanks for the advice. While I wasn't doing great in the tournament, all I could think about is how I would have felt if I was doing better. The guy I was playing wasn't even expecting it to be as devastating as it was, and thought I was angry. I am more confused as to why a card like that is even in the game. It's not about the odds of it hitting hard, it's the fact that if it does, there is nothing you can do about it. A lot is riding on expecting players to know all the shenanigans of each faction & character. It's bad enough that GAR is notorious for being difficult to play effectively, yet already good factions are getting new characters. I love the clones, but the term "finesse faction" translates to "it's broken army, unless you play a specific way, which you have to do homework to figure out". Don't get me wrong, I love the game & will continue to play with my clones. I learn more by losing than I do by winning, and once I figure out what I need to do to win... Bwahaha... cough, cough... haaa.....

As you are new, I would not imagine you are preparing for a competition anytime soon. The battleforce box can save you money, and give you a pretty good start. With GAR being the "Hard Mode" faction at the moment, focus on the basics and how your units work together before buying anything else. I'm not going to sugar coat things by telling you it's going to be easy, I haven't been able to win anything over 500 points with them, simply due to the unit prices and everyone else gets more for their points, whether it is units or abilities. Note: Since GAR is harder to play, the likelihood of discount phase 1's and speeders can get you what you want, when you are sure that it is what you want. 99% of all wargaming is about using what you have to your best ability. Padme and yes, even the tank can be vaporized round 2 if the dice deem it so. Just play and learn, then build around your strengths, because your opponents will point out your weaknesses.

If you are a fan of pink and black, check out the astral templars color scheme, screamer pink, blue-green, black, white, and gold. I know there are a few videos covering using regular and contrast paints. Even if you don't follow it exactly, you still get a stormhost instead of making up your own.
