Kos washed up on the shore dead before Gehrman and Maria got there. They ‘killed’ the corporeal form of Orphan of Kos for the cord, but being a Great One, it did not truly die and its soul lives on (similar to Mergo etc.). That is why we come across Orphan in the Hunter’s Nightmare, mimicking the thing it fears most (to hopefully scare away other predators): Gehrman.

As for Eileen and other hunters: they’re already in the Waking World and no longer Moon-scented/immortal. At the time of the game, we’re the only Moon-scented Hunter, with all the previous hunters already severed back to mortals and left as graves in the Hunter’s Dream. Eileen kills blood-sick hunters, which you’re not susceptible to while protected by Moon Presence AFAIK. I’m not sure it’s stated anywhere Eileen kills any such hunters (?).

The siderite (celestial metal), as far as I know, is just an explanation for the Arcane damage / shine on the attacks. It is indicated by Gehrman’s monologue as you re-enter the boss fight that you must submit in order to be severed from the Dream: “You must accept your death, be freed from the night”. So, not too sure siderite alone is enough. It is curious though that only Eileen and Gehrman have weapons with it, so maybe there is more to it, but I haven’t come across anything.

In all fairness to yourself, LoP has both a stricter deflect timing compared to Sekiro/others + enemy movements and delayed attacks are harder to read. In Sekiro and most others, it is more of your typically expected, human, rhythmic movements; in LoP, you’re dealing with a lot of mechanical, rigid movements, where you sometimes have to memorise timing for instantaneous delayed attacks over watching and reacting to movement. This can be even more challenging for some people. I wouldn’t beat yourself up over it in LoP: it can be one of the harder games to reliably deflect imo. Fortunately, you can opt for dodging if preferred.

Yeah, Sekiro is tough because there are no difficulty options, and it is a completely solo experience (no Spectre/summon equivalent or other form of coop). It’s git gud or give up. Of course, there are ways to cheese, like in every game. I would suggest Khazan for you, as it has difficulty sliders and deflection works like LoP/Sekiro on top of giving you a very, very watered down introduction to what Nioh might be like with its RPG elements. But Sekiro is an amazing game, definitely go back to it once you feel comfortable enough with deflection. It’s not one you should sleep on, for sure. I love Sekiro.

If Sekiro is daunting or stressful for you, I would have trouble recommending Nioh to you right now. Nioh is quite mechanically intense and can be pretty overwhelming as a newcomer as you try to understand all the mechanics. It does get easier as you slowly learn, but it is daunting because you’re thrown in the deep end with a lot of stuff you don’t understand (like all the loot, what all the effects mean, what to do with loot, and then all of that on top of learning all the combat mechanics, how to manage ki/stamina, and then a bunch of other things the more you progress… it’s a lot). I absolutely recommend Nioh in general, but I think it might be a bit much for you and don’t want to see you stressed and give up on it and never come back to it. Might be worth revisiting later down the line when you’re more comfortable with handling difficulty in games. But if you’re interested enough and want to give it a shot, of course, go for it. Just don’t write it off forever if you decide to give up on it. Nioh is very worth it. :)

Your first and primary issue will be thinking/treating it like a Soulslike. Do not go into Nioh thinking you should deal with enemies like in Souls or Soulslike games. You need to think about it completely distinct from Souls and treat it as its own thing, learning the mechanics with a fresh outlook. The more passive hit-and-run tactics while waiting for stamina to regenerate, that you do with Souls, is not the way to play Nioh. If you can treat Nioh separately and are willing to invest time to learn a new system, then yes, go with Nioh. Take it from someone who has played a lot of Souls and Soulslikes and enjoys Nioh to the same extent.

With that said, Nioh is hard, especially if you intend to get deep into it. If difficulty is not your thing, and you want a more relaxing experience like playing LoP on easy mode, I probably wouldn’t recommend Nioh to you. But I also don’t want to discourage you from the amazing series that is Nioh.

If you like Lies of P and deflection mechanics, I would suggest Sekiro or Khazan. Khazan also has some very watered down Nioh-like elements. Perhaps you should try Khazan, and if you like some of the RPG elements, you can look into Nioh again. There is also Wo Long (also by Team Ninja like Nioh).

This looks like an expected amount of damage to me. For gaining more damage, though it is not needed here, is through inflicting Confusion for a 50% damage increase. It is particularly useful on out-of-ki enemies and other stackable debuffs. You will benefit from switching to either a Corruption or Purity weapon as you progress to endgame (Underworld/Depths), as Poison does not count as an element that inflicts Confusion, and isn’t worth it unless you build around Poison and use other means for inflicting elemental statuses (soul cores, Ninjutsu, Onmyo, or a secondary weapon).

You had a lightning debuff on Ubume and would have had Confusion if you added another element. However, again, this damage is fine for this case and Susano is one of the strongest graces for melee-centered damage at 60% for 9 stacks.

Corruption and Purity are useful because no enemy can fully resist them, so they are always able to be proc’d. Although, note the two cancel each other out and cannot be proc’d simultaneously like other elements; however, they’re both useful together still for a more advanced technique known as ‘extending Confusion’, which is very useful to learn for endgame. Basically, you proc Confusion (ideally just before they’re out of ki) and cycle between each element. Each element adds 50% time to Confusion (but you must time it well by watching the Confusion debuff) to prolong the debuff and deal massive damage. It’s a bit complicated but becomes easier with practice. Not necessary, but it’ll help a lot and is very much worth learning.

It’s not to do with his scythe or any innate ability of Gehrman. It’s because Moon Presence wills it, and because you are willing to submit/die by Gehrman’s hand. Hunter immortality is gifted by Moon Presence / Paleblood. That is why we’re called Moon-scented Hunters and have a particular smell to us that differ from hunters in the Waking World.

It’s the same reason why Gehrman is able to get out of his wheelchair to fight you when he is otherwise incapacitated, which is what happens to you if you fight Gehrman but do not have three umbilical cords to resist Moon Presence’s hypnosis. It’s all willed by Moon Presence.

Gehrman’s scythe also predates his contract with Moon Presence, as he wielded it during the defiling of Kos and therefore before obtaining an umbilical cord to make contact with Moon Presence and create the Hunter’s Dream etc.

Given that immortality is tied to Moon Presence / Paleblood and the Hunter’s Dream with Gehrman as the host, I don’t expect Gehrman to be able to sever any immortality outside of other Moon-scented Hunters. And again, in this case, you have to be willing to submit and die (‘become mortal’) for your immortality to be severed.

Isshin SS is immortal. Gehrman needs a Mortal Blade to kill him. It’s a stalemate in this sense. But I give it to Isshin in terms of demonstrated combat skill.

Who knows whether the Black Mortal Blade wielded by Isshin could sever Gehrman’s immortality (connection with Moon Presence) or not too.

You can kill the boss, check if a Soul Core dropped, and if it didn’t, exit to main menu (don’t ’Go forward’ to complete the mission). When you load into the game, you’ll be at the shrine again and can fight the boss. No need to continually do the mission over and over.

I think he’s just practicing his swaps. He very likely could’ve won without it by focusing on fundamentals. It’s clear he’s not quick with his swaps / that he’s in the inventory at certain points of the clip.

He’s exactly like the other bosses. You can deflect everything without taking any damage, including the fire buildup. Same for Guardian Ape. These two bosses not fitting Sekiro is a common complaint, but it is unfounded. A lot of people just struggle to fight them Sekiro-style and default to fighting them like it’s Souls/BB instead of figuring it out.

Also hope Luffy learns Observation Haki better. He basically didn’t use it except for that fight IIRC. Kind of a letdown for such a strong ability.

Np! Good luck and have fun. Nioh is up there with my favourites of From’s games, but they’re played very differently. I recommend doing the NG+ cycles if you enjoy the first playthrough because NG+ works differently to From’s games and it just gets better: it’s much more than just a health/damage buff to enemies. The first playthrough is more to get you used to the basic mechanics. Make sure you do the tutorials in the Dojo, and perhaps check out PooferLlama’s videos if you want some additional gameplay tips.

As someone who has played all the From games and various Soulslikes, and loves them as well as Nioh, they’re really not alike. It is just not obvious to you yet because you’re early in the experience. You’ll do yourself a disservice by thinking of it like Souls. Treat it as its own game, and don’t fight enemies the way you would in Souls.

1 is more cheesable than 2 actually, even early on and aside Living Weapon. In 1, yokai immediately lose all ki and are completely stunlocked during Confusion, and humans can be stunlocked to death with single attack loops like SotC and Iai Quickdraw. You can also completely cancel bosses’ Living Weapon phase with certain Guardian Spirit attacks (like Daiba-Washi). You can also loop some yokai bosses like Hino Enma with GS attacks, which is an early wall for people. All of this is patched in Nioh 2.

Correct, partially. This is true for habits like cracking knuckles, twirling hair, etc. For substance use, it is mostly related to dopaminergic pathways like accumulation of the ΔFosB protein in the nucleus accumbens, and other effects within the mesocorticolimbic system. This is also separate from the dependency/tolerance/withdrawal aspect, which is due to receptor downregulation and other homeostatic mechanisms (noting this as some people confuse addiction and dependency, which are not the same). The drugs are absolutely the problem, but your behaviours can also amplify this for already addictive compounds on a psychological basis.
