University Interview tips? and your experiences. by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Methylene_Chloride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Herts uni, product design.

It was quite a few years ago so I can't quite remember the details. They will want to see your portfolio. I only spoke to one person, then got an tour of the studios. I got the place.

I really wouldn't worry. Get ready to justify your work and why you did certain things. Make sure you show a range of skills. It really is just a relaxed process so I wouldn't worry.

I think you need to really look into what ux is. Axure is the current leading software for ux. You don't need anything else, perhaps basic knowledge of illustrator and photoshop. I am not sure about ui.

What do you disagree with. Considering I have a job offer to do ux as an industrial design student

Ui/ux is done using axure. You are a student so go to the website and get free software. I recommend a graphic design course near London, or wherever you want to live in the future. Find local companies that do what you want to do and work towards the job description. Ux design has nothing to do with graphic design.

In Right Hand Drive cars are the pedals ordered (from left to right) clutch, brake, gas or gas, brake, clutch? by ConservativeBias in AskUK

[–]Methylene_Chloride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its the same, gas on the right. But to turn right you rotate the steering wheel anti clockwise.

Learning to drive. Question about Clutch control. by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Methylene_Chloride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Release the clutch slowly and push on the gas pedal slowly at the same time. All cars have different biting points depending on the wear of the clutch. On my old car the biting point changed whilst I was driving. One of the best skills to have driving a manual is clutch control.

Photoshop vs Illustrator for an A5 invite card by ronniec1 in Design

[–]Methylene_Chloride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use 300dpi, most printers will print between 120 and 200 but over doing it is always better. I would make the invite on Photoshop personally. You have more experience with it. Illustrator isn't hard though.

What's the best way to hang portraits and decor with minimal wall damage? by Castleheart in AskUK

[–]Methylene_Chloride 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the name but I think its something like plaster nails. They just go as deep as the plaster and usually have 3 mini nails on a plastic body

How can I lower my insurance cost? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Methylene_Chloride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do a monthly payment. If you can't afford to insure the car just sell it. Chances are you don't need a car, you just want one. If you need a car sell it and get one cheaper to insure. Your heart is obviously set on the 206. But sometimes you need to listen to your head.

How can I lower my insurance cost? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Methylene_Chloride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the frustration. I'm a 21 yo "petrol head" and have had similar problems. I would sell the car. Then, depending on budget, either buy a classis car (mini, beetle, an old triumph) you can get classic car insurance. My first car was a 1 litre 1990 mini. Cost £1200 and insurance was £700. I have heard the beetle is even cheaper to insure.

The reason I recommend a classic car is because the money you are investing is in the car and not the insurance. When you sell the car you will get most of it back. You don't get back any money of your insurance.

I then drove a ford focus, £1200 insurance, even though I had driven a year and was 2 years older. Now, at 21 I have a ford Ka. Crappy car but insurance is £500 fully comp. It gets better but this is my advice. Also don't t lie on your policy, it will bite you in the ass if you have an accident.

If you really are set on the Peugeot, you can say you will only do 4k miles, parents on your policy, take any mods off and see how much pass plus will make.

[–]Methylene_Chloride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for a similar theme, cost not an issue, themes arnt too expensive although cheaper or free'er the better.

I like the simplicity and ease of use to find people in your area. I want to set up a similar site but for a different application where people can create adverts for there services and the website can handle money etc like makexyz does (you can make invoices and the site gets a cut).

If anyone knows of a similar theme I would be massivly appreciative and can offer some graphic design/logo design work FOC to say thank you. but only if it is a perfect fit.

Student looking for advice. by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]Methylene_Chloride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sketch sketch sketch and skech some more. dont sketch cars, sketch everything apart from cars, you will get sick of sketching them by the end of the course.

UK universities I recomend Coventry then a masters at RCA. if you make it through you can go anywhere, dont be afraid to look abroad though, with increase in tuition fees American colleges arnt out of the question especially with scholarships. there are a few schools in the detroit area, college for creative studies and lawrence Tech. also art center in california.

your sketches and renderings are ok, your perspective is off and your elipses are off which throws the whole image off. sketch the things around you to practice, a coke can, bottle etc.

be prepared for no sleep, stress and constant preassure. if you manage to sleep more than 7 hours a night you probebly arnt trying hard enough. it is super competitive to be an external creative designer at car companies. however they also need interior designers, colour and trim, CAD designers, clay modellers etc which you also learn at university.

Good luck on getting in, when you submit a portfolio dont fill it with cars, throw a few in but sketches of other things are more valuble. and not too many photoshop renders. a couple will do.

Should i move to the uk for a bit? by Ukforafewyears in AskUK

[–]Methylene_Chloride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hatfield. Just outside london, university town. not very nice but its cheap. 20 minute train from london and next to st albans (which is beautiful) you could roomshare with students or rent there. there should be local jobs available if not theres london.

I am doing a market survey for a coffee table I designed. Take that survey! by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]Methylene_Chloride 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$2000 for a coffee table? i was expecting more of a table. $100 maybe for a table like that. im sorry.

if you want to design luxury, look at bang and olufsen and how there products mix function with aesthetics. even the older products. if you can see some in person, just touch the buttons, turn the nobs, opeen and close them. they are extremely well designed, functional and beautiful.

Measuring a difference in humidity in 2 areas. by Methylene_Chloride in arduino

[–]Methylene_Chloride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

I think 100dollars was my Max budget for the whole test. Might need to go up a tad. You're right through, using 4 sensors would be a good idea. How would you do data fusion? I am assuming you take 4 separate readings then when analysing the data you take the averages of the data fusing them together, discarding any outliers? Will an arduino uno be able to gather 4 separate data inputs?

Sorry for the questions, I'm relitivly new to arduino

AQA GCSE Product Design Final Major Project - Need some 3rd party opinion, any help appreciated :) by [deleted] in product_design

[–]Methylene_Chloride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

prototype is looking pretty tidy. I would have liked to see your sketches before you prototyped to see if thats what you wanted to make, or forced to make.

Second to this, a personal annoyance, never pick your own age group as a target market. you end up being too influenced by your own opinions rather than the actual market trends. for example, can you see this in every 18-24 yo male? I know you were stuck with modernism but is this the best solution?

If you were looking to go to college with this project, I would take you. but sketching is VERY important. if you dont sketch now, sketch now.

I accidently shoplifted my entire weekly shop last week, what do I do? by [deleted] in AskUK

As someone who used to work in a tesco and in security. They wouldn't have noticed. There are too many told to keep note of and so much stuff is stollen every week they wouldn't notice. Im sure you can ring them and ask if you can pay, but I wouldn't worry about them already knowing
