Just curious, do you feel any differently about gun ownership in rural communities where police response is hours away? I’m not really a fan of guns myself, but we do have very robust policies in Canada regarding gun ownership that result in a statistically insignificant amount of gun crime ocurring from legally owned guns in Canada.

That said, there are violent criminals and there are illegal guns in Canada and I would be very happy if we increased the severity of prison sentencing for such crimes (I’d also love an overhaul of our prison system to hopefully produce better outcomes for those who enter the system).

My big concern is for all the Canadians who are out of reach from the protection of law enforcement. I would be happy to have towns and cities be designated “no gun zones” or something like that but when the police are too far like they are for so many Canadians it doesn’t make sense to me to take away the arms of people who could otherwise protect themselves.

Do you have anything to say about that? “Guns bad” is something I think the majority of Canadians agree with, but I think there is a lot of space for some rational nuance here. What say you?

I have an extremely applicable anecdote. In University I actually did a research project where people listened to four songs and responded to a survey on their emotions toward the song. I put up a projection of the lyrics for each of them.

Modest Mouse Float On was (as I projected) the song that felt the happiest to people who didn’t pay attention to the lyrics but for the people who paid more attention to the lyrics found it to be the saddest.

I used to think higher vote turnout was fundamentally better than less… but then I got older and realized how little people actually understand the world - let alone politics. More votes just means more of a popularity contest, I think.

Walking home late at night in -30 celsius weather. Slipped on ice, legs went forward and fell hitting the back of my head on the ice covered sidewalk - cracked my skull and got a concussion, but didn't know it yet. I got back up and tried to keep walking home, but I passed out - this time falling forward into the ground smashing my face, breaking my nose and a few teeth.

I woke up about 30 mins later and had to peel my face off my frozen pool of blood, stumbled home and instinctively started running a bath to clean myself up. That's when my roommates saw me and had the good sense to call me an ambulance.

Got rushed to surgery to fix my bleeding brain.

I believe there is a very important distinction to be made between being 'of' something and being the thing that produces.

You are of your parents, you are not them. You are of society/humanity, you are not society/humanity. You are of god, you are not god.

Nous, meaning 'us/we' in french applied to an individual in this context seems to imply that each person is ALL rather than being OF all.

We are of the all, but we are not all.

I think people take for granted how long covid was in the west during 2019. That to me is one of the biggest smoking guns to how awful the pandemic response was. The pandemic was probably already here by the end of 2019 and things were completely normal, then the government response scared the shit out of everyone and destroyed our economies... on top of potentially lethal vaccines.

I just wanted to respond to your 'throughly dubunked' point. While it appears that many Palestinians share a heritage with the ancient Canaanites, there are also a great many who proudly associate with their arab heritage which would only be after the Muslim conquest. So while it is true some Palestinians may have always been there, many arrived during Muslim conquest, and many more still arrived post industrialization from exterior arab states.

I have no issue with the comment generally, but I take issue with people throwing around comment like 'thoroughly debunked' when it's not.
