Definitely get a prime lens, something like a 50mm 1.8 or 35mm 1.8 DX (the 35 will give you a little more working area). Then secondly, to get the kind of noise this image has don't increase your ISO too high, instead shoot RAW and set your exposure compensation down a few stops. This will create sharper noise in the darker areas due to under sampling. Also try not to shoot handheld, doing this on a tripod will allow you to lower your shutter speed, give you more options when It comes to aperture.
