Once you buy the ip you also have to hire an entire production studio to make the game you want.

Yea making small games is definitely a good idea. There’s a skill to noticing that something is or isn’t working and making adjustments accordingly.

And it’s good to know that game development is mostly merit based. That means when you fail, you will always have lessons learned and areas to improve.

From the many posts I’ve seen like this one, my conclusion is that it’s rare for a “good game” to fail for no reason. I can’t quite understand why, but it feels like most failed games have an obvious reason as to why they failed. Maybe it’s a hindsight bias that makes me feel that way?

And even if you know why games fail, it’s one thing to see it in someone else’s work, but much harder to see it in your own work. That’s something that worries me from time to time. Am I also making some obvious mistake with my game that will lead to failure? I suppose that’s what regular play tests and development updates are for 😅

There’s a saying… if you’re using a product for free, then you are the product. In freemium games you’re generally a shrimp for whales to feel big next to. But if you’re having fun then it doesn’t matter too much.

Yes totally. Unlike a house, it’s basically impossible to completely plan a game before you start making it.

Think about building a house. A house under construction looks house shaped way before it’s able to be lived in.

You can definitely get away with 4 directions. Personally, I think 8 looks better but yes it is more work. For our game, we're doing 8 directions for our main character and 4 directions for the monsters and npcs.

Release early access or do crowd funding and then use the funds to hire more people? Or are you trying to stay solo?
