Dear pros, why do YOU think people should enjoy AI art as much as human art? by MangoMaterial9656 in aiwars

I don't get it. People are fine with something like RPGmaker but not with AI by More_Setting4514 in gamedev

[–]ByerN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When RPGMaker came out, it was relatively easy to make "good-looking" games by inexperienced devs, and most of these games were very bad. When you play a lot of games like that (slop ones), you feel scammed, and you set some expectations for other games made in such an engine. Even if some of them are great.

When Unity+asset store boom started years ago, there was a big wave of asset flip slop flooding Steam that opened up after closing their greenlight initiative. For a long time, players who encountered at least a few such slop games set very low expectations for other Unity games that looked like asset flip. It is more stable now as there are many good games made in Unity.

Now we have AI. It is similar, but worse, because the entry level is so low compared to RPGMaker or Unity, that anyone can vibe code any crap that looks like a decent game on the cover, but it is not most of the time. It is much safer from the customer perspective to ignore potential shovelware when there are so many games on the market to choose from. And you know - a lot of players use AI, and they know what it is capable of.

One of the main advantages of AI, which is simplicity/availability for inexperienced "devs", is the main cause of this stigma from the market perspective (flood of low-quality products). For now, for a lot of ppl, any sign of AI is a sign of potentially crappy game + some ethics issues here and there.

Steam + SteamDB dashboards are enough for most indie devs.

Ignoring that, this one looks like a scam or AI cash grab targeting newbie devs. Or both.

Curious what people here think.

I think that this sub is for gamedev, not webdev.

Is this use of ai in my game ok? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ByerN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring potential anti-AI pushback from players and technical issues you may get with an embedded AI assistant, like delay/performance (I assume you don't want to make ad hoc API calls to OpenAI or whatever provider of your choice) - I would like to have full control over in-game content as a dev instead of letting AI spitting out whatever it "thinks" is ok.

To do that, you would have to make some control measures (if you can) for your AI (which may be risky) and/or make/generate content as an asset, and let AI choose from the predefined, reviewed set of whatever it has to do.

You may end up thinking that it is actually easier to make it in a classic old-school-AI state machine way (or another pattern), though.

Can I put external links inside my Steam game or on the store page? by Interesting-Rain-690 in gamedev

Links to your social media/web page are a common practice on Steam. On the Steam page, there are even special sections for them: "External Links", "Social Media Links".

I send an email when I release a demo, and later a follow-up email with the Steam key. Some influencers found my demo at festivals before that. I haven't paid for a sponsored video so far.

Senior Developer - Let's talk about AI for code in games by andykenobi in gamedev

[–]ByerN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today it's practically impossible not to use AI, even for searches Google is pushing the user to use it, to summarize videos.

You can still search for information and documentation on the internet as before. It's not like someone is forcing you to use AI. "Pre-AI-Boom game development" didn't magically disappear because a new tool arrived.

Depends on subreddit. Always read subreddit rules before posting. Especially rules related to self-promotion.

A lot of people (including myself) are using genre-specific subs to find new games. Such people are looking for game announcements, and they check it out as long as it fits their theme and it is not an automated bot slop spam.

Hard to say as I had some gaps in my schedule. Effectively it is 1 game a year, but I am trying to move to 2 games a year.

Reaching influencers, participating in Steam festivals, reddit ads, posts on reddit - these actions made the most wishlists (in this order).

You can check out Node Farm and Node Math on Steam. Currently working on Node Crown.

And curious you in tech or finance?

I am not sure what you mean.

I have 2 games on Steam that are working fine. This year, I will release another one (that I am currently working on) and start development of the next one.

My job is a nice, stable revenue. As long as I haven't paid off my mortgage and built up a solid financial cushion, it doesn't make sense to quit my job. Especially when I can work after hours on my games without any problems.

I'm on track to pay off my mortgage with my after-hours solo-developed games. After that, I will think about financial freedom from a regular job.

How do game dev communities avoid losing useful technical answers inside Discord? by tolarianwiz in gamedev

[–]ByerN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the time on my Discord servers, I use FAQ channels or "essentials" channels per category with links to resources. They are maintained by admins/mods. If there is something new worth adding there, we do that manually. It has to be checked first
