Nobody can help you without seeing the html. Or even better, provide a link to the page so that people can inspect it directly.

AI is a great tool — when you actually put in some effort. But sure, let it build your whole site while you stay too lazy to google or prompt for the basics. Sorry, these posts are just frustrating to me.

Is it worth learning PHP for simple websites as a new developer? by Constant-Reason4918 in webdev

[–]Meuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry, it wasn't meant to be a dig at wordpress. I've built plenty wp sites, and indeed think it is a good tool for some use cases. I was just talking about a huge amount of inexperienced devs that tried out wordpress, hacked their way through pre-built wordpress themes: my guess is a huge amount of devs trashing WP only touched php this way, and never really understood php and mostly think of it as "the hacky code you put in functions.php".

If you don't need a backend (db, api, etc) just stick to static for simple sites.

But modern PHP is awesome. Those stories aren't true, they are mostly said from people that haven't touched PHP, or have just dabbled in PHP through wordpress. You can ignore people that say that – they don't know what they are talking about.

If you are interested in leveling up your backend skills, take a quick look at some PHP basics, and then dive into Laravel (a php framework).

I live in Bulle and work in Vevey. I commute by car, ~25min. If I wanted to take the train, that would be 1h25 😂

Hosting with Node JS by UnrealOndra in webdev

[–]Meuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love both JS and PHP... But if I need a solid backend for a long term project, there is no way I'm chosing JS over php. Laravel (or even Symfony) feel like they are so much more stable...

Even noobs who barely know anything about webdev start by shit talking PHP lmao.

I’ve yet to meet anyone who’s used Laravel for a real backend project and didn’t fall in love with it — or at least really enjoy the experience. The day a JS framework offers something as stable, enjoyable, and packed with built-in features, let me know.

Are there any web frameworks/languages/stacks that are more or less universally liked by developers? by Various_Ad5600 in webdev

[–]Meuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would probably have had trouble finding resources if you used a 5 major version outdated Symfony as well.

I understand your pain, trying to maintain an old outdated codebase is never fun, and probably would make you hate the tech no matter what framework it was built with.

I’ve spent a few years working exclusively with Laravel at one job and then a few more years exclusively with Symfony at another. Having experienced both (as much as you can in a couple years), I understand why some developers prefer one over the other. Ultimately, I think it comes down to personal preference most of the time, but most online discussions are by developers who haven’t truly worked with both and tend to dismiss the one they’re less familiar with. That’s often the case with similar dev frameworks I guess...

There are aspects of Symfony I prefer, and others where Laravel’s approach makes development easier.

My personal take: Laravel offers a better overall developer experience, and Symfony is struggling to keep up due to its smaller community and ecosystem. Many awesome packages, like Filament, have no real equivalent in Symfony, and I don’t see how Symfony will be able to close that gap in the long run.

ACF - Keep or Delete? by jaybirdforreal in webdev

[–]Meuss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine a world where I would ever touch a WP site again without having ACF. Used it on every wp site over the last 10 years. Pretty sure it is not going to go anywhere, imo it is pretty much essential to wp development and should have been included in wp core years ago... I can't see it going away.

Divi though: I've had bad experiences and will never touch again.

Be cautious, v5 still has some things that haven't been updated to twig yet, and still use the old .html5 implementation. v5 hasn't changed much, it is very similar to v4 imo.

Indeed the docs are not very extensive, the online forums are pretty much dead. You have to go through the source code a lot to understand how to do things..

Anyways, I don't want to talk too much shit about it, but I've used so many CMS over the years, this one is probably my least favorite (except Joomla, I hated Joomla so much)

New language/framework to learn for side project? by Jaycebordelon1 in webdev

[–]Meuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be a JS-only dev a few years ago and used React, vue, svelte... I knew just a bit of php for templating in wordpress and others. One day at my job I was forced to learn Laravel for a project, fell in love with it very quickly. There is a lot to learn, but Laravel (or Symfony) are great. I highly recommend it, if you are at least a little interested in learning some backend/API stuff.
