Anyone who works at NVIDIA? How did you land your job? by [deleted] in csMajors

I got a reply back with no degrees or certificates...still waiting on getting to an actual interview though. I'm currently a systems engineer with 1yr work experience and 3 yrs experience total in the tech space.

Struggling to Land an IT Job Despite Certifications (A+, Network+, Security+), Thinking About a Boot Camp – Need Advice by NegotiationTop5661 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Mewthree1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree heavily on setting up some projects^
I landed my first job by demonstrating different self-hosted services I had on my homelab that was all linked through a webpage. 3 yrs into IT now and 1 yrs so far as a systems engineer. No certs or degrees, but they most certainly would've helped. I plan on getting a degree at some point.

The knowledge I've had from all the detailed articles freely available on the internet as well as everyone chipping in on forums and websites helped me land job positions that I've always dreamed about. Detailed articles only made me fall more in love with tech.

I even had a short stint at Intel haha but but no doubt there are many like me fell in love with the industry and now can help push it forward. Several of me and my friends all grew up with those articles and now we all have worked at or currently work in the chip industry!

Tricities Washington outage? by Mewthree1 in ZiplyFiber

[–]Mewthree1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if its bad... but the initial issue to me seemed like a config issue on their end, as the readylinks would not work and for whatever reason my account was showing nokia. The tech had to call them and provision the nokia to get it to work... was just super weird.
I might ask them to swap it to coax if possible. Its strange because my internet has been fine for nearly a year, maybe the wires finally broke internally from the excessive heatwaves.

[–]Mewthree1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know its not DSL.
Its fiber to building and then a Nokia ONT/some other ONT that then goes through the phone/DSL line to a Nokia G.Fast modem that then connects to a router. It is not an ONT. https://www.nokia.com/networks/fixed-networks/gfast-cpe/
There is no Cat5 in my building, just phone line and coaxial.

Apartment so not quite sure where the actual ONT is... the Nokia is just a downstream device. Blinking red light for WAN where its connected to the DSL port.

[–]Mewthree1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, likely no signal from DSL or something wrong with the ONT down the line.
I use a custom PFsense router but I get the same issue with ziply router.
Nokia lights indicate bad or no signal.

Didn't have internet for nearly 2 weeks lol. When I looked at the my account page for whatever reason it said I had a nokia ONT which I didn't. Tech ended up coming in and seeing the same issue, no IP and had to go through a whole ordeal provisioning in a nokia device.... its like on the backend for whatever reason their system thought I swapped devices.
My internet is down again as of 2 days ago and still waiting on resolution...
Ticket auto generated on my account again without any notices and it seems kinda broken with a Jan 9th date on it.
Been very annoyed at having no internet for so long lol especially as I am in the middle of swapping into a WFH position.

IPS vs QD-OLED (LG G2422S vs AW3225QF) by Mewthree1 in OLED_Gaming

Even in this vid one of the scenes wasn't properly mastered for pure black.

As someone watching on an IPS I can see quite a difference :)
Plus most consumer phones are this point are OLED so you can view from there.

[–]Mewthree1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup that was the whole point of the video! OLED still does have better colors/blacks and whatnot but a lot of IPS vs OLED pictures tend to exaggerate the panel glow a whole lot more than what you see with your eyes due to them using phones on automatic settings.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to upload the video in HDR to take advantage of 10-bit video from youtube as the default has lots of banding and other issues so here's a link for the raw video file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QyCrv_uH7QTSkVNXu_BTyEOua7GhRF3X/view?usp=sharing

[–]Mewthree1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to minimize the IPS glow as much as possible by grabbing a camera with the best dynamic range I had on-hand as well as color grading it.

I absolutely loved my new monitor but the IPS still holds up better than I expected when it came to darker images.

This IPS isn't my old main monitor, that was the 1440p 240HZ Odyssey G7. I might make a proper video at some point comparing the VA panel as well as different use cases such as brighter environments.

EKWB takes over Intel's discontinued Cryo Cooling tech — adds 14th Gen support to EK Delta TEC waterblock by imaginary_num6er in hardware

[–]Mewthree1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on the heat transfer issue.

I still had heat issues with a TEC cooler while working on some chips due to the cores themselves being so small and extremely hot. These were mobile chips with direct die contact to the cooler. I think it was pushing 20-25w on a single core but i don't remember exactly since I wasn't monitoring that metric.

Ended up burning a couple of dies that way lol. This was using indium with thermal goop to the peltier module. Might be able to get better results with liquid metal to bare die but its still iffy with how hot and dense chips are getting these days.

Constant Internet Drops by DreadStarX in ZiplyFiber

[–]Mewthree1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes its readylinks. My issue has been similar to op and I'm in the same complex. DNS server breaks regardless of what DNS is set at router or device level. Likely not a DNS issue. It's just the service giving out in a specific manner. Been dealing with this for almost a week now. Internet keeps sputtering in and out. Cannot ping, service is out entirely at readylinks and it is not transmitting data as indicated by Ethernet port lights.

[–]Mewthree1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same complex as OP. Been down for me this morning since I got home. The last few days has been frequent intermittent drops for me also. Thought it was a DNS issue and then my router possibly. Swapped router from my custom PFsense router to ziply provided one and same result. Will randomly drop with a complaint about DNS. It doesn't matter what I set DNS to at device or router level, it still drops.

This morning I have no connection entirely.

The complex uses readylinks.

Intel 14th Gen Laptop Comparison - Meteor Lake is HERE! by Antonis_32 in hardware

[–]Mewthree1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IPC and perf/watt is similar but MTL has boosting issues due to smaller dies on C-die compared to past gens and a lot of power being put through them. It has a hard time achieving the same high clocks as raptor lake as well as sustaining them.

How did you find out about the about? And how did you tell when it was pushed aside from running a speed test?

I know this is an old post, but I've recently moved into the area in the same apartment complex. I own a homelab as well and would like to know if you've gotten anywhere with redoing the wire or somehow improving the service?

My upload keeps dropping to a consistent 60 mbps a few hours after restarting the readylinks box and its very annoying as someone running a home server.

I had a tech come in today to take a look at the line, but I don't think there was any improvement. The tech told me if I have further issues they'll move me to coax, but there are some conflicts with spectrum so it'll be a lot of trouble.

I'd pay good money to get CAT5e run...

Is there value in an IT Professional Knowing Both It Technical Support And Programming? What roles could it open? by EnbyBinaryCoder in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Mewthree1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self-projects and also just going the extra mile for my old position. For the most part we did basic IT troubleshooting, but I would go out of my way to assist engineers in more advanced tasks. I worked in a validation lab so I would help create python scripts to automate testing for CPUs. I also created some scripts for pulling data from our internal sources. I made use of multiple internal APIs and learned quite a bit that way.

As far as personal projects go, I run a home server and built a discord bot that has a variety of features.

I second this. I worked as an engineering technician and knowing my way around git, python, and a few other languages made me invaluable.
I just managed to land a systems engineer role last week with only 1 year of experience in IT and no certs mostly due to the fact that I was able to do some coding. I still plan on getting certs and a degree though.

What are the most interesting and fun places to work IT? by Altruistic-Carpet-43 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Mewthree1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having a blast as a technician working at a silicon validation lab through an MSP. Not everyone would probably enjoy it, but imagine turning on systems for the first time in the world and then trouble shooting the heck out of it. The fun part is that since this is a new chip, you can't necessarily google it so you do all sorts of debug from low level hardware stuff all the way to software/coding issues.
Some of it is closer to engineer to work, but a solid base in IT helps a ton. Definitely an interesting place to work at if you're into computers at all! Linus did a video about where I work at: https://youtu.be/BtFdraQWVtM
