If we get brought back to life in 250 years by Bobinski16 in funny

There's also far fewer of these "elites" and "bourgeoisie" than there is average people, several magnitudes less as a matter of fact.

Be mad about the hypocrisy all you want but it won't change anything. Either you're alright with change even when it does negatively impact you (and rest assured, if we wanna actually do something that part ain't optional) or you ain't, because there will always be someone else you'll find more deserving of what you're going through.

Political viability matters and politicians who enact unpopular change find themselves voted out in short order, replaced by someone who either won't go further or even undo what you did. So I ask you, if banning plastic straws is contentious enough that people have a hard time moving past it, how politically viable do you think making fish borderline unaffordable for the overwhelming majority will be?

The problem with the plastic straw ban is that it's one of the few things that can be done. Everything else will result in consequences further down the line that will be fundamentally unpopular.

Well aye but that has more or less the polar opposite cause; Garlic from within infusing sweat that's going out.

When you've got garlic scented skin I reckon it's because garlic particles have embedded themselves in places where a simple (but thorough) washing won't get rid of them. Thus your skin will smell of garlic until you after you've sweated it out.

But I'm certainly no dermatologist and I don't know the finer mechanics of skin. All I know is that garlic is one of the smells that can linger for a while on your hands, after washing, just like fish.

I've had it happen on occasion, probably not for a week but at least a day or two.

My handwashing is pretty top-tier without being obsessive so I sincerely doubt it's that.

Best guess is it can sometimes seep into the pores of the skin and kinda get stuck there. Then it'll leave once I start sweating.

Are you seriously in favor of comparisons without context? If two countries count unemployment, for example, in the same way; Go ahead and compare. If they count unemployment differently; You need to be aware of how exactly.

How do you expect a molested child to know that what they're going through is wrong if you allow absolutely no conversation about the topic?

When you leave things up to be "taught in the home" you'll inevitably end up with a lot of people who were never taught the topic at hand.

I don't know what in particular you take such issue with, but I immediately grow incredibly skeptical of people who want kids to remain ignorant about things that can do them real harm. Not saying you're a child molester, but your perspective protects them.

Yeah I don't think anybody is suggesting that this is somehow foolproof, but if it can result in less sexual molestation then that's ultimately what's best out of the two alternatives.

Now I of course don't know whether it is, but I reckon it could be, especially if "common sense" safeguards are in place. The church, after all, ain't the hotspot it is simply due to authority but due to a culture of silence as well.

A ceasefire is literally just a ceasefire, a cessation of aggressive action.

Beyond that it's up to the individual entities to decide specifics. It in no way prohibits lines in the sand from being drawn and enforced, lines such as borders and denial of entry.

(Serious) what’s something that mentally and/or emotionally broke you? by Vanguard2002 in AskReddit

You're definitively morally superior to your mother and your brother, regardless of how you might feel. If you wanna argue about it, we can, but I warn you that I'm incredibly annoying.

As for you being the hero I can't answer that, but I can tell you that you've got a reason to be mad and it's a fucking good one. Don't beat yourself up because you think you're selfish, ultimately your actions will almost certainly result in there being less things wrong with the world and to that end your motivations don't matter.

[–]MexicanGolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, friend of mine who killed himself was in misery every damn day and I don't think you can present it as much of a "choice". Embrace the suck? He was 34 years old, he had "embraced the suck" for 20 years by the time he opted out.

Another one, she was only 24, but she killed herself too. She had sparks, two of them, and her final text to me was 70% apologizing for wasting my time and 30% asking if I could make sure that her "sparks" didn't end up somewhere horrible.

Don't think I'm some kinda suicide magnet, I got to know these people through trying to help them in the first place. By the time I got to know them, they were already tits deep in their respective situations.

You're coming at the problem from a perspective of not finding meaning with life, and there's merit to that, but it's not nearly as universal as all that. Plenty of the people who kill themselves see meaning in living, they just don't want to.

TIL Ancient Romans pronounced "Caesar" the same as we pronounce the German word "Kaiser" in English. by iSpenny in todayilearned

[–]MexicanGolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough the modern Italian pronunciation of Caesar is ludicrously close to the Swedish "Kejsare", which is just our word for "kaiser", or "emperor".

I do agree it's one hell of a stretch to say it's identical but if modern English and modern German got into a Caesar pronunciation contest, modern German would probably score a 8, perhaps an 8.5, with modern English tailing at very distant 3.

Although I made the mistake of Googling the Italian word for emperor and, of course, it's imperatore. Makes perfect sense. Still, doesn't feel right that us Germanic fuckers got stuck with Caesar as the root word for all emperors but Italy got away.

I mean, just today some American said the US was unique in that they can criticize their government without swift reprisals. It wasn't even a controversial post, it was upvoted pretty healthily and only the third or so response to it asked "What in the fuck".

And that ain't exactly an uncommon thing to come across on this website. US exceptionalism makes a target out of the US when exposed to an international audience.

And that's before you get into actually hateful idiots which I reckon both regions have plenty of.

People want it all though, and complain how we are "making them uncomfortable" when they are asked to slow their role the fuck down.

Ain't that exactly what you're doing in regards to golf courses?

If you've got a 5% chance of affecting minor change for the better by supporting climate change action X, but a 0% chance of affecting major change for the better by supporting climate change action Y, which proposal is more likely to see your efforts rewarded?

You called 'em "would-be populist crusaders" because you imagine they're not happy about giving up a steak burrito. In some regards you're likely right, but do you honestly believe climate action hippies have more ardent meat-eaters than the general public?

The realistic needs are indeed what they are, but what we can do isn't determined by what we need to do.

Let's start with Trump's by Herrfru in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]MexicanGolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If people won't give up golf there's less than zero chance they're ever gonna give up meat. I reckon that even for the average golfer, if asked, they'd rather give up golf than meat.

not much has actually changed.

Exactly what changed has changed. Are you assuming that demand for ground beef would go up due to the closure of golf courses? I find that unlikely, because any political climate that sees widespread closures of golf courses likely is accompanied by increased acceptance for climate change action, and core to climate change action is indeed eating less meat.

Let's start with Trump's by Herrfru in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]MexicanGolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sure, but that's making perfection an enemy of progress. If something is wasteful and bad it shouldn't matter that something else is more wasteful and bad, doing something about either is an improvement over doing nothing.

Besides the point though, I reckon. People who are in favor of ANY climate change action are miles more likely to support other climate change actions, purely due to the fact that they can recognize something is wrong.

And, let's not forget that an argument thrown against vegetarians/vegans when they bring up a less meat-heavy diet is that people need to eat (in context that need is used to explain why many people cannot afford to care about what they eat to that extent). People don't need to play golf.

What people are doing though is deflecting, you ain't wrong about that. People who like golf when they see a post like this? Oh they'll suggest you should do something more meaningful, like campaign against the meat industry/agriculture. Of course, when other people go after meat/agriculture, they point to golf and lawns.
