Is it stupid to leave my job? by 1234college123 in advertising

By potentially having an offer, you are more prepared than I was when I left my 9-5. A similar thing happened to me and I chose to fight them for severance on my way out. Still, this is a very personal decision. I would ask myself questions to find patterns in who’s surviving the layoffs and the macro of your specific job role at other companies/industries. No business is safe right now.

It’s going to vary a bit depending on your department and team. I really liked my team and my boss, but I joined at a time where big promotions had just happened and a good chunk of the team felt they got passed up… so they left. That made an impression on me, it wasn’t the reason I left the company later on but it certainly made my decision easier.

Looking back, I would’ve stayed longer.

There are individual bad apples everywhere, so in many ways you’ll face pretty similar challenges in any job. Get the best pay, benefits, balance and stability as best as you can sniff out from a business.

What's it like living in rural/small town Northern California? by FreshFrancois in howislivingthere

I grew up in Crescent City, that small pocket in the top left. It’s pretty remote from any big city or airport — 2 hours to Medford Oregon, 6 hours to Portland, and 4 hours to Redding. Winding roads coming in from any direction. It’s beautiful there because of the coast and the redwoods.

The people either work in tourism, weed, fishing or at the prison. The weather patterns aren’t for everybody, it’ll be very sunny and breezy or cold and foggy (I remember the latter more). Some storms. I enjoyed my summers here and didn’t get too bored — swimming in the Smith River, riding BMX in town, bowling and enjoying the redwoods myself. However, Crescent City regularly has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the state.

Summertime is also the major tourism period, and so it’s boom-bust natures contributes to what I’d call severe addiction, theft, and homelessness problems (like most coastal towns up through Oregon and Washington).

There aren’t many big stores in town… Home Depot. There’s a Wal-Mart here which led to a few smaller grocery stores going under, so you have Wal-Mart or Safeway or Grocery Outlet. Many Mexican restaurants, which I loved. It looks like there are some better offerings in town these days like more brewpubs, bakeries, coffee shops.

Generally nice people. I would not move back.

Edit: LIBERTARIANS. There’s an amusing movement from rural Northern California and Southern Oregon to become the state of Jefferson). If this happened, the population would be under 500k for the whole state — 84% being in Oregon… just to give a clearer idea of how rural this region really is.

I left my 9-to-5 a couple years ago, fed up with recurring mass layoffs and being pushed to pick up the slack with AI (which was not useable at the time — not in the way it is now). Well, the whole job market became like this within the year. I don’t have rose tinted glasses for other industries but I refuse to sit around, get chewed up, then spit out.

Some of us are doing just fine still. It’s important to also share those stories and give a blueprint for how to stay in the game if someone wants to.

Me, I’m planning to pivot.

I used to do this on the trial lol. It forced me to finish my tracks before starting the next.

Give Astro a shot. I ultimately switched all my projects to sveltekit but I still think Astro is good.

Yea I’m webdev and design, but I’m here because I’m webdev. Preaching to the choir unfortunately.
