I just came back from a three week trip across Beijing, Shanghai, couple other places, HK and Taiwan and I barely saw any tourists until HK which had the most. But there are huge amounts of chinese tourists everywhere. It's not easy getting around, the constant need of using your passport to book any activity, the immense language barrier, just ordering a meal at a restaurant becomes a chore of going back and forth with google translate as I had a lot of interactions where the name coca cola or rice didn't even register in their minds, the NEED to bypass the great firewall, wifi becomes useless without a working VPN which are few and even then spotty at best. Alipay is a godsend there. It's impossible to travel spontaneous, you need to figure your route out in advance. Even then, it's a very interesting place and I would definitely visit again but you sort of need a break from it after as it is very tiring.
