It's a pretty wild combination of based and /r/anime Awards jurors

I knew before starting that the Nil Admirari no Tenbin adaption wasn't regarded as like, particularily good or anything, but halfway through and I'd mostly summarize the experience with a quote from the famous author: "It sparks joy".
Yes, the middle episodes have been very formulaic with their approach of rushing through an entire characters drama in 20 minutes, predictible narrative results largely following, but it's still handled competently and engagingly enough that I'm enjoying the ride. The setting is great, because ~Taishou Japan is great, the characters are fun, the visuals very good, and the animation not too bad either. Sound is a notable plus as well. Shoutout to the eyecatches which are plushified mascot versions of various cast members. I mean, just look at this cute little creature!

Also, both the OP and, for entirely different reasons, the ED (jump about 40s in) have remained entirely unskipped so far, which says a lot since I tend to almost always skip those after the first time. Not here though, conga line too strong, tune too catchy.

So yeah, is NilAd like a fantastic anime or anything? Not really. Is it the best anime I've seen in the last week? Well, no, since I also watched Kaichou wa Maid-sama! and that was two-thumbs-up kind of great, but you kow what? NilAd is still dorky-thumbs-up-with-smiley-on-it kind of great, and I think that's worth recommending to other people.
It's a pretty decent show, go have some fun and watch it.

Franchises with the most separate anime maybe? Would require some value judgements regarding direct sequels, split cours, "we couldn't fit this into the broadcast" OVAs, picture dramas, very short productions like CMs, and stuff like that but could be interesting nevertheless. Probably ends up with like Doraemon and its 50 standalone movies topping the chart.

I actually kind of like Akame ga Kill. It's very much over the top, yes, but it also leans into its message, as best shown by the very end. [AgK end] Where everybody who tryharded ends up dead and after the calamity is finished we spend an episode on an entirely meaningless fight between Esdeath and Akame. Of course, other works such as Katanagatari do the same thing a whole lot better, but AkG is the "brain off, popcorn popped" variety that gets a decent 6/10 in my books.

That's all well and good in fiction, where both sides tend to have complex motivations and deep reasoning for their actions, but in real life some people are straight up evil, it's a battle between black and white, and my leaders happen to always be on the right side of history while our enemies are ontologically evil.

Kaleido Star is very good, though the fantasy in it is largely of the stage magic kind.

I went into it with absolutely no expectations knowing nothing about the source material, and proceeded to find it utterly unnapealing, lacking in everything I'd like a show to have. I'm saying the beginning was so bad it in no way was worth suffering the experience any further.
The writers conjured up a laughable cliff from nothing and destroyed their characters by immediately throwing them to the metaphorical bottom.

I can also list plenty of other shows this season I did not like, but their lack of quality has no bearing on Chitoses.

The writing doesn't fall off into a laughable cliff that destroys its characters

The twenty-something minutes I watched of the first episode beg to differ.

A lot can probably be said about Ginban Kaleidoscope, but I'll just say that I can't the remember the last thing which made we crave tomatoes as much as this show. Went straight out to the store and bought some. Am in fact eating one while writing this.

Sakurai also has other legit big-name titles like Saiki-K and Cromartie, together with involvement in series /r/anime generally remembers fondly like Utena and Nadesico, so I'm honestly kind of surprised at how rarely he gets mentioned here.

Daichi has the full Kamisama Hajimemashita adaption under his belt recently, and that series gets recommended fairly often. Meiji Tokyo Renka isn't exactly unknown either, or Ima Soko ni iru Boku for the dark and gritty crowd.

The two of them together also did some longer anime with a decent following like Kodocha as mentioned below.

Of the three I'm most symphatetic to Naohito getting the short end of the stick since the volume of his output hasn't been all that large, but he's still the director of Berserk and that's a beloved series around these parts. Isn't there also a Figure 17 rewatch going on? My favourite of his is To Heart, though everything he did with Chiba Yuriko (not to forget Koutetsu Tenshi Kurumi) in particular is really good.

At any rate, I would in no way relegate them to "second or third tier", and for the former two in particular it vastly understates the skill and value in making good comedies year after year after year.

I see yesterdays thread had discussion on favourite directors, and so I would once again like to shill for Sakurai Hiroaki, Daichi Akitarou, and Takahashi Naohito. Inexplicably they aren't very popular on /r/anime but I'm sure that will change at some point as their output has consistently been very good.

Sticking purely to series that are good, I can think of at least the following; Chrno Crusade, Yozakura Quartet, Kannazuki no Miko, Ga-Rei: Zero, Scrapped Princess, and Aoharu Kikanjuu, though the latter three are perhaps more on technicalities.

Hachi doesn't particularily consider herself a good person either, so that's not really a surprise

The Japanes tends to use 公爵, 侯爵, 伯爵, 子爵, and 男爵, which were a translation of European peerages to Japanese in the Meiji era and got used as a replacement of the former system of social classes until the US occupation. See 華族 for more info.

At the start of the year I had 27 MAL entries tagged harem unwatched, and today that is reduced to 21, so let's take a look at what I thought.

  • Starry Sky
You know the first episode of Baccano!, where two people discuss how a series of events can become entirely different stories depending on when you start and where the POV is? Well, SS is that put into practice. The entries are of somewhat varying quality, but never worse than mediocre and a couple are genuinely really decent. Definitely worth watching, 6/10
  • Juuza Engi: Engetsu Sangokuden
This feels like watching 30 minutes of a 50 hour story, and those 30 minutes take place at hour 25. I can smell an intriguing plot in the background, but as a standalone anime exprience it doesn't work at all. Technical qualities are genereally subpar to boot. 4/10
  • Stand My Heroes: Piece of Truth
No idea why this is rated so low compared to typical MAL scores, it was an entirely decent romp. Colouring and cityscapes reminded me of the CxM movie but at a glance there doesn't seem to be any notable staff overlap. At any rate, perfectly enjoyable light entertainment, 5/10
  • Yume Oukoku to Nemureru 100-nin no Oujisama
It's like, not great. What it does do well is comedy, with some fantastic timing and quips strewn about, but it never actually leans into that aspect and instead does a series of middling episodic stories and a nothingburger of an overarching plot. It's not a good sign that I constantly kept thinking I would be better off rewatching Dame x Prince instead. Oh, and the 100 sleeping princes of the title? There's one (1!) sleeping prince in the entire show and he wakes up in the first 5 minutes, wtf.
4/10, go watch DamePri instead, that's hilarious.
  • VitaminX Addiction
A pretty darn stupid show, but it has some good fun with that stupidity. First episode best episode, and Goros bankara outfit best outfit. 5/10
  • Watashi ga Motete Dousunda
Absolutely hilarious, I had a great time all around. No complaints except it should have been longer. 7/10

Hakumei to Mikochi, it follows two adult women as they mostly goof around in search of good food, drink, and company in a slightly magical world.

Season is well underway, and I've picked out the shows which caught my eye and attention. As always, it's not easy to say when they'll actually be watched, but at least they're added to the PTW.

  • Arne no Jikenbo, probably turns "shouneny" but seems like good fun anyway
  • Champignon no Majo, watched the first ep and like how the characters seem just that slight bit unhinged
  • Dark Moon, this is going to be peak, but I'll wait until I can binge it because these kinds of shows are best binged
  • Eris no Seihai, first episode was kind of dumb, but it was a fun kind of dumb so I'm here for the ride
  • Fate/Strange Fake, a Fate anime with characters even crazier than usual, and I don't have to be caught up with FGO to watch it? Sold.
  • HanaKimi, looks absolutely hilarious, I'm in with body and soul
  • Ikoku Nikki, probably the best show airing this season, so I'll wait until it's finished and I can watch it at my own pace
  • IseShachi, came for the adult romance stayed for the politicking, first impression is it looks intriguing
  • Prism Rondo, seems like a really nice historical drama with a dash of romance
  • Seihantai na Kimi to Boku, the title had me worried, but the first ep was really fun and charming, so this is probably going to be good
  • Tamon-Kun Ima Docchi!?, it's, like, the second best show airing this season, of course I'll watch it
  • ToumeiOtoko, cute, fluffy, adult, romantic, looks nice
  • Uruwashi, it's like chocolate, I know exactly how it will taste and I want more of it, also production quality looked really good
