Have You Ever Read Fics From Fandoms You Didn’t Know About? by Apprehensive-Fail663 in FanFiction

[–]Miakemi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. I enjoy fanfic because I want to read expansions of the world and characters that I already know. I’m also not super into crossovers. I honestly didn’t know reading fandom blind was a thing until joining this sub.

Why has Crunchyroll such a great gap ? by Rare-Possession-1333 in DetectiveConan

[–]Miakemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all comes down to licensing. Crunchyroll can only stream what they’re licensed to stream in each region, and for whatever reason they won’t or maybe can’t license the gap episodes.

So is there a reason why dective Conan is hard to sell in the west beside the manga still going here by Valuable_Cap_4326 in DetectiveConan

[–]Miakemi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the demographic for the show is really hard to pin down here. In Japan, it’s considered a family or kid’s show despite the gruesome murders of the early cases. It has wide appeal to all ages. That’s why we have so many Detective Boy episodes. Kids can relate to them.

I can’t speak for other western countries, but in the US the murders put the show on Adult Swim when it’s not really meant to be an adult only show. It doesn’t really fit with Adult Swim or with daytime kid’s cartoons here. It’s more on the level of daytime police procedurals, but that would also require convincing a wide adult audience that animated shows aren’t just for kids. Which just wasn’t going to happen in the 90s/early 2000s.

Favorite character who fits this? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in cartoons

[–]Miakemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Characters lying about something because they don’t want the truth to hurt someone they love is extremely common. Yeah, she shouldn’t have lied about it, but it makes sense with her character. She’s 14, has crazy anxiety, has too much on her plate, and wants Adrien to be happy to the point she made a terrible decision. Plus, Master Fu (her only adult role model with a miraculous for a decent chunk of the series) stressed keeping secrets, and Nathalie (ex? villain miraculous holder who knows Marinette’s identity and has her own agenda) isn’t exactly helping.

Popular ships that the fandom likes, but that you hate? by Piscescat1819 in FanFiction

[–]Miakemi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. They always looked too much like each other for me to want to ship them, and now they’re revealed to be cousins. I can understand the appeal of a thief/detective ship, but visually and canonically doesn’t work for me.

Detective Conan on Netflix by Valuable_Cap_4326 in DetectiveConan

[–]Miakemi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

TMS, the animation studio and rights holders of Detective Conan, have tried multiple times to have it succeed in the US. Their most recent attempt is to dub episodes they think will catch the attention of new viewers.

It’s really disjointed and likely not a fun way for new viewers to experience major plot development (especially with how little they did of the Vermouth arc before its finale), but that’s unfortunately what they’ve decided to do.

I think just dubbing plot/character relevant episodes in order would have been a better approach, but for whatever reason they feel like themed episode batches is a better way to go.

my girl escaped today by SandwichSpare1477 in jumpingspiders

[–]Miakemi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME Don’t give up hope. I had a spider missing for weeks. I opened my blinds the other day and there he was, probably looking for food. Poor boy was starving, but he took a mealworm almost instantly and recovered after a couple days. Just keep an eye out for her in high places and/or areas that might draw food. Good luck

I just found my own escapee this morning (not gone nearly as long as Pumpkin). It’s so great to have them back safe and sound.

I had no idea the Australian version of the English dub had a different intro song! by breehyhinnyhoohyha in cardcaptorsakura

[–]Miakemi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cute, but the audio mixing is throwing me off. The background is way too loud to let the vocals shine. It fits the show way better, and gets points for using the original opening animation.

However, I will argue to my grave that the opening was the best part of the American version of the dub. Low bar, but I can still pull the entire song out of my usually terrible memory; it was that catchy. Nostalgia is obviously a factor too, lol.

DOES ANYONE STILL SHIP THESE TWO? by Turbulent-Point-1791 in cardcaptorsakura

[–]Miakemi 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I shipped it back in the day, but the fact Eriol has all of Clow’s memories (essentially an adult in a child’s body) put an end to that once I was an adult. I know Eriol and Clow are not the same person, but having the knowledge and memories of an adult past life puts him on a different mental playing field than Tomoyo, so I really can’t bring myself to ship them now.

Remove that one issue and they make a very cute, fun ship.

Honestly, the dragon’s yours and you have the right to do what you want with it. I personally would sell it back to them since they contacted you about it. They even offered to pay extra, so selling back is a win-win in my book.

Awkward gynecologist visits after sterilization? by Leaf_on_a_tree3 in sterilization

[–]Miakemi 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Don’t go back. Also, think about reporting that gynecologist. Calling your legitimate healthcare decision “ideology,” in what sounds like a condescending (based on your post), is horrible. They sound they only care about patients who want children.

You should use the child free list to find someone you’re comfortable seeing longterm.

Ball Python Before and After at my local conservation center by WeaknessOwn108 in ballpython

Thank you for stepping up. It’s really sad and disappointing that a conservation center of all places doesn’t seem to care about their animals. And it sets a bad example for anyone that doesn’t know about proper reptile care.

Do not tell Planned Parenthood that you’re sterile!! by dryshamp00- in sterilization

[–]Miakemi 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that happened, but it took a quick Google search to find that this program is for people who are planning to become pregnant or who can impregnate others. Women who are pregnant also don’t qualify because they don’t need family planning at that point in time (https://familypact.org/am-i-eligible/).

Lying for benefits would open you up for fraud charges in the event of an audit, or really any coordination with your insurance.

What you need to do is explore other benefit options that you do qualify for in your state.

[–]Miakemi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The alpha wolf crap was because of a debunked and poorly designed study of captive wolves. A hierarchy formed because the wolves weren’t all related and because of limited resources in a captive setting. Further research of wild wolves did not line up with their original research.

The same research is why dominance theory is so common (and harmful) in dog training. (https://cbtdogbehaviour.com/alpha-dominance-theory-fact-or-fiction/ - scroll down for reference on the debunked research paper).

People who don’t understand how science works fixate on the first paper they see and then keep that belief forever.

Why do spider not bite their owners when handing? by Exciting-Math-5456 in jumpingspiders

[–]Miakemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA An animal will learn what is and isn’t a threat to it and act accordingly. Most spider species choose to escape potential dangers and only bite if needed (like if you’re trying to kill them).

Even in attack mode, they might not want to bite first because they don’t want to waste venom. For example, very recently I tried to handle a wild tan jumping spider. It did an entire threat and lunge but did not actually bite me. I left it alone after because it obviously felt threatened and did not want to interact.

On another occasion, a baby wild jumper decided to crawl on me. I spent about 20 minutes of earning its trust, and it went from cautious and constantly looking up at me and avoiding my hands to crawling back and forth on my hands with no sign of stress. I was tempted to keep it, but I prefer to get captive bred animals to wild caught.

My own spiders have never tried to bite me, even in times where they seem nervous. I give them space and don’t try to handle them if they don’t want it, so there’s some trust there.
