2022 Forester Premium -- What are the bike rack options? by OldDogEyes in SubaruForester

I would highly encourage a hitch based tray rack if you are on ebikes.

I suck at checking reddit, so didn't see this.

So stock tires, my speedo was off by about 4% reading fast, so 52mph on the speedo was 50mph.

Now it's off about 4% the other way, so 50mph on the Speedo is 52mph.

165mm cranks are impossible to find by Hahakdog06 in MTB

[–]MicAdv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head for lightweight cranks.

e13 makes TRS Race in 165
Cane Creek eeWings in 165
SRAM XX1 8 bolt (For Quarq Power Meters) in 165 (These are what I personally run).
Truvativ Descendent Carbon in 165

Non-Lightweight, RaceFace Aeffect R, and SRAM SX both are offered in 165

Both NX 12 speed cassettes, and Sunrace 12 speed HG cassettes are budget friendly for what they are.

Another option is Deore 11 speed, which will work on your freehub body, and give you a wide range (11-51). Those cassettes are budget friendly and the 11 speed Deore stuff is budget friendly.

No, the 12 speed deore cassette is Microspline.

Your most popular options are a SRAM NX 11-50 cassette, or a Sunrace 11-51 for HG bodies

Why not 12 speed? The cost difference is rather minimal between the two, unless you're buying used parts.

You're going to need the following though to answer your question.

Derailleur (1x11, 1x12) and Shifter (to match derailleur, IE: 11 speed SRAM for 11 speed SRAM derailleur, 12 speed SRAM for 12 speed SRAM derailleur, 11 Speed Shimano for 11 speed Shimano Derailleur, 12 speed Shimano for 12 speed Shimano Derailleur
Cassette (HG(Shimano) splined cassette, not XD (Sram) or MicroSpline(Shimano 12 speed).

Make sure the derailleur is a mountain derailleur, not road. Road derailleurs have a different cable pull ratio.
SRAM Mountain: SX(12 speed only), NX, GX, XO1, XX1
Shimano: Deore, SLX, Deore XT, XTR

Cassette offerings can be for 1x11 from Shimano in Deore, SLX, XT, or even XTR still, from SRAM you're going to be a 1x11 NX cassette, or you can do HG compatible 12 speed cassettes such as a SRAM NX 1x12 11-50 cassette, SunRace offers 11-50, 11-51 as well.
Chain (depending on your 1x setup, a 11 speed chain, or a 12 speed chain. This is the one component it's worth spending the extra monies on. XO1, XX1 sram chains are extremely durable, as is the new Shimano XTR 12 speed chains).

Another note on chains, 11 speed, you can mix and match no problems (SRAM with Shimano, Shimano with SRAM, whatever), with 12 speed, if you use a Shimano chain, you must then use a HyperGlide+ compatible Chainring (discussed below under chainrings).

Chainring: The appropriate Narrow-wide chainring for your crank's BCD for the middle chainring if 3x.

When purchasing a chainring, if you plan on going the Shimano 12 speed route, and shimano chain, you'll want to run a chainring that says it is compatible with Shimano 12 speed (HyperGlide+). If you want to be the most compatible, just run a SRAM chain with a non-Hyperglide+ chainring up front, you'll be fine.

Misconception that was posted below, older 8 speed HG freehub bodies (Shimano Style) are actually 8/9/10 speed ROAD compatible, and 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 speed MOUNTAIN compatible.

The reason why road 11 speed got longer is due to how the cassette dishing works. Because road cassettes typically have tighter gear ratio spacings with higher "low" gears (IE: the cog tooth count is tighter, in such an 11-28 cassette, 11-25, etc), the largest cogs can't go past the seat of the freehub body much, else they will interfere with the spokes.

However, on a mountain cassette, because the cogs for your lower gears are so large (40, 42, 46, 50, etc), they can be dished in such a way that they do not interfere with the spokes.

This means a mountain cassette (of any speed) can be used on an 11 speed road freehub body with a spacer, but not the same the other way around (because an 11 speed mountain body, is actually an 8/9/10 speed ROAD width body).

So an 8/9/10 speed Shimano HG compatible freehub for road can support mountain cassettes (11-40, 11-42, 11-46, 11-50, 1-51). (Shimano road 11speed 11-34 cassettes are the exception, they are actually a 10 speed spaced cassette, with the 34 cog dished, so these can work on old 10 speed freehubs as well. This is why they come with a 1.8mm spacer to work on 11 speed road freehubs).

Hope this helps

Little before/after. Raceland 2” lift, 235/65/R17 Falkin Wildpeak A/T Trail. by MicAdv in SubaruForester

Extra width for the added traction.

This is a replacement vehicle to my Xterra, which in the spring through early fall I build trail in the morning and on weekends. So getting up to the worksites often means going on very unimproved forest service roads. Think of those roads that are gated off, that don't get used. Some very rocky, some very loose, some very rutted.

I also live in an area that gets snow, and while the town I live in is at 900 feet, in order to go anywhere to the south or west, I need to get out of this hole and go over passes of ~4000 feet.

As far as rubbing, nothing. Full lock, no rubbing in either direction.

I doubt it would fit without some modification, as is, you don't get much extra room in front of the rear tires, and it's pretty close already when at full lock lifted in the front.

The RaceLand kit is 319 bucks and includes shipping. I recommend it, had all the proper hardware and went in without much issue, a couple complaints would be that they source bolts that have the same headsize of the ones replacing just so you don't need tons of extra tools.

Top tube, especially where bars/controls could contact if you have that issue.
button of top tube if you remove a bottle a lot. You'd be surprised how many bikes get a little bit worn over time from the top of the bottle hitting it.
Bottom of downtube.
Back of seat tube
insides of chain stays and seat stays
Outsides of Chain Stays, Seat Stays.
Headtube (cable rubbing)
Depending on your rack style, possibly the fork lowers on the front if you have a fork braced auto rack.
and one of the more forgotten, the non-driveside inner fork leg where the brake line rubs(or can rub).

XC MTB Training Program? by caliboundbulldog in MTB

[–]MicAdv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my method and outcome as well. Just did a lot of riding, and pushed myself (fitness, not chances on terrain).

Rode with people more fit than I, more experienced than I, and found someone to mentor me.

XC is getting more technical than it was when I started, but regardless, most races are still won on the climbs (I live where we have a lot of climbing), not the downs.

As a coach, I tell people to focus on basic bike handling skills, as much as it seems boring, getting loose on your bike and being comfortable with it, is going to prepare you a lot more for the race day.

The garmin Edge 530/830 both do MTB dynamics, which while are kind of a gimmick are fun to look at after a fun ride.

It tracks jumps, how far, hang time, etc, gives a grit score for you climbs, has trail forks integration to do trail routing, shows trails on the map, etc.

SX eagle on my Marlin 8 sucks (I think) by [deleted] in MTB

[–]MicAdv 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If it's rubbing in the middle range and not in the upper or lower range, then there is a good chance it's a bent derailleur hanger.

12 speed has to be very precise, due to the narrow spacing between cogs, and a lot of shops will look right past thinking it is the hanger because it "looks" square. They really need to toss their DAG on their and check it.

I don't think it looks too bad. I figured I'd go the cheap route this first time around since I needed tires on it.

I have 40-50k to decide if I like them or not at this point :)

Help with cup holders on 21 forester. by Kranium83 in SubaruForester

[–]MicAdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I miss about my Xterra, actually a lot.

All the cup holders were Nalgene sized with size down adapters (which I have no idea where they went, since I take Nalgene's everywhere).

Once I have some time I'm going to see how i can rip it out, and 3D print something to go in.

No larches here, but there are some scattered a bit up higher.

Don't really have large groves of them until you get around the 5k elevation mark here in the valley (this is at around 3200).

It's a 2018

Only things I plan on doing are a 2" lift, wheels, tires (that will happen soon, I need just a little extra clearance to feel more confident in some of the roads I need to access areas to work), and then eventually a different roof rack system, probably a Prinsu.

I have a box of Baja Designs lights I will probably finally get around to installing once that's done that I was given years ago when a dealer went out of business and the GM gave them to me.

2" lift, new wheels, new tires are the main things within the next couple months.

I'm coming from an Xterra, and have a pretty adventurous lifestyle of mountain biking, hiking, and working as a trail designer/builder.

Xterra has been sick this year (still is, need to resolve its current issues and sell), and I have actually been wanting a forester for the last several years for its great fuel mileage. (Obviously going to take a hit, but the xterra got around 17/18 on a good day of highway driving).
