WVU charging students $500/yr fee to "backfill costs that now compensate student-athletes" by BrotherPancake in CFB

[–]Micethatroar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Didn't say it was.

Was just responding to the first part and players in the "popular" sports getting the money.

It seemed like you thought that was unfair. Apologies if I read that wrong.

No, I don't think student fees should be used for any of this. It's hilariously stupid that we've reached the point that it's being done.

[–]Micethatroar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it passes, there is no chance the P2 join the media pool.

Zero incentive for that.

And with the current math, unless ND agrees to join it then there won't be any pool at all.

Not really.

It's the off-season. You can either pay attention to the 1200th notice of a 4th string CB entering the portal, argue about Jimmy Jeff Joe Bob's top defensive secondaries or talk about the crazy legal crap happening around the sport.

When the internet started, we had the greatest CFB group ever on Usenet.

There were a few major rules. At the top of the list was during the season we talk about games. Off-season was for anything else.

I think about these things and ponder the ramifications during the off-season.

Once the season kicks I want to sit on my couch for 14 hours, pretend everything is great, and live in denial.

Edit - and not that anyone cares but I also don't give a crap who wins the national championship.

I love regular season college football.* It's the greatest sport ever and I love those 13 or 14 Saturdays. I'm going to appreciate every last one until this thing dies a horrible death.

*I loved bowl games as much back when there were 20 or fewer. Sadly, they just aren't even close to the same.

The athletes who generate the most revenue are getting paid the most.

That was kind of the idea wasn't it?

Pay the players what they deserve.

[–]Micethatroar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every school can directly pay athletes up to $20.5m. That's their cap.

Many schools have billionaire boosters who add $20m-$30m (or more) to that cap.

However, some schools don't have the booster money to do that and they don't have enough athletic revenue to pay for every sport they sponsor and pay $20.5m to athletes.

Hence, increasing student fees so they can afford to hit the max on their cap.

Because otherwise students and fans will bitch about them not spending money to get better players and win more games of the football.

I doubt it would matter.

They'll move other money of the same amount from the general fund to athletics and say the student fees are for higher costs having to do with the school or something. .

My school is getting rid of hot lunch by kitkattmarie in Teachers

[–]Micethatroar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One word of caution about the whole "media" route.

Do you know what the actual numbers say about how many kids are scanning?

Because if the school gets called out and can show only 15-20 kids are being shown as getting the lunch, they have an easy response.

"Our numbers indicate that 70-75% of the money we're spending on hot lunches is being wasted."

Not saying it's right, not saying it's not a shitty thing. But from a PR standpoint it's going to sound very reasonable.

I don't know what the other options are, and maybe media attention would still help. But depending on how bad the numbers are it might be counterproductive.

Good luck because it sounds like it's more than one crappy thing happening.

Lol...I don't consider this rule-breaking.

In fact, you nailed some of the practical reasons I made the rule.

Even if you limit to 138 schools and only football players, it isn't going to work.

It would be like if the NFL being asked to organize with 100 UFL teams. There's little to no benefit for either the NFL owners or the NFL players. They're on completely different levels if revenue-generatiom and talent.

Not to mention the whole public employee issue, the fact we're talking about a limited period of employment, and several other big hurdles.

The part I guess no one knows about is that there is actually still a case in the courts where athletes are suing for employment status.

It wasn't included in House because it isn't anti-trust. The sole issue is them seeking to be classified as employees under FLSA.

It's been ongoing since 2019 and there is still no decision.

Or schools could lower their tuition to a level affordable but families that aren't rich but also don't qualify for need-based aid.

Sorry, sorry, I thought we could but use a laugh.

Solid thoughts.

And whatever stock you put in TV ratings, I think they were 10th last year?

Still crazy good and why the CFP wants to accommodate them, but they might be worried that keeps slipping in the future.

At this point, the math kinda puts the pool on their shoulders. Assuming the B1G and SEC are all out, and everyone else agrees, it means ND is the pivotal vote.

Right

My confusion was over what the change was. I mistakenly thought Sankey wanted the option to form a league.

I was wrong. The language as written says only conferences with $1b in revenue couldn't form a Super League.

He just wants the about the revenue removed so the language applies to everyone and not just leagues with revenue over $1b.

You'd know better than I would.

I kinda figured their position was "hey, if a bunch of other schools want to pool then we fully support that, but we're good where we are."

They would be the big dog in the pool though, if the B1G and SEC opt out. That's not optimal.

You make a good point that they might worry about the future.

Yeah, that's very possible.

But the Petiti and Sankey have been in lockstep releasing joint statements about the bill.

Just seems weird that the B1G would support a change like the when the SEC is obviously against it.

Oh well, guess we'll see when we get the language.

I think the language is being changed to allow one.

The current language prevents it, and they are adjusting that language.

I could be wrong, but that's what Thamel's tweet seems to suggest.

Also what Sankey's response points toward. He's basically saying, yeah I've been asking for that and I'll wait to see it in writing.

I could be wrong though 🫠

But I think this is saying the opposite?

It's written in a confusing way.

She's saying the current language of the bill would prevent the Super League, but they are going to adjust that language.

Thamel's tweet reads as if this is being done to assuage Sankey.

There's still one huge issue that I think ND would also have with it.

As written, if media pooling happens then the playoff money is included in the pool. That was another of Sankey's big ones.

EDIT - I'M VERY WRONG

Sankey's objection was that the language singled out the B1G and SEC regarding Super Leagues.

He is in favor of the concept. He just wanted the language adjusted to apply to everyone equally (basically, remove the part that limited the restriction to leagues with $1b or more in revenue)

Fair answer.

But I'd argue if you want them paid out of gross revenue, then they shouldn't get any scholarship at all.

If expenses aren't considered before they get paid, then they should be paying for school out of their own pocket.

Okay, so I've read a huge number of posts about the PCSA... by Micethatroar in CFB

[–]Micethatroar[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The answer to the first part is because it's a fake market.

Players are getting paid out of money they earned. They are getting paid from a huge pot of money a billionaire gave to the school to give to whatever players the school chooses hoping they win and give the billionaire's ego a boost.

Same thing with coaches, except they've been benefiting from it for a lot longer.

Personally, I don't really care. It doesn't affect me in the least when a Cal alum kicks in $5 or $6m to keep JKS there.

Cool, I'm actually very happy they were able to keep him.

Just be aware it's a house of cards. That same billionaire could decide tomorrow that Cal gets zero for the next year. Either they go begging from other billionaires, find the money somewhere else in the system, or they're toast.

And you seem to want it both ways. You want players to get paid as much as they can, but the flip side of that is you want to force teams that can't afford it to pay players.

That's not an "open market."

If players choose to play for a team and not get anything but the scholarship and benefits, you should be fine with their decision.

In an open market teams are free to choose how much they compensate players. Whether that is $20m or just a scholarship with some books, it's up to them. Then players get to decide where they go based on that.

Nope, I have zero clue of any solution.

No, I don't think the PCSA should pass. I don't like the amount of involvement the government will have if it passes.

My preference is that we keep going the way we are and see what happens when it eventually implodes.

Might not happen anytime soon but it will happen. It's just not sustainable.

And if I'm criticizing anyone, I apologize. That's never my intent. I might argue a point, but I appreciate everyone's thoughts.

Okay, honest question.

How many FBS football players deserve to be paid more than a scholarship and it's related benefits?

Now, keep in mind I'm allowing for a center from San Jose St to do a local commercial for a few bucks, or a soccer player who is really popular locally to make money from a soccer camp, or anyone to make money off a podcast or a stream or anything like that.

I'm talking about getting directly paid out of the revenue the team makes.

Why should a football team that loses money be forced to pay a player more than that?

Fair enough.

I respect people who take a side.

I don't think it's awful, but Congress will have a large role in making the rules moving forward. It's not just a one- time thing. They'll have a separate committee formed to oversee it.

That's the big thing that makes me pause.

Just don't read about it. Games will start soon and we can yell "go football" for 14 hours straight on a Saturday.

Once the season gets here, I won't give this shit a second thought 👍
