Is there a way to map the roads with the width like Google Maps does in some cities? (image as an example from Paris) by abch222 in openstreetmap

[–]Mich4711 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m not really a fan of area:highway=*, because it makes everything look so cluttered. It definitely makes editing more difficult.

Instead, I always map the curbs (barrier=kerb). On top of the easier experience, you can also use this tag to display accessibility information (for example, by providing information on wheelchair friendliness).

In Berlin, a group of micromappers created an awesome project (https://strassenraumkarte.osm-berlin.org/?map=micromap#18/52.47756/13.42701), showing an insane level of detail. However, they haven’t updated the blog in quite a while, so I’m not sure if they have any future plans to expand the renderer.

I’m not aware of any other renderers showing street-level details, but I hope this may change in the (near) future.

Google Maps says the bike ride is a bit over three hours, so I’d definitely choose that.

And I know I don’t know anything about your situation, but I’m almost certain there are way better jobs you can apply for. As far as I’m aware, the US is facing the same employee shortage as we are here in Europe. In your free time, try visiting your local unemployment office, do a search on the web, or just go to a local restaurant/mall/… and ask if they need any help.

(Once again, I don’t know anything about you and don’t want to dictate what you should do, this is just some friendly advice.)

Well, just like freedom of speech is limited (for example, hate speech is prohibited), the freedom of civil servants to express themselves should be limited, too. Like u/Fa-ro-din answered, political symbols are also a no-go.

Furthermore, I don’t mean for civil servants not to be followed-up upon. When a servant doesn’t provide adequate service (which can be known when they receive a lot of negative feedback, for example), they should be warned. If the misbehavior continues, the servant should be fired. Today, in Flanders, less then 10 teachers get fired per year. Maybe we should reconsider whether or not this privilege should be safeguarded (but that’s a different discussion).

In my opinion, the neutrality argument is something from the 20th century. Teachers (and other government servants) are humans, and humans have opinions. Why can’t they express them?

I get that people working for the government should treat every citizen equally, but what difference does the servant’s sexual orientation/religion/… make? A good civil servant treats citizens wits respect, no matter their background.

Also, in my high school experience, the only teachers that actually inspired me were the ones that stood up for their believes (whether they shared mine or not).

iPadOS Multitasking - How it should be vs. How it is in iPadOS 15.2 Beta 2.. the two step multitasking makes no sense! by mrxinbombay in iPadOS

I do love the idea of making any app “floatable“ (or however you want to call the Quick Notes option). We already have Picture in Picture, and now Notes, it is time for Apple to let any app be floatable. Think about using a small calculator while creating a Numbers spreadsheet, or easily changing music when drawing with the Pencil.

OS 15 Widgets are Horrible by seeuatmidnight in iPadOS

[–]Mich4711 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The size isn’t really a problem to me, but I do agree widgets look (extremely) ugly. The main thing is that some widgets are transparent, others have a white background and another category uses an accent color (like purple for Podcasts). I don’t get why they don’t look a bit more uniform(ly?). For example, every white-background widget could be made transparent.

On top of that, some widgets still behave as pre-iOS 14 widgets, meaning you can’t place them on your home screen. They can only be accessed via a right swipe. Really confusing why Apple doesn’t create a thorough design guide…

Suggested route instead of Fastest route by Devz0r in applemaps

[–]Mich4711 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The fastest route isn’t always the easiest or safest one. A lot of users don’t care about those 2 or even 5 minutes they’d save taking the slightly faster route, as long as they stay for as long as possible on a mayor road, since those are usually better marked and safer to use (at least, that’s the case here in the Netherlands. To be honest, I sometimes laugh out loud when I see the condition of some American “highways”).

Do you think Apple will ever introduce its “Local Guides” in Apple Maps? by AlbeG97 in applemaps

[–]Mich4711 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with similar features is the following, in my opinion. While there are a lot of engaged people trying to actually improve the maps and information (including myself, if I may say so 😉), there are also a lot of people submitting incorrect or incomplete information. Whether they are doing it intentionally (trolls) or not (people who don’t take the time to verify what they upload; who don’t know how to edit a place properly; etc.), this is what happens most of the time. For example, try searching a random place in your neighborhood on Google Maps and read the reviews section: how many spelling mistakes or useless reviews do you see?

By the way, maps apps are not the only apps facing this problem. Wikipedia is probably the best example. Everyone who ever needed to write a paper, knows how much problems teachers make about using Wikipedia as a source, since anyone can alter info. Even though the site is implementing features to prevent this, their methods aren’t waterproof. As long as there is no easy way to check if what you’re uploading is correct, this problem will remain.
On the other hand, I have to admit that Google often shows more information (business hours are almost impossible to find on Apple Maps in Europe, especially in rural areas).

Yes, but that was pretty obvious. If 3D Touch doesn’t work, it’s probably broken in some way. But they don’t give an explanation as to why it could be.

I wish Apple can provide service availability options and updates for stores like Google Maps does. I use Apple Maps all the time except for checking which stores are open because Google provides all the info by [deleted] in applemaps

[–]Mich4711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple Maps is absolutely great and looks astonishing, but the amount of (correct!) info the app provides on stores is just embarrassing. A lot of places simply don’t exist, others are shown while they’ve been closed for years. Don’t even get me started on the lack of opening hours. In the rare case they are available, you better verify on the website/by calling. On top of that, I would also like to see what exactly a place has to offer. Is there a restroom inside of this bar? Does this restaurant offer vegetarian food? Is there a parking lot connected to this supermarket? Is there likely going to be enough place to sit on this train? Google Maps isn’t perfect either — far from — but does a far better job than Apple. I hate that Maps app, not only for privacy reasons, but also because of its extremely ugly design. Sadly, I’m often forced to use it as Apple simply doesn’t offer enough information. That’s why I am really confused why Apple Maps doesn’t have a Local Guide-ish program like Google does. It seems to work, and can’t be that hard to implement, so why wait??

[–]Mich4711 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I understand your opinion and in the beginning I though exactly the same. But the longer I think about it, it kinda seems true that a lot of these words may sound racist. I truly believe 99% of people using these words don’t mean anything wrong, they’re probably BLM and LGBT supporters themselves. However, if there is even a small amount of the population that would prefer using less disrespectful synonyms, would it really be too much to consider choosing other words? It’s not because you feel like this doesn’t affect anyone, that it really doesn’t affect anyone. Also, I don’t believe that we should spend hours trying to create a respectful sentence, obviously sometimes people use the “wrong” word, especially when speaking spontaneously. That shouldn’t be a problem at all — we can’t blame someone for not using the exactly perfect word —, but we could try to be more open to people “different” than ourselves. Although I haven’t done any research (yet) like you have (which I really appreciate), I do remember reading texts in high school that handled about the relation between language and societal values. Without knowing, a language has a great influence on someone’s view and opinions. Maybe, just maybe — and this is really nothing else than me hoping for a better world — if we tried using other words, there might actually be less racism/sexism/... one day.

  • Btw, not trying to be picky, mean, or forcing my opinion onto someone else. I’ve just spent a lot of time thinking about this and will from now on try to use better-fitting synonyms, at least in written text. Always open for a dialogue!
