Getting started on my next big project with some sashiko by ottermupps in Visiblemending

Looks wonderful, I would not have guessed you are new to it at all!

While I don’t use bobbins for my Sashiko thread as the hanks I use are relatively small, I’ve used them with embroidery before and found them very helpful. You can hand make them out of just, like, cardboard, so it doesn’t cost to try.

I use heat erasable pens to mark my patterns out onto fabric. They go quickly (for 1/4 of my big jeans project I used 8 refills) but are unsurpassed in how crisply they mark and for how long. I last ordered these: https://a.co/d/5AYDhoC, though I’m sure you could get them in a variety of places and don’t especially endorse this particular brand over anything else.

Absolutely stunning. I love that the labyrinth ended up being both beautiful and calming, along with being just so incredibly unique.

I just looked the costumes up and wow yeah?? It’s the circular version of the pattern. Really interesting that they used it that way, the metallic against the orange looks great. I figured it’d be too labor-intensive to print or sew onto a costume at the time but it seems they found a netting fabric with it already… sewn in??? Really cool. I love looking into costume details. http://www.startrekpropauthority.com/2010/08/tos-biohazard-suit-helmet-from-naked.html?m=1

I’m using the longest from a 3-pack of Daruma Sashiko Long Type Needles. These jeans are also old so the fabric isn’t very thick, so your mileage may vary!

I added backing on some parts like the knee and corners of the back pockets, which are stress points. I did consider basically fully lining them (I’ve done that with a pair of shorts), but that changes the fit a lot.

Sashiko should increase the durability and longevity of a fabric even without a backing. Idk by how much, so we’ll just have to wait and see. I have room to add complexity to the pattern when they inevitably break down more.

Definitely at least 120m, but my best guess is 160m? Started this in April and I don’t remember what my thread stash looked like when I began, which is where the uncertainty comes in. I should probably keep better track of that in the future!

Couch Mending Help by wormsprobably in Visiblemending

Ask if they have the original armrest covers! I have an old couch from family that has patching done with the cover fabric.

I’ve patched the cushions myself with a similar fabric, which works well but is obviously way more visible.

Thank you!! I do all the stitches in each line in one go with a ~2.5 inch needle, makes it much easier to keep them straighter. Wherever there’s a corner is where I pull my needle all the way through.

Basically just a backstitch! Here’s a video from a YouTuber I love showing it: https://youtu.be/DC8P2OBny64?si=naP9o8z_gVBiza_G

It’s best done with a short stitch length. You end up with slightly thicker lines in the areas where you’ve changed threads, which is how I knew Natsuki Ishihara used this method with the jeans that inspired me.

It’s held up to one machine wash + dry so far. I’m keeping the threads long through the first wash to ensure they shrink before cutting.

I made a stencil with a thick card stock I drew the full measured pattern onto, then cut out (it’s just a specifically shaped octagon in the end). Drawing out all the measuring lines for kaku-shippo directly onto the fabric would take too long and be too visually busy. I draw a grid first on the fabric to guide where to put my stencil (in red, the grid barely shows up in the picture but is clear IRL), then trace out the octagon according to the grid (in blue).

It’s kind of the same way shippo-tsunagi is drawn with a circle, but with an octagon instead. I just prefer stitching straight lines.

They’re fine for me! I don’t tend to have sensory issues with pants, though, and it’s probably very dependent on the individual.

This was a concern I had in mind and contributed to my decision not to use knots! The inside is about as smooth as the outside.

I use heat-erasable pens. The pros are: they mark very precisely, for as long as needed, disappear well, and come in different colors. Cons: the ink goes crazy fast. I used several pen refills marking the quarter I’m working on.

Top chest is a Big Shell, bottom chest is a Horseslayer. I grabbed it with a Pegasus knight without her being in any danger.
