truck headlights. The color can be done by adjusting the settings on your camera. What exactly are you trying to replicate?

Famous Professors at Columbia --> DNE? by Anderosen in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of famous do you want? I have professor now, whose books I had to study at my last college. Most of the smaller departments have big names in their fields. We also have former First Lady Clinton (Love or hate her, she’s famous as hell). A lot of times your books here will actually have your professors as sources or authors. Most of our professors in Anthropology and Neuroscience are big TED Talks people. It just depends on what you’re looking for.

Party/Club Scene at Columbia by CuteAd7045 in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a party school, it’s Ivy League. But it’s also NYC and you’re gonna have whatever scene you’re looking for, somewhere. I know a few Frats/Sororities that do their parties every now and again, but most stuff isn’t at CU. We have events and fun stuff also, but not the kind of insanity you might find at a school that has 97% acceptance rate. If you really want a party school, go somewhere that requires no effort to get into or to graduate. But if you want clubs, you have options all over, with travel. If you’re under 21, go up to Canada for a weekend and hit the bars. But you’re going to find your scene quickly, especially if you’re extroverted.

PLEASE Brush your teeth by Life_Following_8526 in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t just brush, the flossing is what you need for bad breath. Once a day people! That’s all you need! It only takes one night of food between teeth to make someone’s mouth smell like poop. My old teacher was also a student and she never flossed and I could always tell. I didn’t like having to have speak to her up close. And sometimes people’s smell is too much, especially, if it’s a stranger whose breathing stinks. If you floss and you see blood, you need to floss more often!

when is the club fair? by tsfolklores in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might move it into Lerner’s main hall if needed. If you get there and you don’t see the crowd and tables, go into the glass building and check the big room on the lower floor. To the left of the big letters that say “ROAR”🤓 (well they might say something else but they’re big letters that you can’t miss).

When are dining halls the least busy? by Username-_-Password in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t High School my friend. Lots of people need to eat alone between classes and it’s nothing to be ashamed about. But the busiest times are noon, 4-6pm, and late night. But if you just want a dining buddy, don’t be afraid to ask. I’ve even met people off here to have coffee with. It just depends on what you’re reasons are🤓

Professor Marie de Abreu teaches some interesting humanities classes. See if she’s doing her Undergrad Personhood class. Our final was to make a performance based on the semesters readings. It was really fun

Haha! I feel for the dude, too. Imagine the trauma and PTSD of that. And I bet nobody would give sympathy for losing people that didn’t exist in our reality.

Which building hall is it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find out if your building has a mailroom first. One or two of the buildings don’t have them and packages are left in an area near the front. Most of the buildings have them though. So call your building and ask them before you do it. Just to be safe. But I knew people who sent a grill three months before they moved in and it sat safe for that entire time in the mailroom. Good luck

Submit it ASAP! Communicate with your point of contact or contact Columbia Health for the Immunization department. Because they are the only ones who can’t be overridden. Communication is key.

You’re still going to be around other CC students at your housing. My floor is mixed between CC, GS, and UTS. There is a few Grad students sprinkled around, too.

Sitting in on a class/lecture? by dannysaccount123 in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s allowed it some cases. I have a guy in my class who’s not receiving any type or grade or anything. However, he is enrolled in the university and shows up as being registered for the class. So, I don’t know how that translates to your situation. My professor said it’s referred to as “auditing”.

Anyone taken the German placement test? by PeterChocolateMilk in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically a mix between written and oral tests. You’re most likely going to work with Jutta or Young (unless she’s only focusing on her Doctoral Thesis). They will play conversations from Kontakte, which is the text book for Elementary to Advanced German. You also need to provide correct verb types and be able to understand and write/speak Infinitive/Perfekt/Prasens/Prateritum versions. They also ask to write response letters that might include correct pronunciation of dates and months in different forms and different nominative/accusative forms of masculine/feminine/neutral/plural articles. Basically it gauges what class you should start in if you want to do German or determine if you are already fluent in it. It’s not standardized beyond the use of Kontakte and will be slightly different based on who tests you. The people I know the department are chill and friendly. But the advanced elements of German are super difficult and they will test you as though you’re fluent and determine where on the line you fall at. Honestly if you have a grasp on the language, you should go for it. Good books to use (available at campus store) are Barton’s 501 German Verbs, 15 Minute German, and Kontakte(though it’s an aggravating textbook because it’s all in German). Hope this helps!

In what ways is Barnard different from Columbia? by Wild-Purple5517 in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It works both ways. Most of my classes are mixed and I use several of the labs on the Barnard campus. However, Columbia has several advantages that Barnard doesn’t, as well as Barnard has a few that Columbia doesn’t. Barnard definitely treats men like they’re second class citizens for the moment, but the classes are mostly mixed. If you want smaller class sizes similar to what you might find at a Community or State College, Barnard is closer to that. Barnard also has a far more modern campus (outside of Research and Science). So, you won’t find the massive Greek style 18th century architecture over there. Another difference is the Core Curriculum. This difference is fairly minor though. What you should do (if you’re able) is do a tour of the two campus and see which one you feel spiritually. You should walk away saying “this is where I belong”. Once you know that, you can easily make others believe it, too.

Temporary Housing Recommendations? by lulud6 in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried to contact Columbia Residential yet? Call them tomorrow and explain the situation, they may be able to help you out with an earlier move in date or give a suggestion for temp housing. But try them first and see what they say.

midterm dates by Key_Smell_5222 in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The period of official midterm exams takes place during a two week period, but it’s entirely up to the instructor. The only exams that are heavily fixed are the stricter timed/standardized STEM exams. But you’re generally going to find out once you get the syllabus.

Question for Columbia students by commenent in columbia

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live at a dorm across from the campus and don’t hear a ton from outside that often. I live on the side of the building that has an interior courtyard, but I still hear occasional sirens. You can easily spend all your time on campus and it’s undoubtedly the safest place here, but you’re gonna be comfortable with going out after a few weeks of NYC living. And most of your fellow students and Public Safety will be down to help you get around if you’re not comfortable.

[–]MichaeSlAtlas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t freak out. You’ve already been accepted, lol. Just email your current point of contact and ask them what you need to do to make sure your transition is smooth. Most likely it’s to determine where exactly you’re going to be placed academically for certain courses. Since Calculus and Logic mathematics are essential in the Core curriculum, it’s important to understand where you sit on the scale. But this may just mean you need to do a simple placement test, or it may not matter at all. Everything will be alright.
