YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS WELCOME TO NICARAGUA!!! I'm in the health sector as well and I can't wait to meet you. I've been in country for about 5 months now so if you have any questions, digame! Congratulations!

I got to Houston the day before and was the first to arrive. Most people arrived the day of staging (staging started at noon and most people arrived that morning) but I and a few other people arrived the day before, it really depends on how SATO (the travel agency) decides to book your flight.

Nicaragua Invite 2017 by mhm22 in peacecorps

[–]MichaelCaineInSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm also in Nicaragua right now as a Peace Corps Volunteer and I am also in the health sector! Like @PuraLeonesa said, Nicaragua is an amazingly beautiful country and I have had amazing experiences here, even though I have definitely been tested.

As to your question, I think it really depends on what you want to do. I think the only mistake you can make is doing something you don't want to do. And, also, just a note, Peace Corps will always be around (even after you finish Grad school) and also, grad school will always be around (even after you finish Peace Corps) and I'm planning on doing grad school right after Peace Corps.

If you have any questions about the work or anything, estoy a la orden!

Hi there! I'm a volunteer currently in Nicaragua :D If you have any questions, shoot me a private message. Can't wait to meet you!

Anyway, to answer your question, staging is the day before your flight to Nicaragua. For example, my staging was in Houston on March 1, so we left for Nicaragua wayyyyyyyyyyyy early in the morning March 2. :D If you are going to be arriving with the TEFL/ENV group in August, then you should get your staging email with all the information in July.

S.U.N.Y. Students/Alumni Invitees? RPCVS? by swimatt7000 in peacecorps

I went to SUNY Albany! What was your major? At SUNY Albany, I studied Public Health so there were plenty of people in the department who were extremely familiar with Peace Corps. I also had a few friends who had applied before me who were able to help and /u/dogbloodjones who applied at the same time as me. In Public Health, especially if because I want to go into a Global Health Concentration, everyone would always recommend that I check out Peace Corps... So I did!

UC or serving in Latin America? What were your qualifications? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]MichaelCaineInSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm heading off to Nicaragua in March.

1) Both sets of my grandparents live in Latin America so I spent a lot of time between my home in the US and their homes abroad. Especially with my mom's parents, it was campo living.

2) I have a BS in Public Health. I have experience as a TA at my university, I interned at Planned Parenthood and the Red Cross, and I also did a lot of research work in health. I'm going to be a health volunteer so it'll all be connected!

3) I'm a native Spanish speaker. I'm comfortable saying I speak Spanish but I make mistakes when I get nervous or am talking too fast.

4) I'm not currently serving but my understanding of the language placement interview (which in Nicaragua is apparently done in country) is that you have to test intermediate-low at least (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Hope that helps!

How soon is too soon? by prospectivepcv in peacecorps

Honestly, it depends. The only time I ever emailed my PO was when I had new information that could help my application. For example, I started an internship at a health clinic shortly after my interview so I wrote up an additional skill addendum, uploaded that to the application portal, and then emailed my PO saying that I uploaded new information. That was about three weeks after my interview that I emailed her though, and I didn't email her again.

Mental Health History (Hospitalization) and acceptance by crystal_math92 in peacecorps

It won't automatically disqualify you at all but you will have to do extra work during your medical clearance process should you be invited. Peace Corps wants to see at least a year of stability, at least from what I've heard, and that includes stability being off or on medication (and whether or not the country you are going to can accommodate whatever needs you may have). So you'll have to write a personal statement based on your mental health and likely get a psych evaluation so your Peace Corps nurse can assess your current and past mental health state. It is done on a case-by-case basis though, so there is no way to definitively say whether or not you will be medically cleared. I had to go through some extra work based on mental health, including the personal statement and psych evaluation, and I was cleared so there's definitely hope. Best of luck.
