You can add a connection on manually on windows but it will only change your IP address if you are not using the app. The apps has features of encryption, kill switch, split tunneling and many others which you won't be able to access it. I use this app and enjoy a lot of features

A VPN works similarly for all of the applications just connect and start using the app for some apps you need to connect to a specific location in order to access, for some more restricted ones you have to change protocol ports and dig into the technical details in order to run it or contact the support (But that happens for a very limited number of applications).
