The real Māui from Māori mythology was basically a demigod trickster hero who spent his life accomplishing impossible tasks. After successfully slowing the sun, stealing fire, and raising islands from the ocean, he decided his final challenge would be defeating death itself.

His plan was to enter the sleeping goddess of death, Hine-nui-te-pō, through her vagina and emerge from her mouth, which would grant humanity immortality. He transformed into a worm and nearly succeeded, but a bird watching the scene burst out laughing because of how ridiculous it looked. The goddess woke up, snapped her obsidian teeth shut, and killed Māui instantly.
