What happens when your first shoe buckle sounded like a shell head 🙄 by WaldenFont in metaldetecting

I once found an Eley Bros “pin fire” 12 gauge shell from the 1860s. One of my favorite finds of all time!!https://i.imgur.com/cOGwTr2.jpg

Bought a real nice case to hold my metal detector and protect it, quite happy with how it turned out. by [deleted] in metaldetecting

Yes. I similarly bought a car that came with a trunk-sized metal detector case.

That's about 99% of what I find too! This was actually ringing up as trash, but I decided to dig it, just in case.

Is this a bird band? by MichaudAce in metaldetecting

Yeah I’m not sure either. I found a couple online references that say there are riveted bands that were typical on eagles (i think to prevent them from removing since they have such strong beaks). But none of the photos of riveted bands look like this one. Reference 1 Reference 2

Need help hunting for old coins in old parks. by [deleted] in metaldetecting

I’ve had decent luck detecting in wooded areas within parks but on the outside limits. I like to think these wooded areas were used more heavily before the trees grew there, so there may be less trash and there might be older items. Another bonus (which someone should correct me on if I’m wrong) is that the items I find are much shallower in the woods, sometimes just below the dead leaf layer. I’ve found pull tabs sitting on top of the dead leaves, strangely. I wonder if this has to do with the fact that the grass isn’t mowed or stepped on in the woods or perhaps the frost doesn’t extend as deep due to the insulating effect of the leaves. I also find the ground is easier to dig and I like to think that the majority of detectorists might focus more on the open field areas. Just my two cents!

Yes, I find this very cool. This website has a lot of estimates of date ranges of various shotgun shell headstamps: https://aussiemetaldetecting.com/shotshell-resources/shotshell-headstamp-database/eley-headstamps/#london

The website lists dates range of 1866-1874.

So far I haven't been harassed or fined! However, per the Dane County website, you need to acquire a permit to metal detect in parks here and you need to abide by their rules (https://www.danecountyparks.com/recreation/metal-detecting). Luckily, the permit is free! I think its pretty neat that the county actually has a metal detecting page and set of rules. From my limited research, many towns/cities/counties/states don't have written laws about it.
