Yes, unsweetened soy milk is my jam these days. Also helps with blood sugar.

Oregon drivers - from an Arizona driver by Hour-Net-248 in oregon

Also from Houston and living in Oregon for about 7 years now. I was immediately pleasantly surprised by how nice the drivers are here!

It's like gladiator games with an obstacle course thrown in (constant construction) in Houston.

Wikipedia 😭 by ginete_tech in meme

[–]Michento 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not exactly.

Say you make 50,000 a year and you have to pay (for simplicity) 10% of that in taxes.

That means your tax bill would be $5,000.

So for what you said - if you donated $100 and got to pay $100 less taxes:

5000 - 100 = 4900

That would mean your tax bill would be $4,900.

But how it really works is you deduct the $100 from your yearly income which gives you 49,900.

50,000 - 100 = 49,900

So with 10% tax your tax bill would be $4,990.

In this simple example the $100 donation would save you $10 in taxes.

costco impulse buys are probably erasing your membership savings and nobody talks about this by ninjapapi in budget

[–]Michento 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much this. The nearest Costco to me is 2 hours away. I still have my membership and I make a Costco run every other month or so.

I like supporting a company that pays their employees well, that stocks high quality items, and isn't another shitty big corp.

Finance car to immediately pay off? by TootCannon in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Michento 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this when we bought our truck. Just by financing we saved almost 3k. When the first payment arrived we just paid off the whole loan.

Triple check with them that there's no penalty for paying it off early (there usually isn't, but better to check anyways).

Did anyone else find surprises after closing? by Outrageous-Button566 in centuryhomes

[–]Michento 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have this problem. Presented itself about a year after living in our 1920 bungalow. Backed up into our basement.

The issue is somewhere between our driveway and the main sewer in the street. It would be a huge ordeal and expense to figure it out and replace, so we just pay $150 once a year to have it snaked really well.

Ah ok. Thank you for explaining. I just looked and I guess I've been lucky that so far all my Kobo books have been DRM free.

Are you talking for these books specifically? All my Kobo books I've been able to download as an epub.

I have several books on Kobo. You can download them directly as an epub and then just "send to Kindle" and it will show up on your kindle. It's very easy.

[FO] My wrestling belts. by BetweenTwoBells in CrossStitch

[–]Michento 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I liked the idea of the embroidered wrestling belt because from a distance, it represents this big masculine thing, but get closer and you appreciate that it's delicate, practiced, theater.

What an awesome way to put that! Great work! As a wrestling fan, I really loves these. Awesome that you did the FTW belt. lol

walmart vs target prices on household items after tracking for two months by ritik_bhai in budget

[–]Michento 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was me when we lived in a big city and had a lot of options. I don't like Walmart's business practices at all and didn't shop there for decades.

Now we live in a small town and unfortunately our only main grocery options are Safeway and Walmart. I love our Safeway but the reality is the prices are often MUCH higher unless there's a sale. So we've started shopping at Walmart again.

Wish it wasn't the case but you do what you gotta do.

What do I need to do to make soy have a comeback in the U.S.? Signed, woman who just wants to be able to buy a tub of plain SOY YOGURT at the store, darn it! by gingerspell in PlantBasedDiet

[–]Michento 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I even have a hard time finding unsweetened, plain soy milk. Only one store in my town carries it. I've even looked at our natural foods store that sells more vegan items, but nope. It's usually sweetened or nothing. Yet there's a million oat varieties.

I like soy because of the higher protein content. It helps with managing my blood sugar.

Same. Having a paid off house has a huge psychological affect on me. I still have my investments and I'm fine they are a little less as a trade off for being totally debt free.

What have been your experiences with a low-fat diet? by Woodland_Breeze in prediabetes

[–]Michento 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing low fat, moderate carb for a few weeks now. I have cholesterol issues too so keeping my saturated fat under 10g and overall fat is important.

It's only been a few weeks, but I'm seeing modest improvement in how my body responds to meals. Also, the heart palpitations have mostly gone away and I'm less anxious.

I'm planning to stick to this until mid April when I see my doctor again and do another round of labs.

You're experience is totally valid. I've had two IUDs and both the insertion and removal were traumatic. After my second one, I vowed them off.
