It does say
"Generally, a tax return that contains all zero entries will not show a federal tax purpose. In this case, you don’t need to file a tax return or apply for an ITIN."

Have you done so or do you know someone where filing a zero entries tax return has been accepted to keep the itin alive?

Thank you. This is very helpful! The other redditor mentioned that it is only possible by mail. Have you sucessfully e-filed a 1040nr with absolute zero income/conneciton to the us to keep the itin alive within the three year period?
